Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Howdy all (Paul from Taree for newcomers!) Please find below the minutes from the meeting. NOte that the next meeting will be on the 9.1.99, with Jimmy to advise us where...(howdy Jimmy!) We are all prob feeling frustration at the moment.......no storms for Middle to Top NSW and above. Boring!! But this is the time to do some studying & research. Investigate more where you think storms will develop. I am in Taree til the 3.1.99 and then back at Maclean till 16.1.99. Hopefully I will see a few more faces at the meeting on Saturday 9.1.99 (Please try your best to be there - it will be aimed at all levels of understanding & chasing abilities, and it the weather is right, even a great chase! Go the hailman Jimmy!) (See attached file: Storms.doc) The Doc is in word 6 format. Any probs please mail me and I will send a copy direct to you. Regards, Paul Mossman. PS If there is anything you need please contact me on (02) 65532028 (HOme) (02) 65525599 (Work) or 0418 662 753 (Mobile). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 004 Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 18:49:04 +1100 From: Ben Quinn [bodie at corplink.com.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (Win95; I) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aussie-weather: Database Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey, Ben from Brisbane here As some of you may already know, i'm in the process of building a weather education database on www.nemas.net (the link to it should be up by tomorrow morning hopefully, so bookmark it!! :) ).. some subjects i'd realy like to have heaps of information on is Forecasting Thunderstorms/severe weather (Eg. What to look for on the models in relation to moisture etc), And what variables to look at on sites like the AVN and MRF sites (Lifted Index's etc), and also how to read the different maps (eg. 850mb, 500mb) in the various models. I'm sure there are people on the list who have been following the models, and doing there own forecasts for a long time, and i would realy like to hear of the various things they've picked up along the way. Of course you would be credited on the page(s) for any information i recieve. I also think it would be a good opportunity for people on the list to learn more about these things. Also if there is anyone who is interested in becoming involded in the making of this database, i'd love to hear from you as it's become quite a daunting task :) Jimmy D: Would you be able to post the URL for the page before the URL's you were posting in a message earlier today (the AVN CAPE plots) ? as the url i have for AVN pretty much has the same variables as that site, except for the two CAPE ones, and i'd like to see the definitions .. if you get my drift. It looked good for storms in brisbane tomorrow yesterday LI wise, but today the LI's seem to have taken for the worst. It now looks like most of the action will be well inland, i wouldn't be surprised if we got nothing at all. But here's hoping .. I was very delighted to find out this was happening. If I can ask you two questions. Where do I send my membership details to. and Coud you please keep me informed of the next meeting. It is my view that too much damage is caused by these storms and that ius only due to the lack of warning. The data your ass. will post will help that problem slip away. Well Done Thanks ****************************************** Grant Boyden http://www.zeta.org.au/~boyden/storm http://www.2ky.com.au IRC = au.austnet.org and #2kyRacing port 6667 ICQ = 23511159 ****************************************** -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 006 From: "Michael Thompson" [michaelt at ozemail.com.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: Re: aussie-weather: Bushfire near Wollongong Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 10:38:50 +1100 X-Msmail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.1 X-Mimeole: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Yes, there was a total fire ban in place. Another factor which was against all chases on the 26th was the speed at which the storms were moving. I watched on radar near sunset and it went from Goulburn to crossing the coast near Ulladulla in 1 radar loop, about 50 mins I think. Your point about radar in the field is one that is crucial, without it you are at such a disadvantage say compared to USA chasers, who can by the way rely on more informative radio as well. Even when there is a severe storm warning out here, you are flat out ever hearing it on radio and never on TV. That's a fair distance to travel. Both of my chases have been within a half hour drive from my house (but I hope to extend this soon). This is for anyone in Victoria to answer - did anyone hear of, or see, or report any severe weather on Christmas day? I was unable to get on and check the bureau for warnings.
