Sydney's Warm Sunny March 2010

Following the February rain and downpours, Sydney has been enjoying a warm, relatively stable and sunny March and several days have seen maximum temperatures reach or exceed 30C. Due to the position of the high pressure cells, Sydney has had a warm dry month to date with few interruptions. The only rain of significance to date has occurred overnight 5/6 before clearing early Saturday morning to a very warm day.

As at 26/3/2010, the number of 30C days across the city ranges from 2 to 9 with the Western suburbs having 9 such days. This includes Penrith and Prospect (9 days), Campbelltown (8 days), Parramatta and Richmond 6 (days). While the night time temperatures appear to be close to average, daytime temperatures are currently above average.

The warm spell is forecast to continue until at least Monday with more 30C days expected at least across some western suburban areas before the onset of Autumn and showers by Tuesday.

Western Sydney experienced another day 26/3/2010 where maximum daytime temperatures reached at least to 34C to 35C which is well above the long term average for March. A full run down of March temperatures across Sydney will be provided at the end of the month.

March 2010 weather details for Sydney

Please find attached a table describing the weather for 7 localities across Sydney. Generally the city enjoyed a warmer than normal month. Daytime average temperatures were all above average but nightime average temperatures were generally closer to the average.

The rainfall totals are added in. In particular, much of the rain occurred during the last three days of the month being 29-31 March. If it had not been for that rain event, rainfall totals would have been significantly below average. In the end, rainfall was closer to the average.

Generally as a result of a settled period from the 12 to the 29 March, Sydney enjoyed a warmer than normal month.

The details are obtained from Bureau of Meteorology Weather Stations and long term weather data 2/4/2010.
