I just found out about this group (thanks Ira) and have been having a good read. I was not aware there was so many of you Aussie weather nuts out there. For those of you who don't know, I left Perth at the end of March to go working and travelling round Europe and have been having a grand time. Have been to England (obviously), Scotland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria, France (2 degrees C two weekends ago) amongst others (don't want to make you all jealous) and am planning an Austrian snowboarding trip over christmas (some people have the life!). It is great to see you all in contact with each other and getting a weather organisation happening. I attended a Torro Autumn meeting a couple of months back and had a good time meeting some of the weather nuts over here. The meeting was based on Storm Chasing: How to get into it, Costs to go to the USA, what to do, what no to do, etc. There was quite a few photos and footage brought along. One guy showed footage of high winds in a town with the Tornado Sirens going off. They are sooo loud! Anyway, Torro seem's to be quite organised and have been going for a lot of years. It may be a good idea to get some ideas off them on starting a weather organisation. Anyway, I miss the warm weather of Perth and spending time and chasing with my mate Ira (G'Day dude.) That seems to have been the intent of the second Slatyer report. At page 4: "The essential concepts underlying the cost recoverable group of Bureau services are that the users must be identifiable plus the intention that the charge should cover the direct costs associated with provision of the service (including appropriate directly associated overheads) but should not cover any part of the cost of provision of the basic infrastructure; the Basic System and the Basic Service." Of course, the government has yet to respond, and the Bureau yet to determine policies in regard to Slatyer's first report (March 1996) or second report (January 1997). Helen Pearce told me that over $1m had been spent to get the radar product this far. I understand that the whole corpus of Queensland law was put on the internet by the Qld govt a few months ago at a cost of $30,000, so I am rather skeptical. It may be time to do some FOI work on the Bureau's costing procedures! >>From what I have seen very little work has been done on the radar products >all year. > And what has been done is agricultural. -- Laurier Williams Australian Weather Links and News http://www.ozemail.com.au/~wbc/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 008 Date: Thu, 03 Dec 1998 14:50:44 +1030 From: Duane Van Schoonhoven [vanscho at ozemail.com.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (Win95; I) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aussie-weather: Inaugural Meeting of an Assoc. for people interested in Australian Severe Weather. I am fascinated by weather and especially intrigued by severe weather. My story, the non laconic version: : ) I've done some training in meteorology, no formal qualifications, but I do understand the fundamentals of meteorology and weather forecasting. My interest has even taken me as far as touring the BOM's facilities at Kent Town in Adelaide. I'm an American (Californian), soon to be an Aussie citizen. and have been in Australia for several years. Anne, my wife, and I have three children, two sons and a daughter. Presently, I live in Paracombe, South Australia, a very small community in the Adelaide Hills. It's too small to have a pub. : ( Nonetheless, it's a great place for weather watching! We live up on a ridge, so we are able to watch the weather come in over the hills. Very cool! I'm interested in 35 mm photography and would love to try photographing some of the wonderful (bad & good) weather we have here. So, I'll need some advice on taking weather photographs. (Hint) Is anyone on this list from Adelaide or SA? Anyone from California? I'll stay in touch.... Cheers, Duane Van Schoonhoven PS, I'm also seeking employment in Adelaide. I have training and experience in HF/VHF/UHF Communications, Signal Theory, Electronic Equipment Operations, and I have some aviation training. I hold an USA Commercial Pilot Certificate and an Australian Private Pilot Licence. I have some retail and customer service experience. Additionally, I have excellent computer skills. If you can assist me, please email me privately. Kevin Phyland wrote: > Haven't seen you on the list before. Welcome! The wind change was indeed the result of an approaching cold front, a cold front that had been predicted... If there existed a system that could monitor the change in wind direction and velocity over a particular area in real time, then this has the potential to save lives in circumstances such as these. A less reliable alternative is very up-to-date weather forecasts combined with timely-advice-to-the-field. I wonder whether people in Aussie-Weather have views or suggestions on such matters. I was rather hoping that something like portable dopplar radar or some other microwave system could be adapted to provide such a role.
