If all designs could be submitted by the 28th February it would be most appreciated as we wish to be able to have a vote on them after this date. The e-mail address to send them to is the following mjpiper at ozemail.com.au Also could the logos be attached as either JPEG or GIF files. Your cooperation in this matter would be most appreciated as a decision has to be made as to what our logo will be. HEADLINE: Severe Weather Association meeting in Victoria kick starts Melbourne's 1999 Wet Season MELBOURNE: Saturday 13th Februay 1999 The Inaugural ASWA meeting started at 9am after causing torrential rain in the city's eastern suburbs (36mm at Bayswater since 7pm Friday night) which flooded local roads and lifted concrete drain covers off!!, with coffee and photos (took us 2 hours to get to the rest of breakfast because we couldn't stop talking). Present were Clyve Herbert, Andrew McDonald, Dane Newman, Chris Gribben, Greg Browning, Rod Aikman (who really made an effort & came on motor bike from Bendigo in the pouring rain), Paul Yole (Murtoa) & me. Finally took ourselves to Dane's place for videos and lunch at 1.30pm - left at 6pm, came to my place for a quick check on the radar & the last people left at 6.30pm!!! Huge amount covered in meeting, great enthusiasm, there are some brilliant photographers in this part of the world - I'll do a complete set of notes in the next couple of days, but suffice it to say that it was an absolutely outstanding success. The next meeting will be 27th March, same time, same place!! Weather report - it's not raining!! - I've had 55mm in 36 hours. Back in the middle of December, my ISP was inadvertently banned for some reason (possibly effected by another ISP going through the same supplier) after 2 months of emailing www.noaa.gov about the problem, I have given up. Does anyone know any mirror sites? As the only other solution is get a new ISP which then I have to pay another connection fee, inform people of new email addresses, change computer settings etc. If you could help me, I would very much appreciate it! Good to see the latest meeting go well. Its great to see a variety of topics that are interwoven in ASWA being raised and discussed. Well done all who attended. I put my apology in as I had some urgent business that I had to attend to..... Great to hear you Vic.s going off as well!! Doing well! Now the next step is for a combined meeting very soon.....that would be great! Talk to you soon. (just going through my mail on Sunday night after the weekend in Sydney). Anyway after Saturday's ASWA meeting, my partner Margaret and I caught the Manly ferry. As the swells on Lake Burley Griffin don't really give me any practice in picking likely sea conditions, little did we realise the treat that lay ahead... For the 5 minutes or so of exposure to the ocean swells and which the ferry was running parallel with, we had a very interesting ride. Lots of oohs and ahhs, quite a few wet passengers near the front and a partner whose respect for my forecasts and assurances of 'no problems' has been somewhat diminished. The front beach at Manly was officially "closed" because of the waves. Needless to say I was bemused to see the numbers swimming regardless and can only feel sorry for those who have to then risk their own lives in the inevitable rescues. Great to meet everyone at the Sydney meeting on Saturday (and great to see the funnel cloud captured on video). The latest swell started on Thursday and is still running today, there is a big difference with this type of swell as opposed to a East Coast low swell, the later comes and goes on 2-3 days. This latest swell will depend on how long high pressure stays put over New Zealand. About 10-15 years ago a similar synotic suitation gave 14 days of 5-8ft waves. The address is: 14 Kinsella St, Belmont, Brisbane 4153 My phone number is (07) 3390 4812, so if you get lost and/or need directions, please don't hesitate to give me a call. If you would like directions in advance, please email me on cyclone at stealth.com.au I live very close to the Gateway Motorway, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find. Just remember, if anyone is from NE NSW, and would like to attend the QLD ASWA meeting, or if anyone will be in Brisbane on the 20th of Feb, they are more then welcome to attend! Please just email or phone me in advance, so I have an idea on who is coming. Just remember if you are coming from NE NSW, about the time difference, you will gain one hour when you enter QLD (so if you anticipate that it will take 3 hours to drive here from NE NSW, you will only have to leave at 8am, not 7am, as when you enter QLD you will have to wind your clock back 1hr) If you require accomodation, please email or phone me, and I will try and suggest some hotels, but I'm not very knowledgable with Brisbane hotes, so you'll have to forgive me if I seem a little unfamiliar. I've tried to organise the meeting so that 'out of towners' will only have to do a day trip, but certainly this may not be everyone's case. It showed the North Head in a trough....all you could see was the 2 funnels & the deckboy cleaning the compass on top of the wheelhouse. Now as the height from the top of a funnel to the water level was about 20-35ft, there must have been one hell of swell that day!!! Anyway, gotta go & do some stuff See Ya's John
