Jimmy....
Don't know about the central Queensland patches today - but the week end
could be interesting. The WA trough will drift east and deepen and if
moisture feed from east is maintained, Sunday could be worth waiting for.

The bad news for Sydney-siders is that you'd better head W-NW some
hundreds of kilometers to clear the coastal cloud:-( Be up and
watching at 4:00 AEDT Wednesday morning.

Thought for the day.....

How many people have registered with BoM to use the radar service at full
price so far?? (anyone know?)

Maybe we could negotiate a cheaper registration for members of the ASSC if
we could guarantee the BoM a batch of say 50 users in one go?? $20 pcm? $25
pcm?

What do you think - is it worth considering and maybe running past BoM for
their thoughts (Laurier? Micheal? Jimmy?)

Looks like ill be watching the meteor shower in another 33 years..but
knowing my luck it will be overcast then as well.
NEW SOUTH WALES:
Cloudy periods with a few showers about the coast and adjacent ranges.
Isolated
thunderstorms and showers developing this afternoon and evening about the
western slopes and the southern ranges.
Fine with sunny days over the remaining inland areas.
Moderate south to southeast winds, freshening on the north coast and tending
east to northeast along the southern half of the coast this afternoon. Strong
southeast winds developing along the southern and central coasts Wednesday.

[Areas north and west of a line Wagga Wagga/Dubbo/Gunnadah will be the best
areas for viewing the meteor shower in the early hours of Wednesday morning.]

BOM suggests west of the blue mountains for sydney people.. wish this cloud
would blow away :(

I have (for a full year...groan), and from his mail Michael T must
have subscribed for some period. I can justify it as a business
expense, as I do some climatic data consultancy work, but $600 is too
steep for anyone with "just an interest" in the weather. In
conversations with Helen Pearce (in charge of public weather, and
hence registered user services, at the BoM) I gather there has been a
"good" uptake of radar services, mostly from farmers. But I don't know
what is meant by "good". I do know that when I first subscribed to
SILO data, about two months after it was launched, I got number 002,
and after letting it lapse and renewing about 6 months later I got
number 017.

I don't think they'll play with an arrangement where bulk, undefined
people can access the one account. I did have a conversation with
Helen Pearce about two weeks ago, however, where I asked whether there
was going to be some way that enthusiasts can get data/radar etc at a
lower rate, because they frankly can't afford to pay the present
rates. Her response (and she's been consistent in this for over a
year) is that transaction charging will allow anyone to get what they
want intermittently fairly cheaply. However transaction charging by
the day, which was to be a reality about now, has been put back to at
least Feb next year. In any event, I doubt it'll be cheaper. They're
looking at a range of $3 to $5 per day per service, so if you're keen
enough, you would quickly run up a bill more than the annual sub.

Building on Jane's thought, though, if a ASSC becomes a reality, I
can't see why it, as a corporate entity, couldn't subscribe and allow
membership access. The method of distribution would be the tricky one,
because, as I said above, I don't think the Bureau will play with
multiple access via a single id and password.

I'm currently struggling with the mechanics of getting my CMSS data
onto the net, and asked Helen Pearce what would be the arrangements
for any secondary distribution I might like to do. From the response,
I gathered that secondary distribution is the Big Problem of the
moment, but she intimated that I *might* be able to distribute CMSS
data in real time at no additional charge to me provided I (a) charged
for it and (b) could define who it was that was receiving it. BTW, the
full CMSS data + Telecom feed is costing me about $3000 p.a., and it
comes in a WMO format which has to be decoded before the stuff is
useful, so, again, it's not something terribly affordable or
accessible to the average enthusiast.

I'll be having further conversations with her once I'm technically
able to get the data onto the net automatically, and I'll raise the
radar issue with her then, too, if no one else does it beforehand.

I understand that Senator Hill himself, as Minister for the
Environment, etc., is to include the Bureau in his portfolio rather
than passing it to his Parliamentary Secretary, Mrs Sharman Stone.
Word is that he's expected to be briefed in this area "soon". I'll get
his email address and post it to the list. Some email activity might
help bring the briefing forward, and into sharper perspective!

At 5.00pm, there is quite active congestus development from the WSW
around to the ESE. At least one glaciated top with anvil can be seen
from my current location. Other cells are showing rapid (but not
explosive) development. Hopefully this is showing up on some radars...

Radar indicates a weak line of storms just east of Bathurst, and another
smaller storm near Goulburn - Bowral. Unfortunately an animated loop
indicates little movement towards the coast. A gradual east move by the
anvil rain, but the growth points are staying relatively still.

There are also some healthier storms NW of Tamworth.

The cells to the south of Canberra have accelerated in their development
over the last 30 min. A number now have overshooting tops and are
merging.

Individual cell movement is slowly east. It is hard from my current
location to get a good grip on direction of propogation.

We have some (pleasantly) surprising t'storm activity occurring right down
inland Eastern Qld - which extends into Mid North NSW. Check this sat pic:
http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/gmsd/gmsd.jpg
Also, check the lightning as usual: http://bastion.energex.com.au/strike/

Around here, cloudtops probably aren't passing 10km but at least its
something! Right now, it seems most of it has cleared to the south, but
dev't is still occurring from west to north.

I'm hoping that these storms will become severe, wiping the power out and
therefore giving us Brisbanites a clear view of the meteor storm!!

Radar at 5.40pm shows a *very* active cell just north of Lithgow
moving NE or ENE slowly. Quite a big area of 40>100mm, and spots of
>100mm/hr. Other possible storms near Katoomba and north of Bowral,
all in a line with the Lithgow one. Another area of cells in a
triangle between Tamworth, Armidale and about 100km west of Armidale,
and, (sorry Patrick) a relatively small cell (but growing) south of
Canberra.

You are probably correct Don but the activity is
happening in Eastern Australia as I write this. A
deep trough is always a welcome sign especially if
there is upper level divergence and an upper level low.

The earlier observed activity seems to have moved off to the east. The
activity in this area this evening is associated with a westward moving
easterly surge (a common direction for summer cold fronts that are retarded
by, and often too shallow to get across, the Dividing Range to our west).

The boudary of the surge is marked by low level stratus/scud at around
800-900m and a line of altocumulus above. It is out of the line altocumulus
that occasional cells are popping up and becoming independently self
supporting for a while as the line continues to moves west. Most storm
activity seems to be staying to the east so far.

At 7.15pm the surge is about to hit the Brindabella ranges to my west. It
will then interact with the remnants of the afternoons convection and it is
then that things either get interesting or fizzle. I have been watching some
of this interaction already. It has been particularly interesting to watch
some of the scud being sucked into what must be actively growing cells above
the altocumulus base.

Fingers crossed for an interesting evening - I don't expect anything too
severe though.

Hi everyone,
I have just noticed an interesting storm on the NASA animated
satellite imagery of eastern Australia. The storm shows up most
distinctly on the WV imagery (which gives you a picture to around 500Hpa)
but may also be seen on the IR imagery. If you have a careful look,
you'll see a storm somewhere in Central to Northern QLD which is moving
differently to the other storms. It seems to have more of a northerly
component to its movement compared to other activity and it also seems to
have split early in its life with the right half moving with a more
southerly component. This would seem to indicate that the storm was a
supercell. I have located it to being roughly 400Km SW of Townsville. Has
anyone got radar imagery of this storm?

Hi Laurier,

Just got your missive re radar etc.

I'm sorry, but having grown up "farmer" and "interested" I'm curious as
to two things:

[1] Just who do the Bureau want to MILK with paid radar, (and do you
think they'll do it?) and...
[2] Why do they think it would be more economical to keep sudden storms
a secret (until they issue a storm warning?)

Apologies...
You should have seen what I've deleted in this message!!!

Yours, (in agreement),
Kevin Phyland.

P.S. God yes, Give us the new dude's name!

Hi every1,

Not that anybody's going to see this before it happens, due to the state
of messaging (10.11 p.m. local), but in Wycheproof it's clear and cool.
I think it'll be ideal for viewing if we weren't so far south! I'll be
up at 4 a.m. local however, so I'll report back!

Good luck everywhere else,

Yours,
Kevin Phyland.

Hi all,
This is Ira here. Firstly hi to everyone. My apologies for not
being avalible for a while but ive had a few dramas. My computer packed
up and after visiting several places and 4 weeks later the problem was
indentifed. My hard disk had somehow been bumped and was put out of
alingement so to speak. Anyone whos had a viris and lost all their data
off their hard disk will know what ive been through in the last week
trying to setup my computer again. Good news is im back. My storm
chasing web page will be up and runniing again ASAP. I have heaps of new
stuff to go up so stay tuned. Winter here has been busy with several
tornadoes. Full reports will be on the way.
I got on the net tonight for the first time in about a month and found
only 831 emails waiting for me! I see the weather mail list is good and
i hope someone can fill me in on whats been going on. Well must go. I'm
looking forward to a good summer chase season and getting in touch with
you all again, Ira Fehlberg.

Hi every1,

I've finally got a web site where I can post some photos.
I've accessed myself it a few times (and they seem a bit big) but at
least until I figure out how to do "thumbnails" they'll have to do.
Until I figure it out however,
the first is a lightning shot (cc) at Briagolong (Vic) courtesy
George Boyd.
the second is my only shot of a rotating Cb, in Wycheproof (1991)
and the third is just a beaut front rolling in in 1988!

Yours, Kevin Phyland.
P.S. Thanx, (for ALL the crap) Michael Bath and David Hardy.

Michael and David,
Oops!! I meant to say, "Thanks for all the crap I put you through!"
Geez, it read really bad now.
Hot tip: Don't go out to a party before you start writing e-mail!
Sorry! Kevin.
