Storms firing; severe thunderstorm watch issues!
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for western Kansas and the OK and TX panhandle region. Right now a cluster of storms is located just southeast of the DDC (Dodge City) radar site, with further storm development anticipated to the south and north at any time. Earlier today it appeared as though a strong cap would suppress thunderstorm development in the Panhandle region, so it will be interesting to see how things develop as the evening progresses. These storms will likely be mainly hail-producers, but tornadoes cannot be ruled out entirely. There is a lot of energy in the atmosphere, with 0-1km helicity values more than enough produce rotating storms. Storms will likely be fairly high-based though, given higher than ideal LCL heights. Verne Carlson is currently awaiting development in west-central Kansas, with other teams possibly streaming in ght DDC areas southward later on.
