Looks like last night's lightning has ignited another fire in the Pilliga.

Today we've had wind gusts to 70km/h. From the size of the pyrocumulus and smoke tower I'd say thousands, or tens of thousands, of hectares are gone already. Looks like Chris and I might hire a plane this arvo to go for a look, I'll post some photos later on if we get up.

So we did charter that plane and got a few photos of the new 'Goldmine Road Fire'. The winds dropped right off in the afternoon and the fire was much calmer than earlier in the day (which made for an easier plane ride too..). Unfortunately high level cloud and low level smoke didn't make it great for photos but we got a few good ones, here's a couple:





RFS said the fire had burned out 1400 Ha at 5:15pm. With any luck we'll get some good showers over the next few days.

Yesterday we went for a drive into the Pilliga and took some photos of the scenes of destruction:




The cycads were way cool. They've reshot to nearly full size just a month after the fire!

Hi David, only just had a proper look at the images from this bushfire. Certainly a large area burnt and quite obvious when viewing the MODIS images, even low resolution ones.

I found the new growth picture amongst the widespread burnt landscape quite refreshing - a sense of new life.

That period of widespread fires gave the impression that the fire services could have become overwhelmed! But alas, more are under control.
