8.8 Earthquake in Chile this morning.  Tsunami heading for Hawaii

An 8.8 earthquake struck Chile this morning, and sea-level readings have confirmed that a tsunami has been generated, and is surging west toward Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and even the West Coast of the U.S.  Based on the tsunami height model at left, it looks like Hawaii may be on the north side of the maximum heidi, with a forecast tsunami height of 10-20 feet, which would be devastating for low-lying areas.  Sirens have been blaring on Hawaii all morning at 30 minute intervals, creating a very scary scene along the low-lying areas of the island.  The tsunami is expected to affect the island beginning around 11:20 am Hawaiian time.  Updates can be found at the Pacific Tsunami Warning page (http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/), and we'll be updating the blog here at TVN throughout the event.  The following are some of the tsunami warning statements I've found.  Sadly, over 120 fatalities have already been reported in Chile, as the 8.8 quake epicenter occurred only 3 miles off the coast, and this number will likely increase substantially as damage reports become available.

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

                     1105 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010

MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.
