On what I've seen so far the airport seems to be a little cooler (is it closer to the coast? - I don't know Taree at all). I'd imagine the radio station site will be closed eventually, but hopefully not until there is a good overlap of records. The Airport site is on an exposed site, near the river, so temps will be moderated there with a artificial "seabreeze" off the river. The radio station site is more in town , but located in a hollow. So neither will give true readings. Both sites are at least 5kms out of the main town area heading north towards Cundletown (a suburb north of Taree on the way to Port Macquarie. However the airport site has already shown the marked difference in the rainfall readings - so it will be interesting to see just what the difference is over a year - I suspect it may be 200mm +. By the way how much is an aws? The cell developed over the northern Brindabella - a bit to the south of Yass. As it continued to develop during the afternoon it joined with some other cells further south along the ranges and became very active from about 4pm. There were lots of CG's and CC's (close to 1 per second for nearly an hour). It was hard to get a good feel for the storm's direction. The upper winds were quite strong and created a very thick anvil which moved from WSW in a ENE direction. There were a number of active cells embedded in the system and they seemed to propogate from SE to the NW. The lower level winds were from the east and strengthened (a synoptic level development I think with the movement of the new high into Bass Strait) around 4pm. This occured just as several of the Cb cells were about to dump their load and resulted in a good convergence between outflow and the easterly surge. There were a number of base lowerings and large areas of sky had that severe inky blue/green colour that has been mostly absent this year. I was treated to a number of shelf clouds, some interesting gust front development and some very interesting areas of scud under the base lowerings (but no real rotation). Any areas under the storm would have received torrential precipitation with flash flooding a strong possibility. In the end the storm was fairly slow moving and did not reach my part of north west Canberra. We now (7pm) have a period of anvil rain from a coalescence of other cells. I am pleased I got close to this storm as I was quite envious of everyone else's action on the weekend. I just happened to be somewhere that should have also participated ....Mt Kosciuzcko. Alas I had good view of storms in all directions - at a distance - but nothing where I was. With the previous discussion of snow, I can also report that at the moment on mainland Australia there is currently 1 patch of snow approx 10m long and 5m wide near the base of Mt Kosciuzcko (as this was at around 2150m, I presume that there is currently no snow in Victoria with Mt Bogong from memory not quite getting to 2,000m). My choice for the ASWA logo is No 1. This advice has got my hopes up for Friday down here in Melbourne due to the fact that there was a similar advice given this time last week (maybe Wednesday) for the same area. The synoptic charts look fairly similar from memory as well but I haven't checked all the forecast models yet. Here's hoping :-)) There was nothing really to see earlier today after those thunder claps. As Blair mentioned there was 8/8 low cloud cover. It was slightly darker to the east but nothing worthwhile. The Bureau is now forecasting Friday only for storms around Melbourne so I'll see all you Vic ASWA members up at Mt Dandenong. Chris PS Anyone from Melbourne who feels like going on a chase into the ranges, maybe around Lake Eildon, on Thursday afternoon/evening e-mail me and we can maybe arrange something. Storms are forecast over a large area of the ranges that day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 027 Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 19:54:25 +0800 From: Michael Fewings [mike at strikeone.com.au] Organization: Strike One Lightning Photos X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en Mime-Version: 1.0 To: Aussie Weather [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aussie-weather: Mini Tornado Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Precedence: list Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-UIDL: f3384a141e52249f82ade57aa97af70c Hi all, I have just seen a news article on the channel 9 news, based in Perth, of a "mini tornado" in today that has to take the cake. What it actually was, would you believe, was a willie willie or dust devil! Can you possibly believe that, a mini tornado in blue skies!! I think something might need to be done regarding this. I like the logo in general, but not the scroll at the bottom. (Reminds you of School Badges) and think maybe we should steer clear from using the Australian Olympic/Sporting Colours. I believe too, there should be something other than just the tornado highlighted over the Australian map. (like add a lightning bolt, and/or the famous cyclone/TC trade mark - hey, is that trademark btw?) As for the rest - well, email is nandina at alphalink.com.au don't participate at other levels - IRC etc. Hope the Mt Dandenong sub-branch of the Vic branch is able to launch itself into whatever go-get-em activities appear appropriate at the time -whether that be sit down and chat for a bit, or fly helter skelter after the rain that will pelter, before the hailstones melta (?) :-) I really mean that I send you my best wishes for a successful venture and that the social aspect is a pleasurable one. I cannot join in this level of enterprise - several reasons,, the main ones being health and other commitments. That is why this list is so great for me. I am passionate about weather - but as one element of natural forces/phenomena that excite the" upper left forward quadrant of my soul" - sorry, just made that up. My artistic/spiritual being stands in awe and wonderment at nature - in all her forms, whether that be serene beauty or ugly devastation. One moment I will never forget was down at Brighton in the tower on the pier. We were finishing an overnight yacht race - together with choc. cake and red wine at 3a.m. (no wonder my body's stuffed) when we were treated to a display of the Southern Lights. Aurora Australis I think it's called. Even though the atmosphere was a bit misty, it was still one of the most moving phenomena I have experienced. So I guess you understand that chasing storms is not what I'm on about, rather obesrving (and learning) about weather in my time and at my pace. Good luck to the Mt Dandy set - hope to receive a full and colorful account of whatever transpires in what looks like becoming a regular event.
