Topic: More strong winds and rain over the Southeast : 29 - 31 August 2009

Another round of severe weather warnings have started - for parts of NSW and VIC at this stage but we could see more widespread warnings soon enough. Flooding continues in many of the Tasmanian rivers and the week ahead looks very wet again. Meanwhile temps will be approaching the mid 30s over NE NSW and SE QLD tomorrow (Saturday) before there is finally a change.

Locally, it's been almost 2 months with no rain at my place. This is not all that unusual this time of year but frustrating none-the-less.

We are forecast to have a windy day tomorrow with isolated thunderstorms and rain areas.
Today was such a beautiful calm sunny day, but some more rain would be great. I'm just not looking forward to more windy weather. The wind last week caused a few big limbs to come down and all of the kid's outdoor toys ended up out in the paddock next to the house.

Not liking this heat that is preceding it however. I'm frantically getting some painting done on the interior of our house before the moisture rises.

I noticed quite a few widespread storms firing in SA yesterday evening with this change.

Russ is off to Sydney tomorrow so I'm bound to get something out this way lol. He'll be ready to photograph anything that he comes across on the journey down.

So far the only warnings in Vic for severe weather is for the alpine district in the NE. But that may change, once the system moves in. So far tonight there has been about 0.3mm in the home gauge. Not much, but a nice light shower nevertheless. Still, if the storms come in, it will be worth a few pics. But as I found with the last storms, capturing the few excellent thunderbolts was almost impossible.

Was an excellent late winter's day here - got to 20deg C for the first time in ages!!

Hi all,

Just thought I'd update a couple things here currently. It hit 36 degrees C at 1:58pm (EST) and the wind gusts have been very strong all day with several large branches brought down around my area alone. Seems to be the odd cell here and there but it looks very grey and highly dusty so it will make it a little hard to discern any significant storms cells for the moment. I will keep an eye on the radar however.

We've had the odd light shower but nothing great as yet.

Looks like a squally pattern is the order of the day.

Again, GFS is over doing the instability west of the ranges. dp has crashed to 4C at Moree with a temperature of 34C. Those bases are going to be sky high. Moisture in SE Qld is much better but with warm mid/upper level temps (for winter) there really isn't to much CAPE to work with. Replotting the Brisbane sounding for 28/18 only gives about 500j/kg of CAPE with a weak cap remaining.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Bega, Cooma and Tumbarumba.




Late edit : update on severe thunderstorms warnings, Northern NSW has a band of stroms approaching the east coast. Warning from BOM

For people in the ACT and parts of the SOUTH COAST, NORTHERN TABLELANDS, SOUTHERN TABLELANDS, NORTH WEST SLOPES, NORTH WEST PLAINS and SOUTH WEST SLOPES Forecast Districts.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Canberra, Goulburn, Armidale and Moree.




Looking at current radar and charts, and as BOM has mentioned in latest update, it seems to be tending towards strong winds as the main threat.

Interestingly I had two email warnings from EWN this morning waiting when I woke up about the forecast gales. Got quite windy here, but not too bad. Still gusting a bit but not as strong as this afternoon.

Hi guys,
I had no luck yesterday evening with any weather other than a few slight showers (much as today). The temps are definitely down on yesterday's brief summer preview.

I wish I could have bee down near Coonamble as the storms were really firing down that way! I heard one solitary rumble of thunder at 12:25am EST that woke me from partial sleep and got me all excited! "A storm! Finally after all this time" I thought. So I started going through the usual chasing check-list and stood out on the verandah to see what was actually happening and in which direction, only to not see or hear anything again? That was it. lol!

I wish the season would begin out here already as the suspense is killing me

New South Wales and Victoria - A number of Extremes for 29 August 2009

The following weather extremes and differences occurred across New South Wales and Victoria for Saturday 29 August 2009. Data mentioned here is obtained via various weather stations on the BOM Network.

Rainfall From 9 am 29/8/09 to 5 am 30/8/09

Good rainfalls occurred across portions of North East Victoria and portions of Southern inland New South Wales although higher falls occurred in the areas that received the thunderstorms. Rainfalls include 32 mm at Corryong Airport, Jingellic 34 mm and Mt Ginni 32 mm.

Portions of South West Victoria had some usefull rainfalls including 28 mm at Mt William and 32 mm at Wicklife.

Rainfalls were lower elsewhere.

Thunderstorms

Up to three thunderstorms occurred around Albury / Wodonga around 1.30 pm. Two storms were strong and a severe thunderstorm warning had been issued for hail, damaging wind and heavy rain. A strong thunderstorm cell passed west to east across Ettamogah and Thurgoona on Alburys Northern Outskirts and suburban areas. It dropped 6.4 mm at the airport but heavier falls would have occurred in the areas that experienced its full impact.

Temperatures

It reached 27C at Grafton at 4 pm and 30C at Casino at 2 pm.
It reached 35C at Moree at 2.25 pm being the peak maximum temperature for the town for the day.
It reached 26.8C at Badgereys Creek at 3.18 pm in Western Sydney.
The peak maximum temperatures for the day were 37C at Collarenebri, Lightning Ridge and Mungindi followed by 36C at Brewarrina. All the places are located in northern inland New South Wales.
It reached 27C at Bega (South Coast) and 28C at Jerry's Plains (Hunter Valley).
Generally except for Terrey Hills, maximum temperatures reached between 25C and 27C across Sydney.

Strong winds

A peak wind gust of 83 km/h was recorded at the Moree Weather Station at 5.03 pm and again at 5.05 pm.

A peak wind gust of 82 km/h was recorded at Richmond (North West Sydney) at 4.23 pm and sustained wind gusts of 67 km/h was recorded at the same weather station between 2.25 and 2.30 am on 30/8/2009.

A peak wind gust of 70 km/h was recorded at Badgereys Creek at 10.34 pm and a peak gust of 69 km/h was recorded at the same weather station at 4.30 am on 30/8/2009.

One can see that Saturday turned out to be a state of contrasts with wide variations of weather being recorded.
