I said this morning that flash flooding may occur from these storms. I just
got back from a party ( now midnight ), the storm is very slow moving and is
mostly over the ocean ( boo.. hiss.. ), but the back end may be over land
south of Kiama in the Gerringong / Geroa area. The lightning at 10.30pm was
once every 1-2 secs, pretty instense, but again over the ocean.

Lightning shots are out as there is fast moving low cloud from the NE ,
another common occurence with storms off shore.

the dark...

PS> Also saw a VERY nice cell at midday-2pm over maybe Gosford? somwehere
north of the city, looked like your classic thunderstorm, very nice to see,
but still havent heard a rumble since 14 december :(

>From what I can see this one is also over the ocean, what seems to be
happening is showers from congestus are running parallel to coast, with the
occasional landfall in the southern Illawarra. But as these congestus obtain
storm height there is a weak shear to the SE, therefore the storms are
forming just offshore. Well that is my prognosis after watching the
lightning.

The one you can see may just touch this area ( Shellharbour ), it will be
interesting to see what sort of rain fell in Gerringong ? Geroa, not sure if
there are gauges in that area.

Jimmy,

With a card, people would be more inclined to keep it in their purse
or wallet. A pamphlet... who saves them?

All quiet in Adelaide. :(

Good point Duane. Cards are easier to keep. Perhaps we have details for
going on the net or details to contact for joining. This has to be
discussed both on the net and at meetings around the country.

Hi Don,

I bet your excited Don. The storms seem to be intensifying just north of
you and I bet you will get your usual 250+mm. What do you think?

Jimmy - did you notice intense cell near or just east of Berowra (.100
mm/hr) just beofre 8am.... hardly any movement in some of these -
general prop. to SW southwards. Note that Mascot had 23 mm between 7.45
and 8.05. At Frenchs Forest we had 35.2 mm 6-7 am this morning.

Hope this is useful.

Radar at present showing:
1. 20-40mm/hr just off the coast - probably around Bronte (decreasing)
2. 40-100 well off the coast E of Nowra (increasing)
3. 10-20 just S/SW of Blacktown & northern beaches
4. 2-10 areas S of the Gong and SW of Bowral

The cell E of Bronte has only just dropped in size, originally started
(yeah, Cronulla) then moved northwards to it's present position ???),
everything else seems to be moving from generally NW direction.

Met Dane Newman last night while we watched the video of the Melbourne storm
(may have the funnel that was on the news - have to get 2 pairs of glasses
to be able to see - I was on wide angle) and meeting Clyve Herbert at
lunchtime today!

Last night just after 1:30am a cell around 2-300 km off the coast put on a
midnight light display.

I sat there for one hour just watching the lightning zap around the sky.

Being dark it gave me a better veiw of each and every flash.

It was natures wonder at work, breathtaking.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here ..

What's going on down there in sydney guys?? the list is awfully quite
(could be my mail server again), considering what i just saw on the news
up here. Channel 10 had some footage of MAJOR local flooding, i nearly
fell out of my chair when i saw it .. I called channel them and they
said apparently it's a real mess down there in some suburbs, with
freeways cut (F3?) and up to 7 suburbs affected by local flooding.
These are pretty sketchy reports judging by the way he was talking, but
it sounds intense none the less. Can anyone expand on this ??

An isolated cell with thunder gave localised flash flooding in the Albion
Park area of southern Illawarra at around 10.30am. So localised was it that
in 1 kilometre I went from dry drainage canals to gutters and drains running
2-3 ft deep and fast. Some drains could not cope and were spewing out water.
Drove another 5 km to Jamberoo and the Minnamurra River was a pleasant clear
stream, drove another 10kms to Minnamurra River's entrance to ocean and its
chocolate brown.

Just 30 mins ago a small cell matured off the coast, looked great with a
squall starting to form, but within the 10 mins it took me to get there it
had fallen apart.

I am off to Bowral, I feel to get anything other than heavy rain from this
system you have to throw off some of the maritime influence, this may allow
the storms to get a bit higher and as the BOM warnings states hail is an
outside possibility.

Hi everyone

Me and Ben were discussing the floods in sydney when we both turned on the
news and saw footage of the floods , watch the news tonight and you will
see it, sydney airport was drenched with most of it under water (ankle deep
maybe more), and the F3 north of the city was cut and still is(2.15pm)
because of floods so they say on the news, also saw footage of water just
under a cars roof and a street under water...
yet here we got barely a drop, although we have had 38mm since midnight on
friday.

Major rain events in parts of Sydney caused by stationery storm cells.
The one that closed the F3 did so because sheets of water cascading off
30 metre cliffs that are formed where the expressway cuts through the
sandstome hills around Berowra were considered dangerous.
Berowra reported 210 mm of rain between 7.45 and 10 am - with 141 mm
falling in 75 minutes between 7.45 and 9 am.
Another storm cell formed just south of the city and moved slowly to the
airport. Sydney Obs Hill had only 6 mm but 3 kms to south there was >60
mm. Mascot had 60 and Randwick 74 with an unoffical report of 95 mm from
Alexandria.
Currently 2.45 pm - radar show semi-stationery storm cells off coast and
around SW suvs to Bowral and beyond. freezing level lowering - hail a
possibility later

Huh? Whats all this about Sydney storms?

Woke up this morning around 6am to the sound of a bit of rain on the roof
and then it went away to be a lovely warm sunny day with just a few light
puffy clouds floating past.

Read all these emails about suburbs awash - what happened? Im virtually in
the city and didnt hear or see any lightning thunder or hail or even a light
shower after early this morning.

Currently its a balmy summers night clear sky moons out no clouds no rain

I'm puzzled

Additionally for some reason I am unable to log into #weather - any probs
there?

The whole situation is very localised, for example you talk of a balmy
summers night with clear skies, but I can clearly see congestus lurking, and
have had 2-3 short heavy showers ( southern Illawarra ) since 6pm. The
storms responsible for this mornings efforts were slow moving, this meant
that 2-3kms seperately zero rain from 75mm ( 3ins ).

I drove westwards to Bowral around 2pm with the hope of getting some
activity, unfortunately even as far west as Marulan the sky was dominated by
maritime influenced congestus. Some of these did give heavy rain, I got very
heavy rain at Exeter near Bundanoon at around 4pm, possibly 75mm per hour
rate, but it was isolated.

The view west from Marulan showed that the congestus gave way to normal
drier Cu towards and beyond Goulburn, I scanned the western horizon for
anvils, but could not see anything, I thought if I could get away from the
coastal influence enough I may get a tower popping to the freezing level and
producing hail. No such luck.

We have 2-3 short heavy showers here since sunset, and even now there is
fresh congestus over the ocean, chances for a repeat of last nights
electrical and flash flood activity are small, but no impossible. I do think
that heavy coastal showers will develop towards dawn.

The word that best springs to mind is ' tropical ', very similar to Gold
Coast weather.

Thunderstorms are very localised events. Early this morning I noticed
some lightning but there wasn't much rain here in North Ryde. Didn't
even hear any thunder.

Just doing a bit of crystal ball gazing and pushing the models along
mentally, and I would say that next Saturday is looking good. A deepening
trough over Victoria should move into NSW. The upper level shows some
divergence, but could do with a bit more horse power, the stronger upper
winds being down in Victoria.

I think the situation should be reviewed say on Thursday and Friday night,
and if it still looks good we should perhaps organise a chase.

If warranted even an overnight stay on Saturday night.

Anyway don't take the models too seriously, I am projecting past 144 hours
and that far out the models tend to be a bit wild.
