The heatwave starts tomorrow with 36C expected, 40C on Wednesday, we may get some cooler air on Thursday from the south coast as a new high moves in, BoM are saying 34C, 37C for Friday and it looks like at this stage temps will be in the high 30s for both Saturday and Sunday. We still haven't had a 40C yet in Perth this summer, hottest so far being 39.7C on the 15th December. No sign of yesterdays storm over Mudgee way heading over this area. After I sent the mail yesterday there were a few lightning crackles on the radio, lasting about 10 minutes. At 9.10am in Orange, no cloud, 26C, 1012, 22%, N/NNW 5 knots. My reports might be a bit sporadic for a while but if anything worthwhile happens I will be on with a report quick smart. This is just to let you all know that Canberra was treated to an impressive l ight and sound show between 12.30am and 2.00am EDT this morning. Lots of close CG's in Higgins and short periods of 1 flash per second. So there will be lot's of tired people around today. I recorded 3.5 mm of rain from the storm. This afternoon/evening again could be interesting, I note that AVN is predicting a lifted index of -8 for this area at 8.00pm EDT. Low level moisture levels are also much higher than in the last few days. I found the list through the Australia Severe Weather page, a page which I frequently access to check out reports of storms and storm chases. About me: Im a 21 F from Brisbane, just finished a B Ap Sci (Maths) studying statistics and work for CSIRO in Trop Ag doing Statistical Analysis. Yet my real love is any extreme weather activity, so eventually Id like to do something regarding meteorology. At present I get excited by crackles in the radio while listening to 4KQ in my 1980 Mazda 323, keep my internet page at the Lightning Tracker so I can watch the storm develop and move, and reqularly check BoM for any storm forecast and warnings. So as you can see, my problem is that my knowledge is very limited and this is where you guys come in handy. For example, in the past week Ive learnt that a large negative lift index is a good indication for a potential severe storm (am I correct?). So if anyone knows any good courses, web pages, basically anything to increase my knowledge, please let me know. Hey I might be conducting my own storm chase by next Summer! Welcome to the list. As usual, I try to welcome as many newbies as possible. I won't introduce myself more than the fact I am 21 only 9 years ago (hehe), single storm chaser and absolutely fascinated by weather of a severe nature. My smile is proportional to the seveity of the weather. I am a mathematics teacher and enjoy dealing with a wide variety of students in high school at Bidwill High School. I also enjoy the holidays although these were not very productive... You will find more background information from the main home page of the Australian Severe Weather including a picture of Michael and I: I wasn't smiling that day and there was a storm far away... of course it was around 42C also. Finally, being knew to the list, you may be interested to know there is a weather association known as the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) which is a group formed from members mostly on this list. This society delas with all aspects of severe weather: study, research, storm chasing and so on. If you are interested in finding out more about this group, don't hesitate to ask questions to myself or any others on the list. My e-mail jimmyd at ozemail.com.au . Have a feeling that not much will happen until close to S wind change later this evening, there seems to be a double inversion on the coast today, we have our usual seabreeze inversion, shallow at approx 800m, but with a steep 5C temp difference. But as Patrick mentioned the congestus earlier today ( 2pm ) also flattened out with another more widespread inversion, this one has since been broken by the storms westwards. My hope is the approach of the front may wipe out the shallow coastal inversion allowing some growth overhead. Visual check and there appears to be a much larger storm to SW, with a ragged but more vigourous anvil, possibly south of Goulburn, but will be running into Shoalhaven river gorge area east of Tarago / Lake Bathurst / Lake George ( guessing of course ). There is another cell just westwards, but it is doing its usual edge of the escarpment trick, falling to bits at the sight of the coast. Visually this is my prognosis - What I think has happened is that a nice cell matured over Kangaroo Valley - Moss Vale area at same time the S moved through that area, it outflowed a lovely gust front which I got on video, this gust front brought the winds right back to the SW for a few minutes, the gust front stalled near Port Kembla / Wollongong, and the S front had to play catch up again. Looking grim as far as severe storms go, very high bases, thunder only every 10 mins or so, S front does not appear to be disturbing cloud base too much, therefore some general rain may develop in lieu of the much anticipated storms . It's always nice to see development of cumulonimbus with great contrast from the blue skies surrounding them. We waited and observed the conditions from Kemps Creek (outer SW suburbs). There was a line of activity stretching from west to south, but most development was near Bowral and Katoomba. It seems that the upper level winds failed to arrive again today resulting in the activity remaining in virtually the same location the rest of the afternoon. The anvils spread towards the SE but storm motion was very slow propagation towards the north-northeast. Storm tops didn't reach very high either. At about 3pm we decided to go after the Katoomba storm. But as we moved NW towards the mountains it was aparent this was not going to come off the hills. We saw some nice lightning, heard thunder and saw heavy rain areas, but there was little in the way of base features. The northern edge looked good for a while but then even that became featureless. We moved to another location around Mulgoa to see what was happening to the southern stuff but it looked weakish and was hardly any further north than 2 hours previous. So we headed home. Chase distance about 100km. The southerly buster arrived here at 8pm with 20-30knot gusts and showers in the vicinity (and some lightning). It's nice to get some cooler air after the horrible 39 C we got today. No supercells, but intercepted two fairly decent storms nonetheless. Full chase report will be passed onto Michael B or Jimmy. Target area was a rough triangle: Canberra-Braidwood-Michelago (between Canberra and Cooma) - this was based on the lifted index, and strength of the jet stream further south and consolidated by the bureau forecast. Although I'm back at work, I managed to find something to do in our labs head office in Canberra and this kepy me busy for about an hour. At about 2pm headed off. A glance around revealed plenty of half-hearted towers going up all over the place. We (Myself + My friend David: co-worker whose brick garage was demolished and house badly damaged by the 1991 supercell at Turramurra) went to the national library there to check out satpics (to see what I was missing out on in Sydney), model data and to see if any were any severe advices out. A storm had got going by this time over Canberra - it dropped a few nice CGs but was pretty high based. Had planned to meet Patrick in Canberra, but I thought I'd be fair and give him a chance to see a good storm so I got out! Headed off to Queanbeyan and from there took the road to Captains flat. As Michael T has said this is fantastic chase country. However it was good old decision time: Storm to the south and storm to the north. The south one looked to be really firing by this stage, the north one was high based - wouldn't have given it a second glance in a decent in Sydney season. But this is no ordinary season and I was desperate - also there was only about 20km of decent road left to Captains flat. I figured the storm was further than that so decided on the north option. This proved to be a fortunate move. The closer we got to this storm the better it looked. It was still high based but developed a few nice lowerings and boy was it active in the CG dept. Being on the south side of it, contrast was poor though. When we got into it, the rain was extremely heavy for a short period - flash flooding was observed in Bungendore itself (No hail Jimmy). Anyway from there all the way to Marulan, watched weak cells develop, put out a few Cgs then die. However driving along I noticed plenty of scud racing south overhead - making sure it wasn't due to us speeding north we pulled over. Sure enough a cell was getting its act together right behing us - it didn't want to do it on the flat open country between Goulburn and Tarago but decided to while we were on the freeway in the forested southern tablelands. Managed to get to Colo Vale and found nice hill with a good vies to the south. This storm made the day worthwhile, watched, photographed and videod a low updraft base develop, spectacular shelf cloud and scud aplenty. This storm took on that 'severe appearance' in the area west of Berrima. So much so that we decided to leave it alone with the gust front overhead. Took off north to Sydney and watched the storm follow us. It still looked ok just outside of Cambelltown but decided to call it a day. Well thats double my monthly storm quota (1 in Nov, 1 in Dec now 2 in January) so I'll have to wait until March. All in all a fun days chasing. David
