Hi Michael !

I have the 5.01 Z sat pic (gms-5) that clearly shows the line of storms on
the coast that you guys would have seen, if you want it
(you, Michael B or Jimmy)
just give us a buzz.

G'day Marty !

Nice to have you on the list ! ok basically the Hunter is a region just
north of Sydney where storms often occur,
Go here : http://www.kisser.net.au/kevans/weatherpic.html

and down the bottom click on the link displaying the "Map Of NSW District
Boundaries" and this will bring up a map and names of the divisions of NSW,
each state has its own areas like this, so on each states page look for the
same link to get a map of that state as well.
 Hope this helps!

Also you might want to email Anthony Cornelius to find out about ASWA
(Asutralian Severe Weather Association) and what it is all about as he is
the Queensland Representative.

Talk to you later!

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Hey Marty, welcome to the list

Long chases - on Jan 25 of this year, Rosco, Anthony and myself clocked
up about 700 k's, and something like 10 or 11 hours (correct me if i'm
wrong).. mind you it wasn't a bust chase, we caught up with a fantastic
storm (rotating) on the Darling downs WNW of Oakey (we have pictures on
the net, i'm sure Anthony will post the URL for you to look at).. and
just yesterday we drove all the way to Ballina in NE NSW, and nothing
but blue sky and distant storms that dissipated when we got within a
bulls roar of them :(

The BOM has these great District boundary maps on it's webpage:

QLD
http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/weather/qld/dist_map.shtml

NSW
http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/weather/nsw/dist_map.shtml

VIC
http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/weather/vic/dist_map.shtml

SA
http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/other/sadist.shtml

WA
http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/weather/wa/dist_map.shtml

NT
http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/weather/nt/dist_map.shtml

and cant forget Tassie
http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/weather/tas/dist_map.shtml

Just wondering, do we have any Tassie people on the list?

Thanks for your lovely welcome and warm thoughts.

Thanks to Ben for the BOM's district maps.

Thanks to Matt for his good intention! The link you gave me was great,
anyway!

I'd be keen to see them.

Hello Amy Louise

Hmmm - I remember 16. That was so long ago - quite possibly I may be the oldest
- or at least among the oldest - on the list, so from one young-at-heart fairly
near you (Mulgrave/Nth Dandenong) to another young at heart - g'day.

Now for everyone - I have a tiny tad of trivia for you.

I believe I know what's happening to those fizzer storms. Yep - saw it in action
just last week. 5yr old grand-daughter who started school this year now has been
exposed to pop culture. She has learnt words and movements for the Spice Girls
classic 'Stop Right Now'. OK -she gave us a wee concert. 10 minutes later, 2and
a half yr old bro climbed up on the nursery chair and provided a masterful
rendition - are you with me? Stole his sister's THUNDER. It's a plot by the 2yr
old monsters - they're all midget thunder stealers. Something MUST be done about
them. Huh?

OK - going now.

Cheers,

Nandina

I seem to recall some discussion a while back as to whether waterspouts
could move over land and become tornadoes. It seems that they definitely
can. Just found this tid bit of information in the pile of crap which
crosses my desk on a daily basis...

Extract from: "Autumnal funnel clouds over west Hampshire: A percussor to
wintertime tornadoes" by Nigel Paice of the Met Office, School of Army
Aviation, Middle Wallop, published in "Weather" Dec 1998 (Royal Met Society)

"... two fully developed tornadoes, estimated at F1-2 on the Fujita
scale..." "... Damage was limited due to the sparsely populated area,
despite the tornado's 5km excursion along the ground. This 20-50m wide
tornado, which began as a waterspout off Atherfield Point, was captured on
video for 90 seconds by a local resident..."

Oh, I should have read on a bit further.

"Conclusion

Usually forming as waterspouts, coastal tornadoes may develop during any
occasion of vigorous instability with an onshore flow. An increased
likelihood for these ferocious spinning winds to materialise comes with
higher than normal sea temperatures, providing an added source of heat and
moisture to the air as was the case during autumn 1997 and winter 1997/98."

One moved out of Backstairs Passage and down the main street of Penneshaw
(Kangaroo Island, SA) early last July. Did some damage, pulled up some
trees. If I remember the newspaper report correctly, a woman opened her
front door only to see a rotating 'wall of water' moving down the street!
Then I think her screen door was sucked off its hinges!

Thanks to Jane O'Neil and Anthony Cornelius for weather updates while we
were in the NW slopes yesterday. The spot we ended up at was a lookout at
Quirindi (previously visited during the Moree chase on 30/1/99). It's a
fantastic location with views over the Breeza Plains to the NW and W; N
and NE towards Tamworth; E and SE towards the Great Divide; and S and SW
towards Merriwa, Coolah and Coonabarabran. It's just a pity this location
is a solid 4 hours drive from NW Sydney. Anyone living close to this
location is in the perfect base location for some of the best chase country
in Australia: many flat open areas with few trees and the occasional hilly
area. It is also one of the hotspots for severe storm activity.

It's just a pity it did not fire yesterday. There must have been some very
erractic wind profiles through the atmosphere as Michael Thompson
indicated. Jimmy and I met up with MT at Scone around 1pm then we headed
for Quirindi. The fresh SW winds were bringing in a lot of altocumulus
obscuring the view to the NW but we cleared this as we crossed The Divide
near Murrurundi. We had glimpses of larger cells to the far NW but even
this soon became obscured by mid level crap from the south. A weakish cell
about 20km to our north gave us one rumble of thunder, and then a flash of
lightning a bit later. It produced quite a heavy area of rain, but there
were no base feautures and nothing to get excited about. The S winds soon
ripped it apart.

An amusing moment on the trip north was Jimmys desire to avoid some animals
on the road ahead. Tooting frantically at a bird and then later a kangaroo
ending up fairly pointless as they were both already dead and were unlikely
to comply ! The bird did seem to be intact at a distance, but the roo had
its arse in the air :)

Well I guess I would be remiss in my duties as a member of this list if I
didn't follow suit..so here we go,
My name is Craig and I also live in Brisbane and have done since I also
moved up from Canberra about 15 years ago.
I am fanatical about watching large storms develop and marveling and the
power that can be generated under the right conditions...I picked the suburb
we live in because it is in line with the path most storms take when
crossing south Brisbane (Wife not impressed :-o).
I am nowhere even close to understanding the techknuckle terms you guys use
but Anthony has been an enormous help with info and references so I can at
least keep up with whats going on.Have patience Anthony :-)
Any way thats about it from me so keep postin' and I'll try to keep
learnin'.
Cheers.......Craig

Hi all

I have been on the list for about a month now and just checked the list only
to find out that there are no details for me. So my details are as follows.
	Address:	Ngunnawal, ACT
	Home Phone:	02 6242 8548
	Work Phone:	02 6214 1885

I am 25 and a mother of two. I like to watch a good storm. I suppose it
goes back to when a large storm hit Canberra when I was a little tike and
my mother sitting with me and my brother in a closet until it passed. From
then on, I was the one sitting on the veranda (or in the woolshed) when a
storm came over.

I'm coming to this one a bit late - I was away over the weekend. There
was an impressive, if isolated, cell in the Maldon area about 1.45 on
Saturday afternoon. We caught the fringes of it where I was - numerous
lightning strikes within 2km, but no severe wind gusts and not much
rain, not over 1mm at a guess.

There was a very good view of this storm from the slopes of Mount
Tarrengower (for future reference - as the terrain to the north and
west of here is mostly flat, this would be a good spot for storm-
watchers and chasers in the region). I can't, however, blame being
distracted by the storm for my mediocre performance in the Australian
short-distance orienteering championships (in which I was running at
the time) - I'd already made the navigational mistake that put me
out of contention before seeing the storm :-(

Some pretty high temperatures in northern SA and the NT on Saturday,
most notably 44.6 at Marree. This isn't a record (the Marree March
record is 46.1, the SA state record 46.5), but still pretty high.
Most other northern SA stations reached 40.

Alice Springs (41) also got within striking distance of its March
record of 42.2.

The risk of very high temperatures starts to drop away substantially
from about this point onwards, except in the north and in WA. As an
example, Marree has reached 45 as late as March 11, but its latest
day over 40 is March 30.

The advice affects people in the following weather districts:

Northern Rivers near the coast north of Evans Head but south of Byron Bay,

Hello Everyone

Well I guess its my turn now to introduce myself to you all. I actually
joined the list a couple of weeks ago as well.

My name is James Harris and I currently live in St Ives (Northern Suburb of
Sydney). I've lived here since 1988 after moving from Adelaide. I am
currently 20 years old and work fulltime as a Corporate Travel Agent in Nth
Sydney. The building at Nth Sydney has great view across the ranges SW all
the way to the north.

Since we moved to Sydney, and on our first night had a Thunderstorm, I ve
always been fascinated by them. Its only in the last 2 - 3 years that I've
really had the time / transport to study and chase them properly. I also
don't know some of the technical stuff and figures but hopefully soon It
will be second nature to me. Its great knowing that there are others out
there that have the same interests in Severe Weather as I do.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting more involved and would love some
contact information for ASWA in Sydney.

Oh and some other info for me:

Home PH: 02 9943 6099
Work Email: jh at intravel.com.au

Hope thats enough info!

Firstly of all I would like to thank the Sydney weather controllers for the
good football weather they supplied for the grand opening of the stadium.
Trouble is , I forgot to ask for a win for Saints/Illawarra. Ho well!!

Thick fog and rain nearly all the way from Sydney to Lithgow on the XPT
train. Railway gutters were overflowing. West of Lithgow dry gutters and
conditions similar to Orange.

At Orange at 14.40 scattered cu about 50% cover no sign of rain 24C, 55%,
1025, NW 10-20 Knots.

Also, did you guys take the Putty Road back, or the F3. The F3 may seem
quicker but there was extremely light rain and people returning from their
central coast weekends were driving like maniacs, I got delayed by one of
the accidents for about 20 mins.

Michael,

Jimmy here. We were heading to the Putty but don't worry, Michael B and I
did see this development. With another day on our hands, we would have
nailed storms. The Bust is really not justified when you have mountain
ranges that take 1 to 2 hours oput of your travelling time.

By the way, to everyone else, I like the humour from Michael B. The things
we do to protect dead animals that look at you in the wrong way!!!!!

As part of the ASWA initiative, I am planning to start up a Sherrif's
report on funny -silly - unusual things that we do on the list and
especially chases. And yes they can be back dated. Even moths being wipered
(smudged) all over the window only to find the water container is empty and
blocking your view is included!!!!! So write them down for now. Anything
(descent) can be included.

This Sherrif's report is all in the line of Australian humour. If you take
offence.........oh well

For the pictures of another chase Ross, James and myself went on (Ben
decided study was more important, tisk tisk...big mistake!) this one was
800km and my pictures are here

Hi all,

We were this ---> <--- close to thunderstorms today in Brisbane, there
was a lot of good TCU and there was some good precipitating calvus at
4:50-5pm just to the W of my uni today (in the Brisbane CBD) it was
*almost* incus, but it didn't quite deserve the title.

Today's SE wind was a true "Storm Eradictor" today, if the surge of
S'lys had just held off for a little longer, we would have been in luck.

BTW - With the talk with the Rugby League, I say down with the NRL for
the grade 4 'wreckless tackle striking' charge on Ben Walker...but we're
QLD'ers, so we'll bounce back :-)

Great to see the Melbourne chasers have a page up !!! Clyve's been bragging
about his mesocyclone photos lately, so here is his opportunity to really
get us storm starved New South Wales chasers jealous, you can get him to
write an article as well as he seems to have a great sense of humour.

Blame Clyve Herbert for both of these

Driving up the top of the hill listening to a religious radio station (on
Tuesday - just before Clyve found himself under a mesocyclonic rotation) -
the saying for the day on the radio was "and God will be shown to you lifted
up upon a cloud"!!!!

And then there's the group standing in the paddock up at Storm King dam when
there was a (very) nearby cg- and Jimmy said - "right boys - you wait for
the sound this one is going to make..." - and the group then
heard............."mmmooooooooo" from the inquisitive cow over the fence!!

This is an all time classic, Clyve actually has it on video, there are some
things that happen in life that you will never live down.

Hi All,

Welcome to all the new comers to the list. Amy, I have a younger sister
who is 15 (not officially on the list but definitely into storms) so I'm
not sure if she classifies as the youngest or not.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------

I think one of these watery tornadoes may've hit Wonthaggi a few years
back.

I always thought that a waterspout moving over land became a landspout due
to the lack of rotation (as in a mesocyclone) but if there was a
mesocyclone while over water it isn't a waterspout but a tornado over
water.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------

Does anyone know anything about a waterspout off the coast near Lorne
(Vic.) in the early part of this century?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Storm prospects for parts of Vic on Wednesday.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dad reported a TS from Newstead (near Castlemaine in central vic) on
Saturday night.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------

My thunderday account is up to about 13 I think. I had four days in a row
last week from Sunday to Wednesday with 3 of those days I ended up chasing
a total of probably 800km. Reports from two of these will be finished soon
but no pics yet (i can't afford to get them done yet).

Andrew McDonald.
