Topic: Kyogle hailstorm 26/10/2003 - very large hailstones!

Hi,

I came across this website which seems realtively new or I have never come across it either.

Check out the size of these hailstones:

They are in the 3 inch range.

Anyone want to take a guess what storms could have contributed to produce these assuming they fell in the vicinity of Kyogle.

There have been quite a few over the years in that general area, though I cant tell how old the pic is. There was the Xmas day storm a few years back, which you chased Jimmy, which did track into Se-QLD and was very intense...but 3-inch hail from that one???  Can't recall any others that would have affected town.

There was the supercell that went through in 17th January 2001 after the Casino hammering (I do recall new rooves) but I think there have been a few since. Michael?

"between 1:30 and 2pm 26/10/2003 the storm cut a narrow west/east swathe through here destroying roofs on 3 or 4 houses. The noise was horrendous and the thoroughbred Arab gelding just about went mad. I saw a hunk of hail explode on his forehead and stop him in his tracks."



"The vegemite jar and contents were about the same weight as the "rocks". The incredible noise included the "crumping" sound of the big ones hitting the roof - still got the dents in the satellite dish."

Isn't that fantastic - that certainly was some decent supercell given that almost pure hailstones were falling here as well as in your video Michael! I am thinking it is an LP supercell  given the shear profile on the day? You don't live that far away from this.

And those holes in the lawn! The hailstones in the storm we got further south on this day were obviously on average larger than what seems to be the case here hail in the range of 3 to 4 inches - we measured 9.6cm hail at least 45 minutes after the storm!
