Hi all

I'm located at Thurgoona near Albury.
(A student in Melbourne alot of the time too!)

I am new to this list and new to weather observing. I am in the local SES
and have witnessed my fair share of good storms. The storm in this warning
looked very threatening to the NNW of Albury around 1800 but tended to move
in a more southerly direction and miss the main areas of population.
However, on the scanner there have been numerous call to water over roads
and trees down in the Yarawonga area and just recently the Beechworth area.

I was out this evening but at sunset I got a chance to view this storm,
stacks of lightning, about 1 strike per minute.

After I learn a bit more about storm formation and weather observation I
hope I can add something more worthwhile to the list.

Anyway, I'll sit back and watch and learn. It's a very interesting hobby.
I'm also into amateur radio so hopefully that may assist in a chase. Being
able to speak to others and get their observations.

Cheers

David Lalor

Hi all,

Well those storms to the west looked good at first (was up to 225 CG's
in 5mins at one stage!!!) But they slowed down, and probably got killed
by there own outflow. Probably another need for a good jetstream. My
obs at 8:53am was 27.3C, DP of 20C, 1011hPa and the winds were calm, but
since there is no wind, it's possible my temperature reading is a bit
out. I observed some Altocumulus Castellanus earlier on, so things are
looking fairly good!

Will keep you posted.

Hi Andrew,

I'll be in on it, if you're still going to have Friday off.

I'm pretty new to it though, so hopefully you don't mind.

Please let me know what your plans are.

Hi all,

First lightning showed up on Energex about 16minutes ago...some strikes
over Coolongatta way...Steve, if you're online or come online, can you
give us some info on what's happening down there? I can see what
appears to be a very fibrous anvil forming to my SW

Midday obs from the AP were 30C, 51% RH, DP of 19C, 1009hPa and falling,
winds from the NNE at 13km/h

I've now got some of the numbers from a very interesting few
days in Melbourne.

Max temperatures (24-hour)

Friday 41.9
Saturday	40.9 (after min of 26.6)
Sunday 17.5 (but daytime max Sunday was 16.1 - 17.5 occurred
		at 0845 Monday)

The Friday figure was the 2nd highest December max this century.

The Saturday min equals the December 24-hour record (although there
have been higher overnight mins).

The day-to-day change from Saturday to Sunday (23.4) is not a record
- this stands at 24.9 (39.5 to 14.6, 13-14 December 1924). I do not
know whether the 14.6 on that occasion was a genuine 24-hour maximum.

The daily mean (33.7) for Saturday is the 2nd highest on record for
December (highest this century) and the 5th highest on record for
any month - the record is 34.2, set on 15 December 1876 and 21 January
1997.

Western Queensland looks like it could be worth watching later
this week for high temperatures - all models have a substantial pool
of air with 584+ thicknesses. GASP brings a slightly modified version
of this over Victoria on Sunday (if this happens, which I'd consider
unlikely, 42 could well get another shake in Melbourne), but the
other models all keep the hot air well north.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see mid-upper 40s at Birdsville
late in the week.

(where in hell is Ebor??)

Looking great for activity now - 2 cells to the North with great precip
cascades & defined microbursts. Lightninng & thunder roaring above my head
now, Energex clearly shows the lightning up (im at the bottom of that map,
Just South of ballina!)

Talk later!

The Saturday max in Melbourne has been amended to 41.0. This generates
two other records:

- first instance of consecutive days of 41 or over since 17-19 January
1959

- first instance of consecutive days of 41 or over on record in December.

Hi all

I just got home in time to watch a magnificent storm approach from the
south. Actually, the green-brown gust front appeared to move in a NW
direction on an angle to the storm. We only got winds to around 50km/h with
blowing dust but the coastal suburbs would have got something major I'd say.
Just heard of large and prolonged hail in the Brisbane city area. We'll
hear more about that later. I think Anthony would have got a fantastic
storm and just hope he has power so he can talk about it.

More news soon.

Hi all,

Unfortunately I still have power! :-/

We didn't get any hail here, but the rain drops were HUGE, we got 7mm
all up, although the storm lasted for about 20mins, it appeared we had
two gusters. The first came through with strong winds (Force 6) and
gusty from all directions, the storm did appear to have rotation,
unfortunately, the main part of the cell was about 2km east of me, I'd
be interested to see if there was any hail east of me! It was generally
very dark blue, but a touch of green could be seen. Throughout this
period, it was just very spitty and thundery, with a few cracks. It
also had a shallow, but defined shelf. It then went calm for a few
minutes, before extremely heavy rain and winds around Force5/6 came
through again, that 7mm basically came down in 5mins, which is very
heavy!

My mum contacted me after the storm, she said one of the forman at a job
site at Catherdral Place (in the city/valley) rang her up and told her
they received tennis ball sized hail!!!

Hi,
For James and Anthony, who know Bris, I was near the P.A. Hospital at Buranda.
At about 3.40pm some one says "Oh, look. it's going to rain.". So I looked out
the window to the south, and what a beautiful sight. The lighting and contrast
was just superb. Some scud cloud forming up around the base, and the tell-tail
green precip. Only small to middling size hail, but very irregular shapes. Hail
didnt last too long. At that stage, I got yelled at for not paying attention to
the meeting and had to sit down again. Bummer.....

Cheers everybody, I'm off to the work xmas party to get trashed,

Rosco. :-)

I live 4 kilometres south west of Brisbane CBD and have a view of the
City itself. No hail here but I could hear the noise of the rain & hail
from this distance.

Radio reports hail in a path from the Gold Coast - Beenleigh - Redland
Bay - City - Toombul - Chermside and Redcliffe. (Plum sized)

Hi again...I just got this email from someone who watched the storm in the
city, and on looking back I saw the same sort of thing. I thought I was
under the Rain free base (RFB) to the west of the storms, but I had noticed
(and not told anyone) that I saw an area of low level rotation to the WNW.
Soon it started raining here and after a few new CGs to the NW now where the
rotation was, it completely filled in with rain/hail under what was the RFB.
That is where the golf/tennis ball hail was. It developed so quickly it was
hard to believe.
Anyway, here is part of an email I just received:

>I am a storm watcher who works in the city. today's storm I am sure had
some rotation. After watching it come up from the south on the energex site
a dark low
cloud enveloped the city. My view is to the north west and I am sure that
it was rotating clockwise - the side of the cloud I saw was heading towards
the south in comparison to the scud which were heading north?
Some scud or some lower , lighter cloud came in under the dark cloud and it
seems to be sucked up into the middle of the dark rotating cloud. I was
expecting a funnel to appear any minute. Then the hail started and the
clear view went. After fifteen minutes it was over and now is sunny with a
few CGs to the north.
Unfortunately, my view is very limited because
of the nature of the building.

Now lets see what the news shows.

I had a great time there in 1985, surfing with a few US mates. Must admit I
was not mad keen on Los Angeles, but I did like the strip of coast from LA
to SF, San Diego although having similar surf conditions to Australia is far
too dry for my liking.

I hate to jump into the East vs West bandwagon, but I went to Florida that
same trip and scored thunder almost every day and experienced the outer edge
of Hurricane Elena.

before.

Anthony

  Hi Everybody,
