Mass evacuations in cyclone's
                    wake
                    Fri, 12 Feb 1999
                    In far north Queensland, mass
                    evacuations are underway in the
                    wake of tropical cylcone Rona.

                    One-thousand people are being
                    moved from suburbs below the
Barron Falls just north of Cairns.

                    Heavy rains from tropical cyclone
                    Rona, which crossed the north
Queensland coast near Port Douglas late last night,
are posing a
serious threat to communities this morning.

The Barron River is expected to break its banks and
peak at 11
                    metres this morning.

                    Cairns Deputy Mayor Jeff Pezuuti
says there is not much emergency
services can do but to evacuate.

"When the Barron breaks its banks
I don't know much about what you
can do about sandbagging," he said.
"I think that if you're on low ground
you'll have to move out and go to
                    higher ground."

Last night tropical cyclone Rona with destructive
winds up to 180
kilometres battered far north Queensland towns and
communities.

It has now been graded as a rain depression, but the
weather
bureau is still issuing warnings between Cape
Tribulation and
Townsville in case the system reintensifies.

                    Tully

To the south of Cairns, floodwaters continue to rise
making roads
                    impassable.

The simple message from police is stay off the
roads, but it is a
                    message some refuse to hear.

Just after 4:00am AEST this morning, two people had
to have
their vehicle towed from floodwaters near Tully by
police already
                    flat out with the emergency.

In Tully, the worst is yet to come with the local
river expected to
peak later this morning, and flooding is also
reported from rivers
and streams all around the region.

Police say luckily the evacuation centres at Tully
remained
unused overnight, but with torrential rain
continuing, that could
                    change during the day.

                    Trapped

Meanwhile, two people are trapped in a dinghy at the
mouth of
the swollen Johnstone River, after their boat broke
anchor and
                    washed downstream early this morning.

Police are powerless to help until rain eases.

Police in Innisfail say the boat broke anchor
several hours ago, as
heavy rain and tide waters caused the river to rise.

It was washed into rocks at the mouth of the
Johnstone River,
and the two occupants are now stuck in a dinghy
between rocks
                    and the boat.

Police say the dinghy has no motor and if it tips
over the pair will
                    be washed out to sea.

Unfortunately it is still pouring rain and no
attempt can be made
to rescue them until later today.

                    Rescue

In news from south-east Queensland's continuing
flood crisis, two
men have been rescued from the flood swollen Mary
River in
Maryborough, while trying to cross a local bridge on
foot.

Senior Sergeant Paul Gurieff says both men were
swept off a
Granville Bridge about 1:30am AEST, when they
misjudged the
strength of floodwaters flowing across it.

"We received a number of telephone calls from the
public they
could hear yelling coming from the flooded part of
the river down
there at lower Kent Street," he said.

"One was hanging onto a telegraph pole and the other
one was
caught up in a barb wire fence."

Sergeant Gurieff says the State Emergency Service
was activated,
and the two men were rescued using a flood boat.

"They just totally misjudged the strength of the
current," he said.

Hi all

II've just heard via the radio that a house in the Williamstown area to the
west of the Melbourne CBD has been struck by lightning (000 caller) and that
smoke is issuing from the building. I have no further details at the moment
other than the structure fire at the location is under control. There may be
something in the news tonight.

Currently in Glen Iris light rain has begun to fall, but have not heard any
thunder at all today and am unable to get a good view due to the overcast
conditions.

Cheers
David L (now back in Melbourne for a while)

Hi All,

A blue sky in Orange.
At Orange at 11.10am 22C, 1017, 41%, NE 20-30 Knot.

Their starting to harvest the grapes in the Cowra region at the moment so
they don't want the rain at the moment. The Orange vineyards in another
three weeks then the apples. A good crop so far so most locals are praying
for no storms.

Morning All,

After being on the tug boat that towed the QE2 down the bay last night,
I've woken up this morning to hear thunder. I'm in the NE suburbs of
melbourne so i don't think too much will come of it, becasue the worst is
to the west, but it still goes down as my 8th thunderday for the year so
far. Melbourne's western suburbs seemed to have copped it again (for the
third time in three weeks) with heavy rain being reported from over there.

Tomorrow's Victorian ASWA meeting could be interesting with LI's ranging
from 0 to -4 all day. See all the Victorians bright and early tomorrow
morning.

Notable rainfall totals for the 24 hours to 0900 today:

Topaz 531mm
Greenhaven	474mm
Kuranda 420mm
Cardwell	369mm
Ravenshoe	354mm
Tully 340mm
Cairns 296mm

The Cairns total, somewhat to my surprise, appears to be a February
record for the airport (although the post office has had more).

Not surprisingly, the list of flood warnings in effect is a long one.

dear jane thanks for that radar image of rona it was fantastic, the eye
was not very well defined was it.
hard to believe it was a cat 3.
as i said to Manda it was,nt as bad as what we had anticipated, thank
goodness.
although having said that, it has been pouring rain all day and the wind
has picked up a bit as well.
i,m not sure where the remenents of rona are, but they say she may drift
in a south-easterly direction so we may be in for a lot more rain, we have
had reports of 400mm+ in some areas, not bad for 24hrs.

Hi Rob,

Precipitation radar does not do TC's justice, they're pathetic (well
ours are) for rain and TC situations. In reality there probably should
have been much more green/pink/red there. Would have been interesting
to get a doppler image on it though.

Hi Guys!,

I am new on this "aussie-weather forum"

I have been reading your transmissions for the last few days. Quite
entertaining and useful at the same time. I wish we would have the same
thing in Port Moresby and PNG (God knows we would need it... as well as
an efficient National Emergency Service in periods of natural
disaters). Mind you, in my country of origin, I am used to severe
weather of a different kind... (snowstorms and ice storms).

Anyway, to come back to TC Rona, Port Moresby did feel the effect of the
wind field associated with the storm for most of the day on Thursday.
However, in the evening,
things got worst as most of the city lost power due to high winds and
heavy rainfall.

I have been living in Port Moresby for the last 5 years. As far as I
can remember, this is the first time since TC Justin (a few years back)
that Port Moresby is affected by a cyclone. A good thing that this
situation is not too frequent. If we were on a collision course with
one of these "buggers" I do not think that many houses would be
standing afterwards.

Cheers!

Mario

Another danger size swell is running at present, a consistent 6-8ft from the
E/NE, with the odd bigger wave on the reefs to 10ft. It has claimed 2 lives
already, 2 fisherman drowned at Moruya River entrance when their boat
capsized whilst crossing the bar.

I say danger size as it is that size that is just not big enough for many to
recognise the danger. Most people can look at 12-15ft seas ( like last
week ) and see danger, but at 6-10ft many venture in and out.

The surf IS NOT from the Queensland cyclone, that was never ever in or even
near the NSW swell window, it is simply a combination of low pressure in the
Coral Sea and high pressure over NZ, squeezing out a long fetch of
easterlies across the Tasman, these looking at the models were a lot
stronger 1000 km out. It also means that the swell unlike a depression
sourced one, will hang around a couple of days yet. Good day for a trip on
Manly ferry.

It is tempting, if I leave now, I may even make Doncaster by 10am tomorrow
!! Say hello to Clyve for me if he is there, he will probably ring anyway.

Think I will try some of that car washing too. Tomorrow is the NSW ASWA
meeting, no doubt there will not be a thunderstorm within 500km of Sydney,
but we have videos to remind us what they look like.

Michael, try having a fence built as well as washing the car - that worked
really well for me

The meeting tomorrow has been brought forward to 9am due to the overwhelming
over-enthusiasm of members. 1 new member will be rushing (we hope) direct
from a ketch which is doing a night race around Port Phillip Bay tonight!!

Melbourne should be sitting in a -2 tomorrow at 11am & a -1 at 11pm!!!! (we
could have tie ourselves to chairs tomorrow morning ). If none of us
appears tomorrow afternoon / night - we'll all be having dinner somewhere in
the west of the state while on the quest for a Cb!!

Hi Dane,
Sorry that you have had major problems with your computer.
Hope things are OK now. The hot humid weather continued today with more
sunshine than yesterday. No rain in this area but some quite high individual
falls in the eastern districts yesterday and today. Quite a few towns had
40mm downpours while areas close by had nothing at all. In Adelaide it will
continue fine. Hot and humid weather will persist until Monday when a weak
southerly change will push the humidity away. Fine conditions should
continue for the whole of next week as well. I would like to do a study of
La Nina years and see just how many years Adelaide has done poorly.
Certainly in 1989 we did badly and unless the La Nina is very strong like
1974 I think this may be the trend. Certainly we have a very close link to
Sydney and Qld weather in that it is quite often the reverse here. When it
is wet there it is dry here and vice versa etc. Certainly while Sydney had a
wet winter and spring last year associated with east coast lows we had low
rainfall with poor frontal systems. This winter will be interesting. I would
not be surprised if we have a very long stable period ( dominated by high
pressure systems) in Autumn before the season breaks. This was certainly the
case in 1989.

Martin

PS Have you heard the Adelaide-Melbourne score yet? I heard it was 8 goals
to 4 in favour of Adelaide at 1/2 time but it is only a trial match!
