Some of the worst cyclones to lash the Australian coast since 1970.CYCLONE TRACY (1974), a category four, struck Darwin in the Northern Territory on Christmas Eve. It remains Australia's most destructive with winds of around 250 kilometres per hour. Seventy-one people were killed, and many thousands injured. Of a population of 43,000, 25,000 were left homeless, according to the Australian government.
