Looks like some good chase days coming up though I will not be part of that! Hopefully some of you will.

LIs progged to be -8 in some parts on Monday with decent shear.

Its been looking good for a couple of days now, hopefully there will be some decent cells to chase. Its the best I have seen for some time, so hopefully the models hold true and it comes to fruition.

There is only a slight flow through into southwest QLD at this stage.

Would be nice to see some action from you again! I toyed with the idea of heading out to Tenterfield this morning but decided against it due to it being a bit risky. Supercell has tracked from near Maryborough to near Macedon, VIC (3.45pm EDT). Hail was reported early on according to the warning.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Ballarat, Bendigo, Maryborough, Castlemaine, Kyneton and Bacchus Marsh.

Severe thunderstorms have been observed on radar to the area southeast of Maryborough, moving in a southeasterly direction. Reports have been received of hail to 2cm diameter from this storm cell. Further storms may develop within the warning area.

Upper Western N.S.W. Storm Report Sunday November 7th 2010

Hi guys,

Wow radar and lightning tracker has lit up like a Xmas tree on the last few frames around Moree. Shauno, I hope you can get out there and see something. Would be nice to see some action from you again! I toyed with the idea of heading out to Tenterfield this morning but decided against it due to it being a bit risky. If things continue the way they are atm I'll be kicking myself!!!

Yep went straight out for a look and a few shots earlier Pato! We have a good pulse setup currently in this area. Updrafts are huge and anvils are pretty crisp coming from the two larger cells sitting around us currently. Many isolated smaller cells growing rapidly around the Ridge now also (3:56pm ESDT). There was a nice base on the main updraft as I arrived out there around 3pm. Took plenty of photos so I'll try and put something together later if I don't see any action tonight. Managed to see one CG but conditions are far too bright out. The cell was around 30k's to our NNE and pretty slow moving.

I will definitely keep a close eye on things now. I'm hoping they stick around until tonight for some lightning ops.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING - MELBOURNE AREA

for DESTRUCTIVE WIND, FLASH FLOODING and LARGE HAILSTONES

Northern and parts of the
Inner,
Eastern and
Western Local Warning Areas.
Issued at 4:04 pm Sunday, 7 November 2010.
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:05 pm, a very dangerous thunderstorm was detected on weather radar near Mt Macedon and the area northwest of Gisborne. This thunderstorm is moving towards the southeast. This very dangerous thunderstorm is forecast to affect Craigieburn, Gisborne and Sunbury by 4:35 pm and Broadmeadows, Greensborough and Preston by 5:05 pm.
Destructive winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.
A severe thunderstorm has been observed on radar currently just to the southwest of Macedon. Hail to 2cm diameter and damaging wind gusts have been reported out of this storm. The storm is currently tracking towards the southeast.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home.
* keep away from creeks and drains.
* do not drive vehicles through flooded areas.
* stay indoors if possible.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* if you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees
* listen to the radio for storm updates
* switch off your computer and electrical appliances
The next warning is due to be issued by 5:05 pm.
A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Central, Northern Country and North Central districts.

It does have a distinct hook echo on its western side on radar...

The main cell got dominated by outflow and has currently split up and died - but the rain and wind are still possible to reach severe levels in the next 20 mins or so...

5.45pm EDT: The isolated strong storm riding the Liverpool Ranges to the west of Quirindi and Scone, NSW is interesting. Jimmy is in the area.

Hail Storm in Gisborne

Hey Guys,
Just got back from a chase of the Macedon Supercell. Was an incredible storm with amazing structure. My chase started about 3:30 this arvo as I watched a cell on radar in the Maryborough district explode. I jumped in the car and headed from Melton, up to Gisborne, Riddells Creek to just south of Romsey. Managed to stay out of the outflow and get clear view of the base most of the time. Sorting through the photos I appeared to have captured a funnel cloud in two of the shots.

Very nice base there! Clean structure. Did you get any other pictures of the base as it approached?

Storm Chase Dunedoo to Coolah to Quirindi

I decided to chase storms in this region given the prospect of severe storms including supercells to develop in the region. The first cell developed just west of Dunedoo.



It seemed to remain weak for some time but as it approached Coolah really intensified.I tried to maintain position in between the two main cells with a mountain range in between!






I was able to spot the interesting rain free base that David suggested produced a brief couplet. I encountered hailstones to 2cm from this storm as it intensified E of Coolah. The storm gradually weakened so I had one only option to head to Merriwa and get over the range to Willow Tree. The storm persisted with a nice base and microbursts before it eventually rapidly collapsed moving back to an easterly direction.







I got some lightning but most of the lightning was further west.

Hey Jimmy,
I took a series of about 50 shots of the SC as it approached. I'll have a sort through them, and post any that may reveal further structure. It spilt almost immediately as it crossed the ranges, with the southern section breaking up, and the nothern section seemed to merge into cells further east. I chased further east on a secondary road which unfortunately came to an abrupt end, effectively ending my chase. So I only captured the SC for the last 30 mins before the split. Conditions stayed relatively calm in my position, as I remained away from the out-flow. The storm was quite lightning active, but restricted to intra-cloud lightning, mainly from the anvil.
Had a blast with this storm, very photogenic. Can't wait for more to come. Perhaps Friday........

Typical, the day I sell my car we get a good storm. anyway....


I was still able to get some stuff here at my home in Miranda (South Sydney), We had a few hailstones, biggest i found just smaller than a 5c coin. When i say a few i mean you had to actually look hard to find them in the grass.

Few good strikes around but due to living at the bottom of a hill I don't have a good view.

Hi all,

I'm just watching this line coming towards now here at Lightning Ridge but, though the lightning looks impressive on LT & radar it all looks a bit weak -sort of blueish and messy. If the rain precedes it all to heavily then I'll wait until it passes and see what happens.

I still have to process the structure shots from yesterday's cells. We had a very active cell near Walgett last night. It remained highly active until the early hours of this morning! I stood in the back yard watching the flickering which was about every second on average. Shame it wasn't here or a little closer!
