Just to let the newcomers know, we meet each Wednesday night for a live Australian weather discussion on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) on the undernet network. The meeting time is at 9pm EST (7pm WST, 8:30pm CST, 10pm EDT in Tasmania, 11am GMT) on Wednesday nights. We chat on the #Weather channel. If your interested you need to download an irc client, the best irc client is mIRC and you can download that at: http://www.mirc.co.uk/ If you want to know more about IRC and what it is, take a look at: http://www.htmltips.com/patrick/irc.html The best way to get on the #weather channel is to do this: In the status window in mirc, type /server NewBrunswick.NJ.US.Undernet.Org 6665 this then should show that you are connected after a few seconds, after that then type /join #weather mIRC setup also has a list of undernet servers that you can use also. If you have any questions about #weather on irc please email at jacob at iinet.net.au Thanks. My name is Dominique and I am 18 year old girl, who is about to sit the HSC in a few weeks. I am starting to go insane sitting at my desk, revising theorems and the like, so i am on here to recover. I live in Sydney, well, near sydney, and would like to know, what sort of things do we discuss on this list? I read a brief on this, and it was saying that you guys like to talk about all thing autumn or something..i'm a little confused...but anyway, that's me :) hope to hear from y'all soon :) Dominique -- /,,,// ( O - ) =====================================oOOo=(_)=oOOo=== Dominique Farago domfar at ideal.net.au AUSTRALIA .oooO who said computers made life easier? Yay we might get some storms in Perth tonight but feel they might be a bit to the East of Perth (maybe a chase in stall). It seems that you Eastern Australian chasers have it quite organized when it comes to a storm. Over here I really sort of play it by sight and sound. Lots of driving and gazing. Anyway I am keeping my fingers crossed for a night on the prowl. That list has been stopped now, and is now being used for aussie-weather. On this list we talk about Australian weather, such as current conditions, storms, extreme weather events, forecasts etc.. from around the nation. I'm 28 and live in Gosford (just north of Sydney for those from far away). I've had a long-running love of storms etc, however my real interest in weather is based around my involvement with the NSW Rural Fire Service. It started as just being able to understand the relationship between temperature, humidity and wind speed & direction and what that did to fire danger and/or running fires. Now they are starting to use terms like Dew Point and so on which has led me on a quest for knowledge and, ultimately, to this list. Predictions of the summer that faces us are most welcome too, ditto for winter. this game used to be about putting out fires in hot weather. Now I almost feel like it involves a bit of rocket science as well. :) My minor interest is more selfish. I ride a motorbike and knowing what the weather is likely to do is a big bonus. Thanks to Laurie for pointing me here. Cheers, Eric -- ------------------------------------------- Eric J. The strongest gusts occured around 1pm here in Sydney roughly from the N-W corresponding to the approach of the front. Some brief showers accompanied the front. To give you some idea of the thermal gradient driving the wind, the maximum prefrontal temperature recorded at Macquarie Uni. was about 26 C at 12pm; after the passage of the front, the temperature had dropped to about 16 C just after 1pm. I only saw the damage after seeing the news when I got home from work. It did gust to about 40 knots in Parramatta around late morning ahead of showers that dropped the temp by about 7 degrees and also abating the wind as the thermal gradient reduced. On another note, the CSIRO NOAA AVHRR site has updated their page for Eastern Australia, and now have a separate page devoted to storms with an archive of the past few images: http://www.marine.csiro.au/~lband/storm/ I had made a sugesstion to Kim Badcock just yesterday to have a small archive and increase the image to cover all of SE Qld - and they have done it already! The images are very large - but also the best on the net for Australia. regards, Michael At 20:19 6/10/98 +1000, you wrote: >Storms of winds over 120km/h were reported in Sydney this morning - >that's what we heard up here anyway. Perhaps there is a RealAudio feed because reception outside of the Brisbane region will be quite difficult without a good receiver + antenna (besides D-layer absorption + interference from 3BM, West Melbourne). - Paul.
