VERY slight chance of severe weather today



A powerful shortwave trough will rotate out over the Southern Plains today, and cut-off further north over eastern Nebraska by tomorrow as another trough surges east on its heels from the Southern Rockies.  If it were April or May right now, and sufficient instability were in place today there could be an outbreak of severe weather and tornadoes across the Southern Plains.  However, dewpoints are marginal in the warm sector except for in South Texas where lapse rates are relatively weak, and a huge precipitation shield will further stabilize the atmosphere from Northwest Texas northward.  Still though, behind this precip shield, the models are forecasting CAPE values of 500-1000 J/kg to emerge from South Texas, extending northward in an arc toward Northwest Oklahoma just ahead of the upper-level vort max.  Even though all models are showing the main LLJ axis to shift east of the instability by afternoon, there still could be sufficient low-level wind shear for weak tornadoes, especially just east of the upper-level low where enhanced vertical vorticity will reside.  Also, while the models don't do well in this area, there could be some intense supercells to the southwest of Del Rio in northeast Mexico -- climatology would favor this scenario since March is primetime for Mexican supercells.   Each of the model forecast maps shown here are from the 14z RUC for 21z this afternoon, and keep in mind the RUC was way over exaggerating moisture return and instability last year, so we'll see if this holds true once again for 2010.  Be sure to check out the live streaming page at http://TornadoVideos.net/live

Elk City Tornado Picture from Jimmy Taylor

Here is an incredible photo shot by Joel's dad, Jimmy Taylor, from 6 miles NNW of Elk City, OK, just after the tornado touched down.  He said it crossed the road about 1/4 mile in front of him, and that we could have driven into it no problem with the Dominator.  Incredible video from Mike Scantlin and Jeff Snyder still come!

Extreme Tornado Video from Hammon, OK!

Check out this up-close video from Mike Scantlin of StormChase.TV, only a few hundred yards away from the Hammon tornado.  This tornado was rated an EF2 by an NWS damage survey team today, and a second tornado was also confirmed further northeast of Hammon, causing no damage.  The 00z NAM is showing a potential tornado outbreak tomorrow over extreme northeast Oklahoma and southeast Kansas, southward across most of Arkansas and possibly Northeast Texas.  A large area of 1-2 0-1 km EHIs are forecast to reside over the entire warm sector south of a warm front draped across Eastern Kansas into central Missouri by 00z, and any discrete supercells that move through this environment will have a high chance of producing tornadoes.  Stay tuned for update, and be sure to check out http://TornadoVideos.net/live for live streaming video as tomorrow's severe weather event unfolds.

THIS TORNADO HAS BEEN RATED AS AN EF2 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE.   
THE RATING IS BASED ON SEVERAL SPOTS OF SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE...   
INCLUDING A HOME AND THE COUNTY BARN ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF HAMMON.

Tornado Outbreak Possible Afternoon through Overnight

A powerful storm system is forecast to eject over the Southern Plains into the Ozark Mountain Region through overnight, firing up a 40+ knot southerly LLJ underneath strong upper-level flow across the entire warm sector including eastern Oklahoma, southeast Kansas, Arkansas, and southern Missouri.  This will set the stage for a potentially record-breaking tornado outbreak late this afternoon, and especially overnight across much of Arkansas and southern Missouri.  This looks like a classic early spring outbreak pattern, with prime conditions for tornadoes over a large geographical area.  Stay tuned for updates, and be sure to check out http://TornadoVideos.net/Live throughout the day for live streaming video.  In the meantime, here are some incredible pictures taken by Colt Forney from the Hammon tornado yesterday.
