Morning all. We had 2 storms here yesterday at Maclean (yep thats right
Andrew!) Good rain cascades, but noit much organisation. Lots of CG
lightning, but a low level SE wind brought in scud cloud that made pics
absolutely impossible. But at least we got some! Woke up this morning with
a clear blue sky, so heres hoping for some more!

Paul from the Maclean!

Now that things are starting to get moving, the Management Committee of
ASWA seek expressions of interest from people wishing to co-ordinate the
meetings, venues, recruitment etc, of ASWA in the following states /
Territories:

ACT
QLD
VICT.
W.A.
S.A.
N.T.
TAS.

What you will be required to do is chair the meetings, organise venues,
times etc of those State meetings, take minutes and report back to the
Management Committee of ASWA. Also you will have the added task of being on
the Management Committee of ASWA and will be welcome to attend any meetings
you can of that committee.

Next meeting is on the 9.1.1999 at a place to be notified by Jimmy degurara
(Prob Parramatta somewhere.) This will also include a chase if conditions
are right. All welcome to attend, the more the merrier!

Membership fees are $30 for ASWA which will include bimonthly newsletters,
radar access (once the webpage is up & running).

Any queries, please contact Paul Mossman on (02) 66452049 or email
Local_Court_Maclean at agd.nsw.gov.au

or reply to this list.

Regards, Paul Mossman
Secretary ASWA.

A belated thanks Michael. I'll let you all know how I go - next time.
I need to experiment with shutter-speed/exposure controls on my video
and see if I can capture night-time lightening without over-saturation
caused by automagic exposure controls winding up the gain to produce
"grey" rather than "black" nightime backgrounds.

Hi everyone

Looks like a 'potentially' quite interesting severe weather situation is
developing in eastern Australia thanks to a nice low which is forming
over far northwest NSW. Jimmy pointed out the favourable lifted index
last night at the AMOS 'storms' meeting. All the major atmospheric
stability indices seem to be in agreement on this one and it looks like
the Tamworth area (Nthn tablelands and northwest slopes/plains of NSW)
will, as usual, be the place to be [latest AVN for Sat is < -9 somewhere
there!] Friday and Saturday. Also in the latest AVN (todays), Sydney,
Brisbane + everywhere in between are also all well within the -3 contour
on Friday, so there should be plenty of opportunties to chase for those
of us on holidays. Unlike the conditions of earlier this week and late
last week, where we had everthing but a decent upper level jet, it seems
that the jetstream also appears to have gathered strength.

Dont want to speak too soon but my camcorder batteries are charging up so
hopefully we'll be in for a treat.

Cheers

David

Hi All,

Some storms are coming for Brisbane again - no warnings out, but it's gone
dark blue to my NW! These storms are moving SE....which is very rare! Most
of our storms come from the SSW, SW, WSW and W - not NW! We'll see what
happens...some erratic patterns on lightning tracker goes up and down.

Excellent lightning pics, I have never had much luck with lightning, what
are your tips in regard to how long an exposure, F stop, or do you just say
OK that's 2 or 3 bolts, next photo.

I too am hopeful for the weekend, but will be stuck to 150 -200km chases, as
my wife will need the car both mornings this weekend.

There was some junk Cu development late today which is a good sign for Sat -
Sun.

Hi Leigh,

Sorry to leave it so late to get back to you. I don't hav to work tomorrow
but I do have to go and help my mum move furniture at her school so I won't
be able to chase tomorrow. I guess all I can hope for is for something to
come this way.

If I didn't have to work earlier this week I would've liked a chase to the
NE cause you could see the development from the NE Suburbs - where I live
(Greensborough). It looked pretty good.

By the way I'm pretty new to chasing too - my only meterological work
experience is that I worked at the BOM in Year 10 for 2 weeks. I've been
chasing once with my sister during that really cold snap in late October.
It wasn't a real chase cause we only had an hour or so but we watched two
nice hail showers move out across the divide and also another one develop
over the dandenongs. We found this great lookout on the way to Yarra Glen.
I think if was an old fire tower or something but it gives excellent all
round views. Might have to meet there some time soon when we have some
spare time and when I find out exactly where it is and you are.

Feel free to email me about anything - possible chases, etc. I'm working
Monday and Tuesday next week so they are out and Thursday is also out.
Friday is christmas so that's probably out too unless they tell us we are
going to get severe thunderstorms.
