Well heres some pics from Coffs today. The tally was 5 storms for the day!

Had a brief chase yesterday afternoon (Mon 8th Oct) with my daughter Katrina as work restricted me somewhat. So many large cells, anvil rain and then stratus racing into the huge storms made photography quite difficult, but it was awesome being amongst it. Random powerful CGs hitting nearby then blinding torrential rain and hail from the cell near Coraki were a lot of fun! Stones were 2cm there - about the same size as what fell at home from another storm.

Hi guys,
All the photos are great!
I'll put in my two cents worth as we had 5 small, totally unexpected, LP cells sneak through very early this morning. The first came through moving typically W to E at 12:04am along with two others, one to our N and one to the SE around 30k's away (from what I could gather from the lightning/thunder timing). At 1:45am two more rather larger cells moved through. I could see a nice anvil shield overhead clearly on the first with each decent lightning strike (which were all fast non-staccato bolts). The second hovered out to the SW but had great overshooting tower structure visible again from lightning flashes. By 2:06am the cooling atmosphere switch was flicked and all lightning had ceased totally.
I couldn't manage a shot, everywhere I pointed the camera, it would hit behind me! I ended up with the dreaded "black photo" syndrome, but it was definitely worth watching the show!
No real rain to report as far as mm, maybe a 'drops/per square metre' measurement might be more accurate? lol
This week should be interesting! It is great to finally see some good activity and top storm structure, hail and supercell photos!

Wow.  Great posts everyone and a very intense storm by the looks of all the lightning and hail!  How are you guys getting all those daytime lightning shots so easily?  You must be using a repetative shots or keeping it open for 10 second periods?  I still can't get photos like that!

saw a beautiful storm on the way to boondall will post my vids of the lightning as soon as i can! the videos are of the storm just as we were crossing the gateway bridge such an awesome veiw of the storm! By the time we got to boondall the storm was close by and had awesome crawlers and cg's but the rain and concert times prevented me from getting any pics at all, just the 2 video's. It must have looked funny to see me hanging out the car window with a camera filming n the gateway lol

Oh my... what a busy few days for the NSW North Coast / SE Qld!

A set of massive supercells have gone through the Lismore area over the last few hours. The latest Severe thunderstorm Warning from the BoM says:
Lismore has been impacted by a very severe thunderstorm with giant hail the size of tennis balls and heavy rain. 20c piece hail was also reported at Grafton.

Sounds even better than yesterday's effort.

I can't wait to hear the reports from Michael B and others in that area!!

Lismore Hailstorm 1.45pm 9th October 2007.  Yes - the car has some fresh dents !

The Lismore CBD and South Lismore have really copped it. So many smashed up cars, broken windows and windscreens, and the leaf litter - everywhere.  The roof and windows on the church is broken - the one near the court house.

I got hit by 6cm stones with violent winds - absolutely incredible, a second storm 1 hour later dropped 2cm stones. Very heavy rain too with flash flooding.

I am moving back from Adelaide to Sydney in 2 weeks so looking forward to some better quality storms. But my girlfriend on the North Coast (Woolgoolga) has been telling me how good some of the storms have been there. Only problem is she is suffering the after effects of a strike on Sunday afternoon, she was inside the house near the front door when a bolt hit the verandah. She felt like someone had hit her arm with a baseball bat and her daughter got knocked off her feet. Obviously a bit of ground effect happening there. They have both been feeling a bit run down since.

Well i've just finished cleaning up the mess inside my house.Glass everywhere, leaves and hail. i love storms but that scared the crap out of me. i've got 5 windows with holes in them with 3 others cracked. i heard an unconfirmed report of roof damage(hail or wind?) to 30 houses in the lismore heights/goonellabah region. not sure of the validity of this but wouldn't be surprised. just about every house in my street has windows smashed( i live in south lismore). if i had to guess i'd say the hail was up to 5-6cm in places with most of it around the 2-4cm mark. just saw my inlaws car, its a virtual write off every panel looks like has it been used for golf practice. anyway thats my experience of the day. it will be a day i won't forget in a hurry. just hope that everyone in lismore and surrounds is ok

Beautiful storm,
    Had a few rumbles in the morning around 11:00 and then the nice cell on the radar around 1:00pm East of Drake moving SE could see active Cg's in the West around 2:00 with deep mammatus and the gustfront came in around 3:00 from towards Evans Head bringing 55km/hr variable winds and got 38mm with no hail more storms forecasted for the rest of the week...

haha, I was out having lunch here in Sydney at the same time and the sky could not have been anymore different! Very impressive shots of the base Michael and quintessential north coast violent hp structure. Almost all of the pics suggest that the base is undercut, although, interestingly, the last pic shows a nice wall cloud having taken shape. Anything you can report on w/r to the storm's evolution at around this time? (as in what you could see at the time).

Very nice storm. Great work Michael! I saw a brief report on the news but I'm sure they barely scratched the surface of how much damage must have occurred.

David C, could you please elaborate a little on your comment above: I thought the whole big circular lowering, present in all photos, was the wall cloud? Also I'm not sure what 'undercut' means? Thanks!

Hi all,
Now thats what I call a storm! I hope nobody in Lismore was hurt and everyone was insured to some extent! You've set an amazing precedent to follow with those shots Michael (some of the best shelf structure I've ever seen!) and I hope you escaped unscathed from taking those unreal hail photos! Was there much lightning around? I'd imagine there was by the look of it!

I heard the temps dropped from 30º to 15º! If thats correct than it's no wonder the hail was so large!

I can't speak for Kane on his shots at Coffs, but in low light I use high F-stops and aperture priority to get a second or two out of an exposure and get lucky with a bolt occurring during that time. Still means lots of deleting !

EDIT - Shauno - not anywhere near as much lightning yesterday compared to Monday's storms - not sure why....
