(Still going actually) Some quite loud, basically just fairly low cloud (can't see any structure) but they're only weak...some light rain. Mum rang me up 2mins ago to say they've had 2 'cracks' of thunder at work though! Brisbane has a long running history of "storm in the morning = severe storm later." All the models point to it, so do the soundings - so lets see what today brings us! (On the occasion of my one Christmas in North America, in 1989, I went to Winnipeg to make sure I got one, which was something of a case of overkill given that 1989 was the year when it dropped below 0 C at Christmas as far south as Miami). Normally Australia is immune from such speculation. I do notice, however, that the last day of the current ECMWF run (1200 UTC/2300 EST 24 December) has a tongue of cold air with sub-532 thicknesses reaching latitude 40 S just west of Tasmania. If this actually happens (and the seventh day of a prog is usually pretty speculative) we might expect to see snow showers on Christmas Day in the usual summer cold-outbreak snow zones (above 1000m in Tasmania, above 1600m in the Victorian highlands and 1800m in the Snowies). (For the record, North America looks like it's about to turn much colder after an extraordinarily warm few weeks - at present there is virtually no snow on the ground outside the Rockies anywhere in the US, and mean temps for December so far are running 8-9 C above normal in the Midwest. Europe is anyone's guess at this stage). Might be an outside chance of something in Brissie a bit later.. Have heard of hail at Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains and Caboolture from non severe storms. Judging by the lightning tracker, this storm that has the warning is actually moving ESE compared to the other north storms which seem to be moving NE. I still think severity is likely with those around the Sunshine Coast though. TOP PRIORITY SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING Issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane At 3.40 pm EST on Friday the 18th of December 1998 For the Southeast Coast District. A large thunderstorm has been observed on radar in the Beaudesert area and is moving east at 40 km/hr . This thunderstorm may produce severe wind squalls, heavy rain and some hail. This storm is expected to continue moving east to southeast and reach the Gold Coast region in the next 1 to 2 hours . Many other thunderstorms are developing in the district and further warnings will be issued for these storms if they become severe. People are advised to secure outside items, move cars under cover and seek shelter. The next warning will be issued at 4.30 pm. ------------------------------------------------------ James Chambers http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jamestorm/bristorm.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 017 From: "Jimmy Deguara" [jimmyd at ozemail.com.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aussie-weather: Storms Date: Fri, 18 Dec 1998 20:34:41 +1100 X-Msmail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.5 X-Mimeole: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Jimmy here, At the moment, there seems to be storms right across the top end. New Zealand has had a number of high country white christmases, recent ones being in 1989 (most of the snow actually fell on Christmas Eve), 1982, and 1975. The 1975 event was probably the most significant - most lowland areas having a psuedo white christmas with widespread hail (a common feature of cold outbreaks in summer). On Boxing Day 1975, there were even reports of light snow as low as 200 metres in southern Hawkes Bay (southeastern North Island) - in places that don't often get snow even in winter!. Back to the present, models show some cool air possibly approaching NZ for December 25 - maybe some white stuff on the southern mountains. Here, I had about 6 storms, all pretty much sideswiped me! All up, I've had about 3.5 to 4 hours of thunder (where thunder has been heard within 5minutes of the last rumble) But only 0.5mm of rain - all gave some spits and a fresh breeze though. Some severe thunderstorms did develop - the Sunshine Coast sustained some fallen trees and powerlines, with 10,000 homes blacked out - some minor roof damage to some houses as well. But not much coverage - most was on this dam 'desert fox!' Some storms still around Stanthorpe, but I'm beginning think that maybe it's too much to hope for a good storm unfortunately :( Although stranger things have happened! Anthony from Brisbane
