NSW/VIC Thunderstorms/Showers 1 - 4 February 2010

Some storms finally getting going in Southern NSW moving West, South west and heading into northern VIC.
We have not had any thunderstorm activity since New Years Day so it is eagerly welcomed. Storms are high based with frequent CG's and dusty downbursts.
Just had a nice pink bolt hit VERY near the house!

Hey Kristy,

  yeah I just came from the weatherzone site.... (945pm EDT 1st Feb)
Storms moving from East to West in sthrn and western NSW
now thats something ya dont see too often !!!

Yeah it was pretty strange to be watching the storms come from the east as usually we almost always get our storms from the west.
It all felt and looked a bit back to front really!

Yesterday and last night we recieved 33mm of rain in heavy downpours and isolated thunderstorms. The humidity yesterday afternoon and last night was almost unbearable!There has been some amazing totals of rainfalls so far with one person calling in the radio this morning from Katamatite (30 km west of Yarrawonga) claiming to have already recieved 107mm.
My parents live at Berrigan and they had 62mm by 8pm last night, most of which came down within half an hour. Their yard was under water, as were the roads. There has been a lot of flash flooding locally.

Rainfalls for South West NSW:

A year ago Southern New South Wales and much of Victoria experienced a heatwave and of course Black Saturday being 7th February 2009. A year later, the opposite, excellent rainfalls occurred across a swathe of south west New South Wales and much of Victoria. Much of it significant. The best totals from the Riverina and North East Victoria include:-

Booroorban - 62 mm, Hay - 54 mm, Hume Weir Reservoir - 53 mm, Maude - 62 mm, Tarcutta - 30 mm (South West Slopes), Wangaratta - 56 mm(North East Victoria). Falls of 50 mm were fairly common to the area.   

For interest the Albury Airport Weather Station and Rain gauge on Borella Road recorded 52.2 mm and another 5.6 mm there after. At 3 am 5/2/10, there was 22.4 mm recorded but by 4 am a total of 52.2 mm had been recorded. That is almost 30 mm of rain in one hour indicating a substantial downpour passed over the area.

The downpours have resulted in February rainfall totals now being above average and a substantial contrast when compared to this period 1 year ago.
