Fog - VIC/NSW
« on: 04 June 2008, 05:31:19 AM »
Is there anyone else experiencing thick fog in their area this morning?

It is very thick here in Melbourne - visibility is down to 100m in some places.

Looks like it is still foggy according to the VIS satpics - is that right ?    Quite a lot of flight delays to Melb AP according to news sites.

A number of flights diverted from landing in Melbourne to Adelaide this morning. Here in Sydney the Inner Harbour and Parramatta River ferry services were suspended.

On the drive from Rydalmere to Chatswood would just have called it light mist. The TV photos tonight from the chopper just showed it very closely following the water here in Sydney.

Even as I write, it is still foggy here - and the sun hasn't even poked through for the last 2 days - also a few spots of rain were seen on the windscreen of my work vehicle (the coach) earlier today.

Not sure why, but on both days a BoM rep said the fog would clear by lunch and it never did. To ask a question from the late Gordon Sumner-Miller, "Why is it so?"

Load up the soundings for Melbourne 00z 3rd and 4th June. You will see a very strong inversion, particularly on Tuesday.

I remember only one event in Sydney that had fog all day - think it was a July day. Jimmy might recall the date - there was an AMOS meeting that night.

Jimmy the database. Errr database error :) - you are talking about  40 year old human brain here. I recall there was a day or two where the fogs were basically all day but don't recall the dates. There are events where the fog remains up to 1pm but then clears. I would suspect and if I recall correctly the specific events mentioned above were cloudy as well. This introduces the problem of heating to help create convection and mixing and fog clearing. It seems the case of Melobourne Big Pete refers to it may also be cloudy as well.

Jimmy, I think Mellow-bourne sounds about right at the moment - apart from one storm ripping up the competition in Rugby League, there are no other storms here at the moment. The fog did clear today and was welcomed by many (including myself).

There is a nice strong breeze blowing too. I think also it is the driest start to winter here for some time.

Thick morning fog / then showers follow 10/6/2008

A weather phenomena not common for Sydney but worth a post.

Thick morning fog occurred across much of Sydney 10/6/2008 which disrupted early morning flights and I am aware of two international flights being diverted to Brisbane.

From 8 am as the fog begins to thin, a band of showers move across the city. The fog slowly breaks up as it starts to rain across the Auburn / Lidcombe / Parramatta area.

Just before midday, the showers and low cloud clear with some sunshine to follow.

Certainly not a common weather event where a rain event follows a morning fog but this happened today 10/6/2008.

I woke about 3:30 this morning for a toilet call and looked out the back to see quite thick fog here at Rydalmere, thickest it has been since I moved here at the beginning of November last year.

By the time I woke up again for work at 7:15 it had lifted and was pretty clear here. No problems between here and Chatswood. I see it is forecast again for the morning.
