I'm leaving Abbotsford (Melb) between 3 & 4pm today and driving straight up
the Hume (well, for as long as I can stay awake anyway!). Will be in
Canberra till Sunday lunchtime and then come back deviating at Seymour and
round through Yea.

If you want a *live* report of what's happening skywise (storms forecast for
NE Vic already), feel free to ring me and help keep me awake .

Thanks for the jets and sprites URL's people. If I can't see them for real
then the cyberspace version will have to do I guess.

If I could continue to be a pest....

I have, on occasions seen binaries posted on this list. I know that for a
lot of USENET groups this is a bandwidth no no. Is it considered okay to
do this here?

BTW. If I appear on IRC my nick will be 'rollcloud'

Cheers all...

Hello all,

Canberra looks good for some storm activity this afternoon. The early
overcast stratus layer has burnt off leaving a moist lower level and
mostly clear sky other than a good scattering of castellanus AND some
quite active congestus builiding up on the ranges westwards already.

I know the LI (according to AVN) is only going to be -2.5 in the area
this afternoon but the good old fashioned look out of the window and
"feel" of the atmosphere suggest some pretty good storms are on the way.

Current airport temp is 21.5 and DP of 15.6

Howdy all. I was just speaking with some customers from Iluka who said that
on the day of that storm, there was a funnel over the Plamers Island /
Yamba areas! They said it was like a rope, twisting around for some 15 mins
or so. And I missed it..damn!!

The talking with Andrew McDonald & Anthony Cornelius this morning, we
believe that there is indeed a hook echo (probably sprial) int he radar
images attached in Michael baths homepage. I would love to hear comment
from all regarding their thoughts. Certainly, this was a monster storm

Grant, when you enter the site at
http://sgi62.wwb.noaa.gov:8080/cgi-bin/disp_avn.sh, click on the
options box "include variable definitions and units", which is just
below the time selection buttons, and you'll get a different screen in
plain English (actually, pretty scientific English...)

Thanks for that info Paul !
Now we need to find someone who photographed it....

Which images in the radar sequence do you believe shows a hook echo?
Individual images and the loop are available here:
http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/storm_news/issue15/radar/

I still would like to see the rest of the higher resolution radar images
for the whole storm life cycle.

The radar images are recorded on your page, mainly the BOM ones we were

Hi every1

Some farely heavy discussion has come up between my self, Paul Mossmon,
Anthony, Matthew Piper and Kevin Phyland as to which server we should be
hosting the ASWA meetings on. We are looking for everyone on the list to
put in what they think so we can make a descision about this matter.

We have a choice of our current location and the new #weather on the
Austnet Australia server. We have found that since the Austnet channel
was created its popularity has soared to the point where there has been
close to 15-20 people in there at one time.

Can people get there responses in to this as soon as possible so we can
make a descision

I've been taking a look at the MRF's etc. finding no joy for severe
thunderstorm spotters & chasers but getting more and more concerned
for potential fire-storms as each day unfolds. Thickness and 850mb
temperature predictions confirm a persistent band of very hot air from
mid-WA right through SA & VIC to the extreme Sth Coast of NSW. Until
next Mon 18/1/1999 & Tues 19/1/1999 when a cold front pushes through
just a little. The strong NW winds ahead of this change will fan any
fires over a broad front between SA and VIC primarily. I hope this
forecast is wrong...

Most of the models back this up, except for the EC which brings the
change through a bit more quickly. I expect Melbourne to see 40,
perhaps somewhat higher, on Monday.

We're now starting to get far enough into January with consistently
high temperatures that a lot of records for highest mean monthly
temperatures must be under threat in SA and inland Victoria and
southern NSW, unless there is a substantial cooling once this system
is through.

Howdy all. Greg & I have cracked a hole into people who have uni accts etc
and cannot use IRC.

Follow the following steps:

1. Got to this homepage:

http://www.sux.com/`mark/irc/

Be patient it will take a little time to load. When it does you will have a
data entry point. It will ask for nickname, email addy etc. Enter these
details. Change the room tto #Weather (from #Viper).

Then hit connect.

It will then take you straight into #weather on Austnet. Very easy! The lag
is minimal, its a great looking window, and has plenty of cool sounds too!

Anyone with probs, ring me on (02) 66452049 or 0418662753 ok!

See you all at 9.30pm EST, 8.30pm QLD time, and 6.30pm WA time.

Paul.

In regard to fires, the Illawarra is getting bone dry, we have missed just
about every piece of weather since mid December, not that there was much in
that anyway. The models as you both mention keep the worse south of the
Illawarra, but it only takes one hot windy afternoon to wreak havoc.

After a wet August - September the fuel level is very high, lots of knee
high dry grass sitting on road verges waiting for ignorant smokers.

My brave forecast ( based on hope ) was not as far off as I thought for most
of the day, just in the last 30 mins or so a small shower from Cu has
developed just north of Wollongong, you would need a microscope to see it,
but it did highlight that a isolated thundery was not impossible,
unfortunately the SE wind change has just moved thru, so if one of the
scattered Cu junk piles does get more organised it will now be further north
of Wollongong.

Its now 10 mins later and radar has gone to yellow reflect on 3-4 Cu cells,
I'm off to get a closer look.

Went for a quick run up the pass from Wollongong, scattered fog everywhere,
not thick, but enough to hide the lightning which my AM radio was telling me
about. ( 9.30am ). The fog ruled out any visual contact ( or lightning
photos ).

Waited a while, lightning crackles on radio faded so I returned home.

( 11pm ) Drizzle has started and wind has increased. Wollongong misses
again. What a surprise.

Sorry I wasn't there for the start of the meeting tonight, I just got back
from Rottnest Island at 8:30pm Perth time (11:30pm EDT), so I missed the
start, good to see some people still there, my nickname is wizwx.
