This day in 1908 saw the states transfer their weather recording responsibilities to the nationally run bureau.
Bureau acting director Neville Smith says there has been amazing advances in technology over the past 100 years.
"The advent of satellites, the advent of new super computers, the changes in the science mean that we can now predict weather from out to seven to 10 days," he said.
"When the bureau was created it didn't even understand how weather could be predicted, let alone predicting in a practical sense.
"It's been an amazing change."
Mr Smith says the service has transformed into much more than just a weather forecaster.
"When it was originally established it was as much to keep a record of the climate within Australia," he said.
"So a lot of the early emphasis was on just understanding what sort of climate the early settlers and those just establishing themselves in Australia were going to have to work with and try and understand how it varied," he said.
