The Navy satpics are up to date and high resolution (4km) and NASA is nicely
coloured....better than the JCU!!

Hi All,

The most detailed and up to date GMS-5 satpics can be found here:
http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/gms.shtml

Eastern Australian image:
http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/gmsd/gmsd.jpg

Western Australian image:
http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/gmsc/gmsc.jpg

These have great resolution for Australia and are updated minutes after the
image is processed. Image sizes are about 200k. Unfortunately there is no
archive.

These are all linked to from my satpic link page:

regards, Michael

In the western suburbs of Sydney we get some remarkable temperature ranges
as well. Looking through my readings I found on 17/10/94 a range of 7.8 to
37.0
Often the range is about 25 degrees in Spring, but I can only find this one
close to 30.

Ceduna ended up with 40/5 (only reported to whole degrees). Nearby
(relatively speaking!) Polda had 37.4/3.5 for a range of 33.9 and
Kyancutta had 38.2/4.5 for a range of 33.7. I'll be interested if
Blair can fossick out the record. Top temps across SA yesterday were
almost universally 10+ above average, with 15 centres >=15 above
average -- on a quick analysis, Whyalla's 42 was the biggest departure
at +19.

The automatic weather station network is sending in a stream of SPECIs
triggered by strong winds this morning.

Some of the higher gusts since 3am have been Braidwood 56 knots
(104km/h) at 7am, Bega the same speed at 6am with a temperature of
28.2 (!), 60 (111) at Cape Grim at 6am, and 65 (120) at Thredbo at
4.47am. Many places across all three states reporting sustained speeds
of 30 knots + and gusts 40+. Here at Blackheath right now (11.45am
EST) I'd estimate 30 gusting 45.

There's a tremendous pressure gradient across the southeast -- from
1016.0 at Cape Byron to 977.6 at Maatsuyker Island at 9am EST. The AVN
850hPa forecasts for tonight have a temperature of 18 over Newcastle
and zero over Melbourne, with only slow northward progression, and no
easing, of that gradient over the following 36 hours. The AVN for 00z
Tuesday has an 850 temp of minus 3 covering most of eastern Vic and
southeastern NSW, with a minimum of -6 to cross Tassie early Tuesday
morning!

Well I was at an outside party from about 8pm until 1am and was able to
witness a pretty nice lightning display the whole time. CC lightning was
most but a few CG's in there. Also just over the road from the party a
tree blew over cutting out the power and music (damn). I think yesterday's
severe advice for melbourne would've been due to the already gale force
winds. I guess they (BOM) thought that the winds might exceed 90km in the
storms giving them a severe rating.

Well after all that, there were a couple of fast tracking storms (of the
silent type) to the north of us up until about 2am - but virtually no action
and little lightning. Surprised there was so little damage around the
eastern suburbs after the blow yesterday.

Today - Sc 8/8, wind still moderate, about 21.8 degrees - grey with the odd
drop of light rain in passing.

Well, there's always next time....

As I predicted a couple of days ago the wind stayed NW with humidity below
30%, no storms here, but the cloud is thickening once it passes out to sea.

Now another brave prediction, tomorrows forecast RAIN with west to SW winds,
I don't think so.

I read in a book - The colour of lightning indicates the content of the
surrounding air. The flash will appear red if there is rain in the cloud
and blue if there is hail. Significant amounts of dust in the atmosphere
results in yellow lightning and white lightning indicates low humidity (no
rain).

I've just returned to Blackheath after a motorbike ride to Bathurst
along the highway and back via Sunny Corner and Cullen Bullen. When I
left Blackheath at 15.15 EST there was a wall of cloud, rain and gunge
stretching west from the Kanimbla Valley through about Tarana in the
direction of Bathurst. I rode for 2.75 hours mostly dodging the heavy
rain, and when I returned on mostly dry roads, I learnt that the wall
of cloud, rain and gunge arrived shortly after I left, but still
hadn't arrived in Lithgow when I passed through at 17.45. The
cloudmass appears to be streaming in from WNW and the whole thing is
moving only very slowly northwards. It's now (19.00) been raining
moderately here for about 3 hours.

A cold front will move across the State on Monday with wind tending cooler,
gusty west to southwesterly. Showers will become more widespread,
especially in
southern and mountain districts with local hail and thunder developing
near the coast.

Us Melbournians may be lucky again tomorrow.

We have lightning activity to our W-NW on the mountains around 7:30pm. Seems
reasonably active with structure at the rear end displayed by the lightning.
Bit of a lightning display. I thought I had observed what seemed to be
anvils earlier. Geoff and I are excited about the prospect of a lightning
display over the next few hours.

Laurier, are you copping it??

Jimmy
GPATS is a lightning detection system with sensors scattered thruout
Aus. A lot of the power authorities use it to norrow down the source of
power interruptions. The bureau with the use of "Mcidas" has the ability
to have the latest GPATS overlayed over the latest sat pic.
With the high res. visual sat pic and the zoom function of "Mcidas" you
can actually make out individual cell tops - really cool.

Hopfully in the not to distant future this information will be made
available on the web with charges made on a per hit bases instead of the
annual surcharge system now in place - keep your eye on the registered
users page on the bureaus home page.

regards
Brett

Another small cell is approaching Richmond in NW suburbs at 9.20pm local.
About the same size (on radar) as the first which shot through at about
60km/h. A couple of lightning flashes and brief rain from the earlier cell
at 8.30pm, though we were on the southern boundary of that cell.

The radar is also showing general light to moderate rain spreading
throughout the Sydney metro area, extending north. A few spit now at
Oakhurst (Blacktown shire) now (9.35pm).

Not much in it - just a few brief showers and a little lightning.

Hi everyone,
Not much to get excited about - some large rain drops just started
falling here and I can here some thunder but I don't think there is much
in it.

Nothing here, i saw one flash of lightning, no thunder, and it rained at a
medium rate for a short while at about 8:30 or 9:00.
I'm in Cherrybrook, a north western suburb of Sydney, but to the east of
Jimmy.
The max. temp. today, as recorded by me, was 36.0 after a low of 20.9

Thunder and lightning is now just to my NW. Radar shows rain rates into the
20-40mm band but not much in it. The cell is fairly small and imbedded in
the northern edge of the rain band. It is moving very quickly. Apart from a
local microburst as the BoM has forecast, there is nothing severe about it.
At least if this had occurred a few hours ago there would have been
something to 'see' !

My aneroid barometer has detected a rise in air pressure of about 5 mb
from 999Hpa to 1004Hpa since I last checked late this afternoon.
Saw some lightning to the NW - seems to be fairly infrequent. Just heard
some thunder.

We had a moderate ts with some close lightning and thunder at
Blackheath 1950 to 2000 -- 6mm in the storm. Motion difficult to
discern -- possibly from WNW13mm in the gauge now (2300) from rain
which has been almost continuous since 1600. No fog, so the cloudbase
must be reasonably high -- we usually get fog here even in a moist NW
stream.

To be honest I can't wait to get out of the place, it is no longer the
Wollongong I was born in, it has all the big city crime of Sydney, infact in
some regards such as armed bank holdups it is worse.

Thankfully the wind dropped here about 10.30pm, at 9pm it was around 40
knots with occasional stronger gusts.

Regards
Michael

None here in the storm by pass capital.

Did not expect otherwise.
