Newcastle Radar 8th to 9th February 2008

Interesting images on the Newcastle radar tonight (loop from 1130-2300 UT) but probably lasts longer.

basically a very narrow band of storms, not moving 28km to the NE of the radar extening to about 100km ESE. While ererything else around it is showing strong movement to the ESE. Anyone got any ideas on this one? What sort of storm from would be showing this pattern? (A bit far for me to drive up now and have a look at any lightning, though stormtracker isn't showing any).

Richary,

Michael will post an animation or two to show what is going on.

The storms are developing due to rapid destabilisation. Some pretty impressive anvils in the line of storms off the North Coast and Mid North Coast. The main upper trough is seen lagging and I think storms should occur around the Central Coast to Newcastle region during the afternoon.

The later images after I went to bed show it breaking up and moving off the SE as a more normal storm!
