Tornadoes possible in the Dakotas!
A large trough is sweeping into the northern Plains this weekend and will set the stage for what will likely be a multi-day severe weather event for the Dakotas southward. Today the main threat will be centered on eastern South and North Dakota, where high instability will combine with the best wind shear to create a somewhat localized, heightened threat for tornadoes. The
NAM and RUC models indicate that discrete storms should break out mid-afternoon; EHI east of the Missouri river along the North-South Dakota border is quite high, indicating that any storms that do fire will be in an environment very favorable for strongly rotating updrafts and, consequently, tornadoes. The TVN crew, complete with the probe team from Hyperion Technology Group, drove all night from Tupelo, MS and are now in South Dakota awaiting initiation.
