It's still light wind, from the N and some thickening cirrus. I can still see that cloud complex on the satpic. Is there any radar showing direction or intensity? At about midnight there was some very good lightning bolts to the north west but nothing really eventuated. We had a little rain before the southerly change pushed everything north. Jacob sent the updated weather bureau's warnings at 3.30 am which really summarised the situation. I looked up the 9am bulletin and haven't seen any reports of heavy rain. Better luck for those in the eastern states. On a slightly more positive note, it would appear the southerly change has pushed the moisture and humidity north but not completely away and in the middle of next week that moisture should track south with perhaps another chance of storms. A storm with brief moderate rain moved east from the northern Kanimbla Valley about 2.15, then rain ceased for about 10 mins, with very turbulent clouds overhead but clear skies in all directions. Rain resumed with sago-sized hail around 2.30, then stopped again, but with heavy Cb obvious to the west and northwest. Between 2.45 and 3.30 we had several very heavy showers (11mm in my gauge in north Blackheath to 4.30pm, Mt Boyce reported 8mm to 3pm, Katoomba, Lithgow, Oberon nil), and 1cm diameter hail for about 2 mins at 3.15pm. Thunder infrequent but continuing the whole time from 2.15 to about 3.45, at which time the system appeared to be moving away east, though propagating northwards as well. As I write now (4.40pm), another heavy shower is falling from a large Cu cell, though only 4 octas of the sky is covered. The 3pm reports are almost devoid of rainfall, with 8 at Mt Boyce and 17 at Mt Seaview, west of Port Macquarie, the only falls of substance. Widespread rain in western and central Victoria, with top 9 to 3 fall 12 at Wonthaggi (actually falling noon to 3pm). Most other reports 1 to 5mm, and about half the manual stations reporting thunder or past thunder. The main storm front hit my house (in north west Canberra - Higgins) at around 6.55pm EDT. The storm was part of an organised band moving roughly west to east at a moderate - fast pace. Individual cells were moving quite rapidly along the band from NW to SE with the gust front approaching from the SW. The main activity lasted just over 8 minutes. During that period I measured 6.5mm of rain, pea sized and slightly larger hail fell for about 2 minutes and winds were sustained at around 20-30 knots from the SW. The temperature dropped around 5 degrees from 23 to 18. Visibility at the peak of the storm fell to around 100 metres. Lightning and thunder was continuous for around 15min and the televesion tower at Black Mountain was intermittently "out" for that time (with several 1 min periods of no transmission and several longer periods of very obscured transmission). All in all, the best entertainment here for a considerable period (ie more than 8 weeks). Thunder was also also reported in the area around 4pm EDT from localised showers which developed ahead of the main line of storms. Hope those futher east are able to enjoy..
