NSW/QLD Storms 4 - 7 Dec 2009
« on: 05 December 2009, 02:32:40 PM »
Well it looks like there is some chance of some thunderstorms / thundery rain to develop tomorrow (5) Saturday and possibly Sunday. The stormcast from BSCH shows a high cape around Coffs harbour 4pm 5th dec. It would be very nice to hear that thunder again!

Below is the BSCH chart

Upper Western / North West N.S.W. Storm Report 4th December 2009
Hi guys,
Well we finally had a nice little cell pop up from pretty minimal conditions (to say the least!). The isolated cell came from a pretty sparse Cu field around 6:30pm EDT and sat out to the North of town, possibly 30-40k's away. Russ and I saw the first CG fire out just as the anvil got going and one or two updrafts were visible overshooting. By 7pm we got out on it but by this time it had moved around 50k's to our NE but really packed a punch lightning-wise for a tiny isolated cell! Some Mammatus was present on the rear right edge of the anvil, mostly visible when the lightning fired. It averaged one strike every 5 seconds or so, this was more frequent with the updrafts towering now and again.
It moved out over Mungindi as we shot it and by this time had a nice split on radar. We let it go around 9:20pm EDT as by this time it was almost on the other side of Mungindi (around 110k's from here as the crow flies).

I will post a few shots tomorrow.

Nice to see something! It's been a slow start to the season out here to say the least lol.

Kindest regards,
Shauno

What does everyone think of tomorrow I was having trouble deciding, I looked at the wz forums and they were concerned about the moisture but otherwise their is fairly good instability and shear is 8/10 and they say it would be around the Kyogle area.

So what do you guys think and is anyone chasing tomorrow or Sunday even?

Clayton,

I fully agree that tomorrow looks good, except moisture might be a big problem. Dew points are looking healthier now in NE NSW. Whether this
moisture will just mixed out or not tomorrow is another question. If we were to have dew points in the the high teens with temps in the high 20's/low 30's it could get quite nasty.

December 4 2009

I was very lucky to score a very nice lightning active line. The conditions were perfect for lightning photography, no rain above, not much rain under the cells either so the lightning was very visible, slow moving cells and a lot of cg's made for probably the best oportunity to get some good lighting shots ive had yet.  I missed so many great bolts not having a tripod, its currently broken but I did score some shot I've been trying ages to get :D

Hi guys,

Enak - very impressive lightning show!

Headed up to near Taree yesterday evening in order to be in position for something possible today (with family it is rather difficult to get away).

Here are some images from yesterday evening!

Hey guys im back!

Today im keen to chase up those storms but again it would be closer to Ballina area. I make my mind up (depending on observations) to chase in Ballina area instead if necessary. Kyogle line to Clarence Valley today looking good but won't be surprised for severe storms from them.

Current conditions is marginal today with very warm temps early in the day but increasing humidity through the day i expected.

Upper Western / North West N.S.W. Storm Photos 4th December 2009
Hi all,
First off, AMAZING photos guys!

That lightning is spectacular Kane!

It's been a while since I've seen mammatus of that magnitude also Jimmy! Reminds me of photos taken in the US!  ;D

Here's a few photos from the single isolated storm cell we had last night. Times here were starting around 7pm until 9:20pm EDT when we finished. Most of these photos were taken using my 75-300mm IS kit lens. I had never used it on lightning before so I thought this was as good a storm as any to trial it on. The storm was nearing and hitting Mungindi while we took these. Always amazes me just how far away we can see these storms from here! The last photo (with the stars) was taken just as the storm was passing through Mungindi.

Kindest regards,
Shauno

As I felt this morning, just could not get excited about the storm factor, tomorrow is looking like a "no go or show " for SEQ as well. Just not enough moisture and the cap is pretty much unbreakable. Storm index has been running very low and soundings for Brisbane do not indicate  a good set up  that is  needed to produce the storms.

Well the thunderstorms sure have developed now. A recent thunderstorm just missed up and headed up north.  It originated in the Coraki area. At the stage where it hit Maclean’s ridges Michael Baths webcam showed hail on it. There is a Messy type sky and more thunder now from thundery rain from the west. Here is an image of the storm that headed north with serious hail shaft.

Well today was a great day. Not so much because of a direct hit from a storm but because it was nice to hear thunder once more. After the cell from Coraki went northways to Byron Bay a second cell developed just north of Evans head. I was able to capture 2 CGs from this but for some reason they were not in the cloud they appeared on the ground so I only have a anvil crawler here. The storm has created a nice sunset of pink. Wind is gone now as well and thunderstorms are still going nuts around Yamba.
