MAJOR WINTER STORM SHAPING UP!!!

The central Plains into the midwest is bracing for a potentially crippling blizzard, which is expected to begin impacting Kansas and points north and east tomorrow. Most of Kansas and Nebraska could see 12" or more of snow by Wednseday morning, but the huge complicating factor is the 30+ MPH sustained winds that are expected in conjunction with the "atmostpheric bomb" that can be seen on the surface wind map above. This will likely lead to incredible drifting, closed highways and Interstates and possibly power outages, not to mention dangerous wind chills. The system will progress gradually  east into western Missouri, Iowa, southern Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin and northern Illinois Wednesday, where even more snow is possible by mid-day Wednseday, along with 30-50 MPH winds! Accumulating ice is possible in the central Appalachians/Laurel Highlands during the same timeframe; there is also a heightened severe weather threat in the southeast! Andrew Butler will be streaming this snow event from Minnesota, and several other streamers will likely be out as well, including Reed and Chris and members of the TwisterData, Thunder and ETT stream teams for the winter storm event, as well as Andrew Pritchard from Illinois. Dennis Sherrod will likely be out streaming in the Gulf coast area for the severe weather end of the spectrum. Stay tuned for updates, and be sure to follow the event on the Live page!

UPDATE: David Drummond will also be streaming a potentially historic severe wind event from west Texas! He says it is being compared to a record breaking event in 1996 that caused widespread damage across the area, with winds anywhere from 60-75 MPH over a wide area, with higher gusts and potentially approaching 120 MPH at Guadalupe pass, where he will try to set up unless it is closed. MASS CHAOS!!!

INCREDIBLE storm pounding the U.S. from El Paso to Michigan

The first major winter storm for the Central U.S. is well underway this morning, with heavy snow falling across northern Kansas and southern Nebraska.  This massive shield of moderate to heavy snow is about to hammer Stream Thunder's position in extreme northwest MO, so be sure to check out their live stream at the "Live" page linked above throughout the morning and afternoon!  Dave Holder is with them, and will be producing near-live Holdercasts from the field throughout this event as well.  Chris and I have just left Norman, OK for a target of somewhere north of Grand Rapids, MI for this evening.  We should be hitting Michigan right about when the extremely heavy freezing rain and snow moves in, so be sure to check out our live stream later this evening.  We'll also have Andrew Butler streaming in MN and Andrew Pritchard stationed in northern IL during this event.

While the snow may be stealing the headlines for now, the most extreme weather will likely be found in the El Paso area today, and especially across Guadalupe Pass where incredible wind gusts to over 100 mph might hammer the area.  David Drummond will be streaming this event live throughout the day on http://TornadoVideos.net/Live and providing frequent updates on his own blog.  Check out this statement below from the El Paso NWS:

THE FIRST WIDESPREAD SIGNIFICANT COOL SEASON HIGH WIND EVENT IS FORECAST TUESDAY AS AN UPPER TROUGH PASSES EAST INTO THE SOUTHERN PLAINS. HIGH WINDS WILL DEVELOP ACROSS A LARGE PORTION OF SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO...THE WEST TEXAS MOUNTAINS...AND THE PERMIAN BASIN. HISTORICALLY...THIS EVENT APPEARS COMPARABLE TO THE JANUARY 17, 1996 HIGH WIND EVENT THAT PRODUCED A RECORD 128 MPH WIND GUST THROUGH GUADALUPE PASS AND SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO...THE UPPER TRANS PECOS...AND THE WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE PERMIAN BASIN. AFFECTED AREA...THE GUADALUPE...DELAWARE...DAV IS MOUNTAINS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE THE STRONGEST WINDS. DANGEROUS WIND GUSTS NEAR 120 MPH ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH GUADALUPE PASS. WIND GUSTS NEAR 90 MPH ARE ALSO POSSIBLE THROUGH THE DAVIS AND DELAWARE MOUNTAINS.

Massive winter storm continues

Snow totals of 12-16" have been registered in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota as the intense winter storm pushes gradually east. Blizzard conditions are occurring throughout this same area, as northwest winds scream across the flat farmland at 30-40 MPH, with higher gusts! Needless to say, drifting snow is going to be a substantial problem. Below are some photos from Curtis McDonald of stream Thunder, taken earlier from their location in northwest Missouri. Reed will be updating later on the event in Michigan -- he and Chris are currently streaming HUGE waves and snow squalls on Lake Michigan.

Incredible lake effect event and blizzard pounding the Great Lakes!

As extremely cold southwest to westerly winds have been blowing across the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, intense snowbands have developed in the favored snowbelt regions of Southwest Lower Michigan, and in the Buffalo and Watertown, NY areas.  Here in Grand Rapids, MI, we have been experiencing 2+ inch per hour snowfall rates this morning with gusts to 40 mph, which has created blizzard conditions and treacherous road conditions.  As I write this post, we are getting hammered with some of the heaviest snow I have ever seen, and we are about to deploy to stream live video for the rest of the event.  Check out our live stream at TornadoVideos.net/live throughout the day as we document this historic 2009 blizzard!  Also, we've been uploading short video blogs to our I-phone app, Storm Troopers, throughout the event.  We'll also be posting a highlight video on our Youtube channel later tonight.  Stay tuned for updates!
