Since the deep convection and organization had diminished somewhat by 1500 UTC, the initial advisory MSW was estimated at 35 kts. Note #2: The CP of 991 mb was based on a 12/2300 UTC pressure report of 995.9 mb from Buoy 41927 which was located 30 nm northeast of the center. ************************************************************************* Storm Name: None Cyclone Number: 10 Basin: ATL Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 05 AUG 13 1800 14.0 N 44.6 W 1008 30 05 AUG 14 0000 14.7 N 45.3 W 1008 30 05 AUG 14 0600 13.6 N 45.9 W 1009 25 05 AUG 14 1200 13.6 N 46.4 W 1010 25 ************************************************************************* Storm Name: JOSE Cyclone Number: 11 Basin: ATL Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 05 AUG 22 1200 19.4 N 94.5 W 1008 25 05 AUG 22 1800 19.5 N 95.1 W 1008 25 05 AUG 23 0000 19.7 N 95.7 W 1002 45 Upgraded at 2125 UTC 05 AUG 23 0600 19.7 N 96.7 W 1001 45 05 AUG 23 1200 19.7 N 97.7 W 1005 30 Inland in Mexico 05 AUG 23 1500 19.7 N 98.1 W 1007 25 Final advisory ************************************************************************* Storm Name: KATRINA Cyclone Number: 12 Basin: ATL Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 05 AUG 23 1800 23.0 N 75.2 W 1007 30 05 AUG 24 0000 23.3 N 75.7 W 1007 30 05 AUG 24 0600 23.8 N 76.1 W 1007 30 05 AUG 24 1200 24.4 N 76.5 W 1006 35 05 AUG 24 1800 25.3 N 77.0 W 1003 40 05 AUG 25 0000 26.0 N 77.6 W 1001 40 05 AUG 25 0600 26.1 N 78.4 W 1000 45 05 AUG 25 1200 26.2 N 79.0 W 999 45 05 AUG 25 1800 26.2 N 79.6 W 990 60 Hurricane at 1935Z 05 AUG 26 0000 25.9 N 80.3 W 984 70 05 AUG 26 0600 25.4 N 81.3 W 990 60 05 AUG 26 1200 25.2 N 81.9 W 987 65 05 AUG 26 1800 24.9 N 82.6 W 969 85 05 AUG 27 0000 24.7 N 83.3 W 965 85 05 AUG 27 0600 24.4 N 84.0 W 963 95 05 AUG 27 1200 24.4 N 84.6 W 940 100 05 AUG 27 1800 24.5 N 85.3 W 949 100 05 AUG 28 0000 24.9 N 85.9 W 944 100 05 AUG 28 0600 25.2 N 86.8 W 935 125 05 AUG 28 1200 25.7 N 87.7 W 908 140 05 AUG 28 1800 26.4 N 88.7 W 906 150 See Note #1 05 AUG 29 0000 27.2 N 89.1 W 904 140 CP 902 mb at 2100Z 05 AUG 29 0600 28.1 N 89.6 W 909 135 05 AUG 29 1200 29.5 N 89.6 W 921 120 Making landfall SE LA 05 AUG 29 1800 31.1 N 89.6 W 948 85 Inland in MS 05 AUG 30 0000 32.8 N 88.8 W 965 55 05 AUG 30 0600 34.1 N 88.6 W 981 45 05 AUG 30 1200 35.6 N 88.0 W 983 35 05 AUG 30 1500 36.3 N 87.5 W 985 30 Final NHC advisory 05 AUG 30 2100 38.0 N 86.0 W 991 25 Initial HPC advisory 05 AUG 31 0300 39.4 N 84.0 W 994 25 05 AUG 31 0900 41.1 N 81.6 W 996 17 05 AUG 31 1500 42.0 N 78.3 W 997 17 05 AUG 31 2100 42.2 N 75.4 W 997 17 See Note #2 Note #1: The CP of Katrina continued to fall after the peak MSW of 150 kts was reported, but the MSW was adjusted downward slightly to 145 kts in the 28/2100 UTC advisory. This was based upon findings from the Stepped-Frequency Microwave Radiometer on board a NOAA research aircraft which suggested that the peak 700-mb FLW to surface MSW ratio was not as large as the typical 90% used for most hurricanes. So it seems likely that the peak MSW for Katrina may be set at 145 kts instead of 150 kts. Note #2: The actual final HPC advisory on Katrina's remnants was at 0300 UTC on 1 September, but no coordinates were given as the remnant surface low-pressure center had been absorbed by a nearby extratropical LOW. ************************************************************************* Storm Name: LEE Cyclone Number: 13 Basin: ATL Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 05 AUG 28 1800 14.8 N 46.3 W 1007 25 05 AUG 29 0000 15.5 N 46.9 W 1007 25 05 AUG 29 0600 16.5 N 48.9 W 1007 25 05 AUG 29 1200 18.0 N 50.0 W 1008 25 Final advisory 05 AUG 31 1200 28.4 N 50.8 W 1009 30 Regenerated 05 AUG 31 1800 29.9 N 49.9 W 1007 35 05 SEP 01 0000 30.8 N 49.3 W 1009 30 05 SEP 01 0600 31.9 N 51.2 W 1010 30 05 SEP 01 1200 31.8 N 51.4 W 1010 30 05 SEP 01 1800 32.2 N 51.4 W 1010 30 05 SEP 02 0000 32.4 N 52.0 W 1010 25 Final NHC advisory Note: The remnant circulation of Lee continued to hang around in the North Atlantic until it merged with a frontal zone several hundred miles south-southeast of Newfoundland on 4 September. ************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* NORTHEAST PACIFIC (NEP) - North Pacific Ocean East of Longitude 180 Sources of Information ---------------------- The track coordinates, central pressure and 1-minute average maximum sustained wind values were obtained from the operational forecast/advisories issued by the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, for locations east of longitude 140W, and from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, for locations west of longitude 140W. North Pacific Ocean West of Longitude 180 Sources of Information ---------------------- The track coordinates and 1-minute average maximum sustained wind values in general were taken from operational warnings issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) of the U. S. Air Force and Navy, located at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The central pressure and 10-minute average maximum sustained wind estimates for most systems were obtained from warnings issued by the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA), which is the World Meteorological Organization's Regional Specialised Meteor- ological Centre for the basin. In a few instances, information from warnings issued by other Asian warning centers may have been utilized. The center position coordinates from JMA and other centers were com- pared with those from JTWC and annotations made in the Remarks column when the differences in general amounted to 40-50 nm or more. Michael V. Padua of Naga City in the Philippines, owner of the Typhoon 2000 website, sends me cyclone tracks based upon warnings issued by the Japanese Meteorological Agency and the Philippines' Atmospheric, Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). Also, Huang Chunliang of Fuzhou City, China, sends me each month a table comparing the maximum intensities assigned to each cyclone from all the applicable warning centers in the Northwest Pacific basin. A very special thanks to Michael and Chunliang for the assistance they so reliably provide. Regarding the MSW comparison tables, Huang Chunliang has often stated: "In the title line the storm grade has been adopted based on the classification of the most 'radical' TCWC. Also, all the storm names/numbers available to me have been referenced. In addition, the starting date points to the one when the system was initially upgraded to TD status by whatever TCWC, while the ending date represents the one when the storm was last ranked as a TD by whatever TCWC." IMPORTANT NOTE - PLEASE READ !!!!!! To repeat the caveat which is included in the Author's Note at the end of the cyclone summaries--the tropical cyclone tracks I prepare are based upon the operational warnings/advisories/ advices/bulletins which are issued by the various tropical cyclone warning agencies around the world. Users of these tracks should be aware that they are preliminary and subject to revision during post-seasonal analyses of the cyclones by the forecasters and analysts at the several warning centers. For the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific basins, official tropical cyclone reports and "best tracks" can be found at the website of the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov> The Joint Typhoon Warning Center's website contains links to their Annual Tropical Cyclone Reports which include that agency's "best tracks" for tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific basin, the North Indian Ocean, and the Southern Hemisphere: http://199.10.200.33/jtwc.html> SPECIAL NOTE: Back issues of the global tropical cyclone summaries and monthly cyclone track files can be obtained at the following websites: ftp://ftp.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/pub/landsea/padgett/> http://australiasevereweather.com/cyclones/> http://www.typhoon2000.ph> http://mpittweather.com> http://www.tropicalcyclone2005.com/> PREPARED BY: Gary Padgett [email protected] SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS BY: Michael V.
