Hi Mike,

Can you clarify "the storm was overhead"? I was under the impression there was no storm and the volcanic plume produced all the lightning? Do you have other source of information otherwise?

Hi Mike,

Not suggesting you are wrong here but I would not suggest it is a reliable source - media! Not that a thunderstorm could not have passed over the region. Is there any way to verify this further or is there another source - perhaps scientific that has covered this?

Only posting what the media said - but there must be some data somewhere. I'll have a hunt around and see what turns up re this.   Seems quite feasible but I would agree that the ash plume would be the main culprit and not the storm.
