Storms were developing all day, many of which were quite strong. I know Toowoomba had flash flooding. What was happening, was that storms were forming, reached a good intensity, but then sat stationary, or near stationary, which would mean they'd eventually exhaust their local fuel source, and eventually feed off their own, cooler and drier outflow thus killing and suffocating themselves. There was one line that appeared to take a multicellular and lasted for a couple of hours. This did move rather slowly, about 20km/h but appeared to be fairly strong (this was the line that caused flash floods in Toowoomba) Again, this prooves how vital the jetstream is - with our max jetstream sitting at a massive (NOT!) 30kts, but this was at a 16570m, the jet was near 20-25kts at around 10000m, and 16kts at 12000m! Of course, late last night, our max jet was 98kts....talk about bad timing! Late in the afternoon, thunder was audiable about once ever minute for 20-25mins, and in the evening, infrequent lightning (once every 30seconds) could be seen to my SW. Still more good potential days to come! Details are as follows: E-mail titled JOIN THE CREW/ for PENPALS - do not open If you receive an E-mail titled JOIN THE CREW/ for PENPALS, DO NOT OPEN IT!. It will erase EVERYTHING on your hard drive. Send this letter out to as many people as you can. This is a new virus and not many people know about it. This information was received this morning by IBM, please share it with anyone that might access the internet. PENPAL appears to be a freindly letter asking if you are interested in a penpal, but by the time you read the letter it is TOO LATE!! The Trojan Horse virus will already have infected the boot sector of your Hard Drive, destroying all the data present. It is a self replicating virus, once the message is read it will AUTOMATICALLY forward itself to anyone whose E-mail address is present in your box. This virus will destroy your hard drive and holds the potential to destroy the hard drive of anyone whose mail is in your box and whose mail is in their box and so on and so on. So delete any message titled PENPAL or JOIN THE CREW. This virus can do major damage to worldwide networks. >>> >>> > > > > THERE IS NO REMEDY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 011 X-Msmail-Priority: Normal To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: "Nandina Morris" [nandina at alphalink.com.au] Subject: Re: aussie-weather: Weather women Date: Mon, 11 Jan 99 11:23:21 PST Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by penman.es.mq.edu.au id MAA03270 Michael - I know I'm a bit slow, but does this mean that whenever a storm (apparently significant) fizzles out, or changes its mind - you have the reason already figured out? [snip] It ought to be mentioned that the mere action of "broadcasting" a virus alert creates a cascade and congestion effect in mail servers whereby undeliverable mail caused by people using old addresses fills up the queues on mail servers thereby stopping mail. In this list, 80-odd people is not too bad but when it hits an organisation like Telstra, it can stop mail altogether. The way Telstra deals with this is to appoint only one "SECURITY ALERT" authorised sender and to broadcast only when a valid risk has been confirmed. This one smells like an earlier hoax entitled "Win a holiday". I will therefore report any significant outcomes from Telstra's dealings with this new "virus" to the group. On another angle, it is women alone who have been attributed with the ability entitled "women's intuition" that, when applied to weather forecasting and storm chasing ought to result in improved success, other logistics considered insignificant by comparison:-) But, you are certainly ahead of your time... --- extract of previous Email headers --- >From: "Nandina Morris" >Subject: Re: aussie-weather: Weather women >Date: Mon, 11 Jan 99 11:23:21 PST >--- end extract--- ^^^^^^^^^^^^ (The time & date underlined by "^" converts to 19991201 06:23:21 +1100) It's rather sneaky to send mail time/date stamped into the future. Inland regions look to be a bit dry near the surface judging from the soundings and satellite pics but there seems to be enough low level moisture closer to the coast...Perhaps on the ranges there is a better chance - also a surface trough is due to move into the southern regions later this evening so this may help. -Paul G. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 018 Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 14:10:20 +1100 From: Michael Scollay [michael.scollay at telstra.com.au] Organization: Telstra Strategy & Research X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (X11; I; SunOS 5.5.1 sun4m) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aussie-weather: Weather women Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Nandina Morris wrote: > > Michael - I agree with you about the dead thread! > Ditto... However, it is much lower than last summer's continuous heat wave. Back to storms, the winds in the upper level are not only relatively light but from a SW - S direction. We need then to be W to NW. We also need turning of winds in the atmosphere and the increasing of winds with height - good wind shear. We have not got these right conditions since 13th November. It is very disappointing. There appears to be some development just west of Moruya, it would be embedded in the middle layer stuff, but on outside chance a squall line may develop into this evening ( my wishful thinking ). Visual check from Wollongong indicates to the far S/SW some congestus poking up into the middle layer clouds, despite the overcast it is 30-31C here, which if we get any lifting mechanism will trigger storms. We left rather late in the day so it had to be reasonably close. One option was to go Beaudesert way and hopefully catch something that might develop there, or go to our north-west around Kilcoy where a fair bit of action was and had already happened..... We chose the Kilcoy option. Anthony Cornelius was commandeered into updating us via mobile phone. With the help of Ben's navigation we arrived in fairly quick time. Anthony informed us at 4pm that a new cell was just starting to get some strength almost directly west of where we were. Just before entering Kilcoy, we took a detour along a road heading northwards, so as to put us ahead of the new cell. This caused us to go over a weir that already had about 3 inches of water going over it, so it had to be a quick chase or a long wait for the water to subside when heading back. Not far up the road, we found a good place to take some photos of the northern part of the cell. Unfortunately my parking could have been better, because (barefoot) Ben stood straight into wet cow shit. Shit as they say, happens :-) Another change in direction west brought us closer to the action where a small gust front was forming up. Ben guessed the wind at around 20knts max. We then decided to head back east a bit to see if the gust front would form up. Rain was falling but not very heavy where we were, although there were some very heavy rain shafts that we could see. A few small lowerings and a smallish shelf cloud developed as we headed back into Kilcoy. Luckily we managed to bypass the weir that scared us earlier. Heading east out of Kilcoy, we stopped for another photo opportunity. To get the best shot, we climbed through a barbed wire fence. Couple of snaps later, back to the car. Ben goes through the fence first, with me holding the wires apart, then he did the same for me..... and found out that with his bare feet, he made a rather good conducter for the electric fence wires we had failed to notice :-) As we headed east, back to the Bruce Highway, the cell, which was moving very slowly started to die out, and there was nothing else visible, so we headed home. All in all, it was an enjoyable first chase for me and great to meet up with Ben. Hopefully the photo's we took will come out OK. Our next chase will be Tuesday, with the latest AVN forecast predicting -10 LI's to the west of us. Expect another report shortly after :-) Cheers all, Rosco. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 026 X-Originating-Ip: [193.113.139.186] From: "John Roenfeldt" [wa_tornado at hotmail.com] To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aussie-weather: Orange Weather Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 01:26:19 PST Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com > >I am interested in how many overseas people we have watching what is going >on with the Aussie Weather. Looked pretty good before it got dark and now my sister is watching Felicity so I can't see anything. All those up in brissie please keep us informed as we got hardly anything from the front that moved through this morning. Dane - I may've counted the christmas day storms as a thunder day this year. I still think there's been two though. Saturday/Sunday may be OK down here but once again I am gong camping thursday so I'll probably miss all the action. I'm going out now but I'll be back later to check out what happens/happened. See ya. He was telling me about the base of the storm, which was rotating clockwise. In the centre of the rotation,he said there was an "eye"(his words not mine)where he could see blue sky. There was no rain at the time(it started to rain at 19:25) & there was dark clouds to the east of him heading in that direction & clear sky to the west.I then went out side to have a look(I was on my cordless phone)& there was a roll cloud heading towards me from the west but as it came closer it dissapated. At 19:31, Craig said the wind was picking up speed,& broke a couple of small branches off some trees. When the rain started, Craig said it very cold & very big drops falling. Unfortunatly Craig doen't have a rain gauge so he couldn't give me a reading (MAJOR BUMMER!!!!). >From my ob's here, it looks like the storm is heading out to sea around Byron Bay-Brunswick Heads area. Anyway, gotta go, See Ya's later John from Ballina P.S Can anyone give me an explanation about the "eye" that Craig was telling me????????? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 031 From: "John Graham" [gorzzz at one.net.au] To: "Aussie Weather" [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aussie-weather: Re:Storm at Dunoon Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 21:31:57 +1100 X-Msmail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.2106.4 X-Mimeole: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.2106.4 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Again, One thing I forgot to put in before..........Craig said the clouds were starting to slow down in rotation & the "eye" was filling up.
