Hi Sam,

Where abouts in Texas are you?
Your best chances of internet storm chasing are definitely with the guys
from Brisbane to Sydney. (They get the sub-tropical jetstream dancing
all over their case for most of summer!)

Really decent road atlases of Australia can probably only be bought here
(normally auto club jobs, as I assume would be the same in the States).

The best I've seen have been from the RACV (Royal Automobile Club of
Victoria); the NRMA (a similar organisation in New South Wales); the
RACQ (...in Queensland) etc.

Geez, 20 F (that's about -8 C or something isn't it?) you must be in
north Texas?

Kevin from Wycheproof.

P.S. I LOVE your page! That Gene Moore is one lucky (read crazy)
sumbitch!!!

Hi all
See Kevin P spotted that low off Cairns - at the trailing edge of a trough
which passed over Proserpine Monday night - gave us two spectacular
lightning displays in two storms, and up to 100 mm rain around the district.

We're watching it locally, although BoM doesn't seem to think it will
develop at this stage. However, it is moving into warmer water, has
moisture, so who knows?

Current predictions for a good Christmas, weather wise, in Proserpine
(ie fine and mild). Hope you all get the sort of weather you want, and
have a Merry Christmas!

Bill Webb

A Merry Christmas to you all - hope you get the weather you want!!

Amazingly Melbourne looks like it might get rather interesting in the
afternoon / evening of Christmas Day so here's hoping. I'm trying for a
beachside vantage point to watch the change come through!

Off to Darwin early on the 27th via lunch in Canberra with the family, &
will be back in Melbourne late 3rd January. Trying to get hold of a Snappy
so that I can get video shots up on the web (this is of course assuming that
there are some storms to video up there :))

Good luck to your family (spoken in my best *BAD* Italian accent) and have
an absolutely wonderful Xmas.

Jane

Happy XMAS to all and please have a safe new year. I'm around for the
next day or so then it's the XMAS holiday season. I'll be going to
Bluey's Beach for the new year where I'll keep a watchful eye on the
weather then back at work on 4 Jan 1999.

Here is a XMAS song I made up sung to "Deck the Halls with bouts of
holly..."

Fill the skies with cumulonimbus,
Fala lala la la la la la,
It's the season of La Nina,
Fala lala la la la la la,
All our people crave a storm chase,
Fala lala la la la la la,
Shelter in an armoured car.
Fala lala la la la la la...

I think I'd better leave now:-)

Just want to wish everyone a great Christmas and New Year. Thanks for all
those who kept us storm starved Melbournians informed about all those big
storms in in other parts of Australia. Can you please send some this way,
our last Thunderday was October 23!!! Dane Newman.

Dane, there should be some action by around Christmas Day particularly to
the NE and N of Melbourne. We will see.

Hi every1,
As usually happens, just after I make the statement that storms are
unlikely in Victoria Xmas day, they update the LFTX prognoses to show
indices of -3 to -6 for most of the state from about 11 a.m. until 11
p.m.!
Maybe you'll get your wish, Dane. :))

Thanks for that advice Jimmy. There does seem to be some chance of breaking
our storm drought here in the next day or so. Isolated Storms are currently
over the eastern ranges of Victoria. These should develop again tomorrow
and could develop over the hill country to the N and NE of Melbourne.
Christmas will see a change develop and there is a possibilty of a storm
with the change. Dane

Hi Sam

I have a spare one, it is not the Rand McNally size, but a smaller one, but
quite detailed, send me your address and I will forward it ASAP.

It does have all the roads, but may not give a good feel for the topography,
which is much, much different.

A lot of the area that the east coast aussies chase in is quite hilly and
even mountainous, also much of the countryside, especially on the coast is
fully forested.

Michael

Kevin,

Thanks for the reply and information.

On Gene Moore, he is probably THE most successful chaser in the US! I call
him the "Phantom" because for decades now, other chasers have reported
multiple "Gene sightings" after most major events . Gene has a habit of
moving quickly from storm to storm to see several tornadoes in one day where
most chasers might see one or two (if they are lucky) during the same time
period. He is a relentless and tireless chaser. I believe that during his
chase "career" Gene has probably bagged more tornadoes than any other
chaser.

He and David Hoadley (David lives in Virginia) drive the longest non-stop
distances of any chasers that I know. One day Gene might be reported to
have been seen in Texas and the next day in Iowa and the next in Colorado!
David will drive from Virginia to Texas, Oklahoma or Kansas non-stop for a
weekend chase (he often leaves home on Fridays for a three day weekend) and
then back to Virginia by Monday in time to return to work! Unbelievable.
They must both live on caffeine.

I'm located in Garland, Texas, which is a suburb of Dallas (actually one
can't tell where Dallas ends and Garland starts). See
http://www.pulse.net/storm/k5kj.htm for a map.

This morning there is freezing rain, sleet and snow across Texas and the
southern US. A band of freezing precip runs from Texas, through Arkansas,
Louisiana and Mississippi into Tennessee and Alabama. Much of this precip is
falling as freezing rain which makes for some extremely dangerous driving
conditions. Take a look at:

http://www.intellicast.com/weather/usa/radar/

All of this nasty winter weather is courtesy of the sub-tropical jet combined
with a mid-lattitude upper level low approaching from the west and a large
dome of Arctic air at the surface.

Thanks for the info on road maps. I'll search the internet for a site where
I can purchase a copy.
