Dec 1 - Queensland's wettest spring on record
« on: 02 December 2010, 03:32:45 PM »
From the Courier Mail tonight

QUEENSLAND has experienced the wettest spring in more than a century, the weather bureau says.

The state recorded nearly three times the average spring rainfall since 1900 with 248.2mm, the bureau's latest data shows.

Bellenden Ker Top Station, near Cairns, was the wettest with 3309.6mm, beating its previous record of 1209.4mm in 1989.

Babinda's post office, south of Cairns, had the second highest rainfall for the season with 1738.8mm.

Weatherzone meteorologist Martin Palmer said the record rain was the result of Australia's La Nina weather pattern.

"The last three months we have had a developing La Nina pattern where there is fairly cold water over towards South America and fairly warm water towards Australia," he said.

"We have a huge flow of moisture moving towards Queensland which affects northeastern Queensland the most out of the entire country.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we did see further record falls."

Queensland's Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Jeff Sabburg said it was also a wet November with most parts of the state recording higher than the average November rainfall.

"It's the wettest spring on record," Mr Sabburg said.

"We also had the highest November average rainfall since 2000."

Barcaldine, Isisford, Blackall and Longreach all set November records, with 285mm for Barcaldine in November.

Widespread showers of up to 50mm have marked the first day of December in southeast Queensland.

More than 600 homes in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Brisbane's bayside and Caboolture area are without power due to downed powerlines and car crashes.

An Energex spokesman said in separate crashes four cars have hit power poles and roadside power boxes causing outages.
