Topic: Low over Southwest WA does a u-turn: April 2008

While the east is still enjoying weather associated with the upper low over NSW another event unfolded over southwest Western Australia the past few days.

A low spun up over waters south of WA before heading northwest across southwest WA. It then did a 180 and headed back southeast.  I wonder how unusual this is ?

I haven't seen it happen in WA, but it has happened a few times in VIC - also high pressure cells tend to jump over the eastern region of SE VIC from time to time, especially closer to winter.

Hello, I read a weather report on the BBC last night in which the city of Perth is within 3.6 mm of breaking its April rainfall record. The city has received some 142 mm of rain this month and much of the rainfall was caused by this weather event.

I will provide another post here at the end of the month to see whether that rainfall record is broken or not.

City of Perth breaks rainfall record for April

As per my previous post, following the recent wet outbreak and this mornings follow up showers, the city of Perth in Western Australia has set a new April rainfall record that has been held since April 1926.

The city has recorded 152.4 mm of rain this April thanks to some freak rain events occurring over SW Western Australia of recent weeks. There has been no rain since 9 am 29/4/2008 so it is likely that this figure will stand.

It is likely this this new April rainfall record will stand for some time to come.
