Tornadoes possible in Montana and North Dakota!
The next several days hold interesting severe weather possibilities for the northern Plains. Good directional shear and high instability will introduce a heightened threat for tornadoes over the eastern Montana high Plains into extreme western North Dakota this afternoon into the evening, and again tomorrow in most of western North Dakota. Saturday also holds the potential for severe weather on the northern Plains, but the
models have been a bit inconsistent from run to run. Still, this afternoon, discrete supercells are expected to fire over southeast Montana and travel ENE toward North Dakota; any storm that is able to hold together should be capable of producing tornadoes, given the favorable environment. The 18z NAM shows EHI of ~ 5 for this area, indicating that strong tornadoes are a possibility.
Also, on the east coast, there is a severe thunderstorm watch in effect from an area extending from southeast New York into northern Virginia. Damaging winds and large hail are the main threat for this area, but tornadoes cannot be ruled out with stronger storms.
