Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Howdy all!! Sorry missed Meeting again (was away with work yet again...............) Wow what a day I had yesterday!! We had a cyclone here between Newcastle & Mid North Coast. yep, a cold centred Cyclone or more commoningly known as an east Coast Low. It thrashed the coast, with rainfall figures between 60 - 110mm in 12 hrs. My own figure was 74.1mm between 9am & 3pm. Forster had 74mm, while I could not see Tarees fall. Maryville in Newcastle had 101mm from Midnight to 9am, Williamtown had 80mm from 9am til 3pm. IT was pouring!! But not only that, winds of between 80 - 100 km/h buffeted the coast, with a huge sea now punding the beaches. Hail, severe line winds, rotating bases were common as the huge storms swept in off the ocean. Now I know what a Tropical Cyclone feels like................... I had to drive to Newcastle in this torenntial rain, branches flying across the road, swollen creeks, man it was fab!!! So Laurier, theres some intersting figures for you!! We are now receiving heavy rain here today, with severe squalls and hail!! What some weather!! all in 2 days!! Did anybody see the video footage of the Tornadoe in South Africa?? man it was awesome!! great footage as well!! Good to hear that WA & QLD people are getting some weather at last! Howdy to Michael Fewings..and Ira & Jacob! Howdy to you all in QLD!! Howdy to Matt (x 2), Nick & Kevin! Whats happening around the place today guys?? Here in Wycheproof, it's about 19 C, with a light SE breeze. Increasing cirrus from WNW. The NOAA models says no chance of rain, but the Bureau is going for chance of thunderstorms Saturday arvo. Here's hoping the locals are on the ball. :) Yours, Kevin. > > > >Howdy all!! Sorry missed Meeting again (was away with work yet >again...............) > >Wow what a day I had yesterday!! I just heard Steve Symonds on the Radio (BOM Media guy) and he was warning about the approaching trough, and that it will bring severe storms, havy rain & damage to farmers crops! So heres hoping!! On Tuesday night, hailstorms wiped out many crops in areas that had been badly affected by the Winter flooding. Rob Webb from the severe weather section of the NSW BoM said that the largest hail was reported from Delungra near Inverell. Although most of us on this list love severe weather for it's beauty, the power and spectacle, we should spare a thought for those affected by it through loss of property and income. Our research into severe weather and into conditions that give rise to it must be acknowledged by forecasters. Mail by the group earlier in the week suggested severe storms in northern NSW and Southern Qld, yet forecasts gave no indication of severe weather until it was happening. I'm sure as more of us study and interpret severe weather events, we will be able to contribute better to the warning systems. The 3 from the 14th were quite interesting considering the strength of the t'storms/t'shrs. The first 2 show an interesting base feature and the 3rd a good example of mammatus. The one photo from the 18th is from the midday storms but the more photogenic storms of the day occurred later around 4pm. I'll have those photos soon. These current photos are in my November Thunderdays page at: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jourdey/storm/nov.html ------------------------------------------------------ James Chambers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 18:29:09 +1100 (EST) From: Paul Graham To: Aussie Weather Subject: Re: aussie-weather: Central Queensland Supercell? In case you missed out, I have put the animation online at: http://hardy.ocs.mq.edu.au/~m3052695/interesting.html If nothing else, it shows that WV imagery can be very useful in tracking storms. The BOM forecast for Wycheproof (NW Victoria) is for thunderstorms possibly on Saturday, yet the NOAA arl models are all saying just cloud, no precipitation. Is there some upper-level support for the BOM forecast? The cloud photos seem to indicate that the trough is moving west to east (and north of here). Is there moisture available for severe stuff here on the weekend? Yours in anticipation, Kevin Phyland.
