Tornadoes confirmed in IL and WI!

Severe storms erupted over southern Wisconsin, western Illinois and  continue to increase in coverage over points south this afternoon as a dynamic  storm system featuring high wind shear and very low instability has made its way  into the upper midwest. RUC analysis shows a seasonably rich moisture plume  being transported as far north as extreme southern Wisconsin, where dew points  reached the upper 50s and low 60s today. CAPE in the 1000-1500 J/kg range was  present over this same area, which allowed for robust convection and ultimately  provided enough fuel for scattered supercells to persist across western Illinois  before the storm mode ultimately turned linear. Several of the earlier cells had  very strong rotation, and one storm in north-central Illinois became tornadic at  around 3:00 this afternoon. Based on storm spotter and law enforcement info, it  appears that a rather significant tornado struck the Caledonia, IL area, with  reports of a 1/2 mile wide damage path and heavy structural damage. This storm  continued into southern Wisconsin and evidently continued producing one or more  damaging tornadoes. Tornado watches continue for parts of WI, IL and southwest  into MO. We'll update with more information as it becomes available!
