Help me solve a puzzle. I operate a quite old computer - that's ok - it matches me and my car. One day we'll all be classified by the NAational Trust and you'll have to pay to come and see us :-). But that's not my query. I am used to receiving emails from Truffles with this strange attachment my computer can'tunderstand, and I get a quirky little message from it saying it can't find a conversion and will treat it as binary data. With the exception of one mail this week, all Truffles' messages had this attachment. Now, on this morning's messasges I have the same attachment back on Truffles', but also on Jane's mail and Dane's (dpn). As well I have been unable to access the Logos Jane forwarded and other attachments from time to time. The only attachments I have success with are the 'standard' Word and Excel documents. It is located at Kurnell in the Southern suburbs. The AMOS meeting at the BoM last night was excellent - subject: Wollongong Flash Floods of August 1998 presented by Bruce Buckley. Why didn't any of you attend????? The weather update at the beginning of the meeting was fascinating, detailing the current situation using the mesolaps output. After the presentations, we viewed some of our 30th Jan 1999 chase footage, then Andrew Treloar showed Jimmy and I detailed radar imagery of the storms we were in near Gunnedah and Boggabri. We also saw the first images from Doppler, but there were no wind speed/direction images on the scans they had at that time. So after many years, the long awaited doppler is online for the Sydney area. Supercell verification will be much easier now. regards, Michael *==========================================================* Michael Bath Oakhurst, Sydney mbath at ozemail.com.au Australian Severe Weather http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/ *==========================================================* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 005 X-Sender: mbath at ozemail.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.1 Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 08:42:07 +1100 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Michael Bath [mbath at ozemail.com.au] Subject: aus-wx: rain last night 24-25 feb Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, Further to my previous mail, on the way home from the AMOS meeting (which was held at the BoM in Sydney city), torrential rain and some very close CGs occurred in the inner west. Near Ashfield a bolt struck just to our north (time: 10:30pm). Rapid development of the heavy rain was surprising, as it extended all the way out to Prospect (40km distance from the city). At my place at Oakhurst (a further 10km westwards) we didn't get any substantial rain until after midnight, but it sure opened up - about 50mm and strong gusty winds, particularly around 1.30am today. Most of the rain fell in a couple of hours. 65mm in the gauge this morning. He has his web site at: http://www.stormchase.com/ This sight is looking for links to other sights. We probably should try to get some Australian sites on there. I got the impression that Penny has no idea that such a system exists in Australia. As she broadcasts from the Melbourne studios maybe one of the Melbourne based members could chase this up. Penny unfortunately does not have a personal Email on the ABC page. At 10.45am 17C, 1014, 52%, E/ESE 20-30 Knots. I at the time was down at our house in Mollymook (2km Nth of Ulludulla) and also observed this storm but from the Southern Side of it. The weird thing about the day was there was constant thunder from 2pm to around midnight and always just North of where I was.(at 6pm I did venture up to the lookouts near Pigeon House Mountain but there was still too much low cloud to see. One thing I did notice was the intense rainfall on the Mountains. There was no rain on the coastal fringe but as soon as I got to the top it was pouring with the road underwater). Some waterspouts were seen of the coast (www.jd.scoastnet.com.au/spout.html) But it wasn't until around 7pm that the lightning show kicked in. From 7pm till 10pm there was constant sheet lightning to the N and NE and finally at 10pm to around Midnight Ulludulla was lit up by some very intense CG's just above and off the coast and Heavy rainfall. James Harris (I was also looking back at some previous emails from the 1st of January and noticed the figures that morning for St Ives were 70mm between 7:30am and Noon. I live in Nth St Ives and can tell you that the heaviest rain occurred in about an hour between 10am and 11am.The gutters couldn't handle it and there was water everywhere) >---Michael Thompsonwrote: >> >> Hi Don >> >> Check >> >> http://www.globalpresence.com.au/laketimes/ >> >> Michael -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 013 From: "Alan Deane" [adeane at ibm.net] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: Re: aus-wx: want to know Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 14:35:22 +1100 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.2106.4 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Nandina, What are the file names of the attachments. There have been 13 instances in 56 years of 7 or more 35+ days in succession. I'm also watching the record for most consecutive 30+ days. This has some way to go: the record is 31 (23 January-22 February 1988) and 20 will have been reached by Monday (i.e. the record would be broken on March 13 if they get that far). Oddly enough, this summer has also been notable for the absence of extreme heat so far: the airport's highest this summer of 40 is the 'lowest highest' for a summer since 1986/87. This could plausibly fall during the next few days, of course. (not for the faint-hearted ok!) Sure to open your eyes rals at truffles oh yeah.. we got some rain this arvo .. temps are quite pleasant atm. approx ?23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 022 Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 19:40:27 +1100 From: Keith Barnett [weather at ozemail.com.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: rain last night 24-25 feb Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com And just for the record..60.6 to 6am today at North Seven Hills, of which 48.0 fell in 4 hours, less if you count the brief fine breaks. That probably means rainfall up to 25mm/hr. Brief thunderstorms about 11pm mainly to the east, nothing directly overhead. The drought index is down to less than 10, so after more than 12 months zero approaches, (and out will come the lawnmower). Total rain this month 131mm. (Spare a thought for Berowra..117mm to 9am today....) The Bureau suggests another low will form near New Caledonia in a few days..so look out next week?? Could become interesting over the North-East Ranges over the next few days as the air flow tends more easterly. The upgraded computer has finally returned to its rightful place. Sorry to see that Kevin has to leave us but I've no doubt he'll be back soon. Some great photos have been posted over the last 10 days and it's good to see that Sydney got some action of some sort as well. It's been quiet here in Melbourne for a while although there have been some good cloud formations with the wind changes over the last week or so but only showers affected us :-( . There was static on the radio on Monday but I couldn't chase as the car died on me. It's now back as well so I hope there is some action soon.
