Hi Brad,

Awesome pictures - nature's work of art! It's no wonder that the supercells in the US produce tornadoes even the South Dakota 7th June 2005 LP supercell did. They are just so long lived, often spin up on triple points or ride along boundaries.

Regards,

I'll second that! Aweosme stuff Brad. Make no mistake, while it was a year (well let's say a peak season) lacking in tornadoes, there were some violent supercells and you guys did very well given the timing. Excellent stuff!

Hi

Fabulous! The 'Texas HP beast' looks nasty but how can you tell it is HP? It looks like an intense squall line with a shelf cloud. The Colorado storm looks circular and HP and is my favourite in your collection. Are there any more photos of this storm available?

Hi Darren,
the photo of the Texas storm shows only a small portion of the beast as we were retreating!  It was May 31st 2005 near Hereford Texas.  I have heaps more footage and pics of it.  Yes it does look like an intense squall but it was definately a huge HP supercell with baseball to softball size hail.  There are more pics of this storm at Sam Barricklow's chase log:

http://www.k5kj.net/20050531.htm

Both the Texas and Colorado storms are featured here:

http://www.stormchase.net/2005531.htm

You can see more of the amazing structure of the Flagler, Colorado rings of saturn supercell (June 2nd 2005) in the photography section of www.australiasevereweather.com

Regards,
Brad.

Hi NZStorm, is this David H from NZ?

Nice pic of a nasty storm thats for sure.  Here's a great shot of the barrel updraft of the Hereford/Nazareth Tx storm at:

and also the beaver tail earlier near Dimmit Tx:

Brad, I would say your photo 0748 was taken at a similar time and of the same subject as my 'Bears Cage' photo.  I made the mistake of staying close to the meso and seeing alot of grey weather when I should have been down the road toward Dimmitt seeing the great structure you guys saw.

Hello Steven and welcome to the forum.  In a coincidence we had a New Zealander in our group on that storm, hence I wasnt sure if you were David  ;)

Credit to Jimmy Deguara for those pics by the way :)

There certainly was a lot of grey and green to be seen up close with that storm!  We allowed it to surge toward us several times as we took in the awesome outflow/gust front near Nazareth and the equally awesome beaver tail extending toward the horizon!

How much chasing did you do in the USA Steven? Were you lucky enough to encounter tornados in a lean year?

I only chased for 10 days and didn't see any tornadoes.  Did get a good look at a strongly rotating wall cloud. That was perhaps the highlight of the trip. It occured in New Mexico on the 30th at Logan, near Tucumcarri. The wall cloud was within 100ft of the ground and not far from us, following us down a road for about 15minutes.  Unforetunately my camera had run out of battery power by that stage in the day.  >:(   I got one underexposed snap shot (due to flash) before camera died. I now carry extra camera gear!!

Hi Steven,

The photographs from our component of the days activity on the 30th is here:

http://www.australiasevereweather.com/photography/photos/2005/index15.html

Now your storm was the one we were headed for but we then missed by a few of minutes the tornado near Des Moines! A hill blocked the view.

What dates were you there from Steven?

Regards,

Jimmy Deguara
