The address is Unit 9/14 Argon St. Sumner Park PH: 3279 1700 (if you have trouble trying to get there on the day.) If you cannot make it (I have a list of all interested QLD/NE NSW ASWA patrons) please email myself on cyclone at stealth.com.au or phone me on (07) 3390 4812, or email James at jamestorm at ozemail.com.au In other words...if you don't get in contact with us, then we'll assume you're coming. It would really be good if everyone could come, as this meeting is fairly important in the organisational aspect of things in ASWA. Nice fall of rain last night from pre-frontal & frontal rain. Received 24.8mm from 4pm yesterday til 8pm last night. Winds were quite gusty at times reaching 50 - 60 km/h. Rain was heavy at times to, with a return rate of 0.6mm per min at 4pm for quite a few minutes. Interesting news this morning about TC Vance (NOW cat 1) was that at exmouth sea water made it 2.1km inland with the storm surge - and that was confirmed by the head of SES talking to the Today show. Not bad!! They are more concerned about Onslow at the moment as it is more low-lying and they think there could be major flooding. Bobby crosed the coast as a Cat5, Chloe crossed as a Cat3 and Annette crossed as a Cat4. I cant find any time where we had 2 Cat5's making landfall in the one season. From what was billed on the 7 weather news as a vigorous cold front and even looked good on the sat pics, what do we get... Nuffin. Saw the lightning to the south early evening but from Mt. Crosby this was hidden behind an alto sheet, later it appeared to move somewhere along and behind the range, by 11:00pm the main lightning source appeared to be in the NW say approx the Esk direction. No thunder, only brief drip or two and not enough to record. Change is well established this morning S/SE with light overcast and very light showers, temp mid 20's. Can't believe the folks in Orange have less than 5C already, the lowest min I recorded all last winter at Mt. Crosby was 7C, but then this is Queensland. jrw -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 014 X-Sender: jacob at iinet.net.au X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.1 (32) Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 12:16:35 +0800 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Jacob [jacob at iinet.net.au] Subject: aus-wx: Admin - Important Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, As Ira pointed out earlier, we've been getting a lot of messages which are not weather releated lately, please try to avoid this, if you feel you must reply which isnt weather releated, then email the person privatley. A few other points: - subjects must relate to weather - try to make sure the subject on the email is relevant to the message or reply, this makes it easier for us to sort out our emails. - snip previous messages embedded in any replies, this makes the email a lot shorter and easier to download - try not to use 'thanks mate' type replies - this has been a problem recently - don't send any thing as attachments, because most large attachments will bounce and will not get through, plus it makes downloads longer to the ones that do get through, which can be annoying to people who are not on flat rate accounts. Also, a reminder that a lot of us now come on IRC to chat live on austnet #weather, the channel is open 24 hours, and there is usually at least some people there during the day, plus we sill have our weekly meeting where most people attend on Wednesday nights at 9pm EDT. You can download mirc at http://www.mirc.co.uk/ just use an austnet server, and join #weather. Thanks. Most of the damage came from CG's striking trees, and trees falling on powerlines and houses. But there were some pergola's and awnings on some houses that were ripped off from the winds. This brings up an interesting point (thought for the day perhaps?) ...should their be warnings issued for t'storms with lots of lightning (CG's) as they can do some damage if they hit trees... Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 23:19:51 PST Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey Everyone and Happy Meteorological Day!! At Saturdays Meeting we discussed the idea about making a register or database of all the storm viewing or vantage points all of us chasers use. I'm sure many of you have experienced chasing in unfamilar territory and the utter frustration not being able to gain access to a good view point to watch a storm. This is where this database would come in. I will be compiling it which will take some time, but I am aiming to have feedback from most of those out there. Of course this won't work if I don't get a good feedback from everyone from all regions. Talking on the #weather channel the suggestion was to make it A5 in size so it could be transported on a chase, but if the need arises (or if people want it) i can make a webpage with infomation. (Note: These are drafts, any suggestions would be much appreciated) The information will be processed as such: Name:-e.g. Rooty Hill Position:-e.g town, road, then Street Directory ref and/or Map ref (NRMA, RSCV,etc) View:-e.g West to Sth East,unobstructed/Nth West to Sth East Notes:-e.g a -description of the venue, -if there is any shelter, -conditions of roads (4wd/dirt/sealed) -any info that is needed e.g in a National Park that closes at 6pm -how far out of the way the lookout is and if you have to travel thru 10 minutes of dense forest to get there These are only thoughts that I have come up with so anything I have forgotten (and I'm sure there is) please inform me. In addition to this I thought it would be good to add Libraries to this database, so if you need the lastest satellite picutre you can go to a local library and get one as long as it has the facilities. The information would be displayed like: Ward Library UWS Nepean Great Western Hwy, Nth Werrington Campus (maybe a map adjoining) Mon-Fri 7am-9pm Sat-Sun 9-5pm 25 terminals available Anyway this email is getting too long now. If the feedback is enough there will be a ASWA member in all states who can continue to deal with this, if they want (or if the workload comes to great) This can be a great tool if everyone co-operates. If you can make the QLD ASWA meeting this Saturday at 10am (27th of March) at Unit 9/14 Argon St. Sumner Park, can you please ring me on (07) 3390 4812 or email myself on cyclone at stealth.com.au or James on jamestorm at ozemail.com.au It also helps with 'catering' (there'll be tea + coffee facilities available, and I'll bring some cake/biscuits and maybe other things, depending on how many people come) I've been informed that there's a tavern across the road, so people may want to have lunch there after the meeting (I won't be supplying lunch to everyone this time...I'm a little broke at the moment unfortunately!) I was standing on Mt Coot-tha during this storm, which was mostly sheet lightning to me. It certainly looked from my location that it was right over you. So when do we get to see your pics? I took a few but, as I said, it was all sheet lightning. ANTHONY: I saw a couple (of people) in the rotunda on Mt Coot-tha, both with quite new-looking cameras and expensive sturdy tripods, and promptly asked them what they thought of the lightning situation and what they thought might happen. I was quick to ask whether the guy was YOU - as I thought you might be up there! Do you have a better vantage point where you are? Or was it just not worth it for you, being mainly sheet lightning? It was very interesting to talk to them nonetheless - fellow storm-chasers, who, unfortunately are not connected to the internet. (I was also quick to inform them of this wonderful list!) Cheers! Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 20:18:58 +0800 X-Mailer: Microsoft Internet Mail 4.70.1161 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com I thought for fun that I'd run a footy tipping comp for any weather people ( or anyone else ) who love footy as much as me!! I encourage all to join as it will be heaps of fun through the year ( we can all brag on irc) and I have some great prizes!! These are courtesy of my friend Tom Grazulis at The Tornado Project online. I will set up a Html page with the scores each week and my picks will be on there each week so everyone can see them. This is the first and only time that I will post this letter as I've be going on about irrelevent mail on the list, I think you'll agree that this is an exception. So here's the low down, and rules 1) Your picks must be recieved by me, by email no later than on friday 5:00pm est. A copy of the fixtures for each week can be seen at the AFL site at http://www.afl.com.au/matches/default_0.htm 2) The picks must be sent to my personal email, jra at upnaway.com DO NOT SEND THEM TO THE WEATHER MAILING LIST!!. send them to me 3) If your picks are late or not in at all you will get all the away teams for that round. 4) When you send your picks send the names of the teams you think will win only. 5) You may pick a team to win, lose, draw. 6) Scoring will be 1 point for a win, 0 for a loss and 10 if you correctley pick a draw. 7) To it make it fun the competition will consist of a few samller comps too. Each week you must also pick your "sure thing game" this is the game that you think you know the result of for sure. It can be any game you like. If you get it right then your still "in" if you get your sure thing game wrong then your out of it, last man standing wins! There will be a prize of a blown up picture of the spectacular Northam tornado! 8) You must also pick your "top eight" in the order that you think they will finish. These dont have to be in till the end of round 5. 9) The winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the 22 round home and away season. 10) Prizes: Each seperate comp, "sure thing", "top eight", plus the total winner will recieve their choice of any of the amazing poster's seen at the Tornado Project Online site, have a peek at em at, http://www.tornadoproject.com/products/postpage.htm#top If I happen to win any of the comps second place will get the prize! 11) So when you send your picks to me you must send the the name of the eight teams that you hink will win, plus, your sure thing game. A typical email should look like this West Coast Fremantle Hawks Sydney Crows Nth Melb Port Adel Richmond sure thing game, West Coast to beat Collingwood. 12) So thats it! The AFL starts this week so you must have your picks in by Friday this week, dont miss out as there is NO COST and some great prizes up for grabs!! White lightning strikes form when there is not much moisture, but coloured lightning strikes form when there are different values of moisture in the air...can anyone else provide more information? (Well parts of it) I've got a horrible view to my south here, I wanted to go to a better advantage point but I don't have a car/license yet, and I tried talking (which ended up into arguing...) with my parents to take me, but to no avail! I was dying to get out there, there were a lot of crawlers and CG's (you can tell by the type of sheet lightning...) and I bet if you went further south, you would have gotten a great lightning display! (ie, not as much sheet, but more crawlers and CG's) Ok, here's the part that is of interest to everyone...I think it's great that there are many other active weather lovers out there! I think it's terrific, awesome, fantastic...(ok settle Anthony..) this really means that ASWA will have great potential amongst all. I'm sure many people without net access will enjoy going to meetings, and looking at each other's pics, video footage etc. Secondly, I know I handed out some little paper cards to the members who attended the last QLD meeting, I'll be bringing them again and distributing them to new members who haven't yet been to a meeting (I really do hope everyone makes an effort to come). Basically, what it is, is if you're in a position analagous to Marti's, and you meet with some people who do not know about ASWA, to give them a quick summary on what ASWA is, and hand them one of the paper cards with my contact details on them. Alternatively, if you haven't received the cards yet, I'd suggest you carry your state co-ordinator's phone number with you, and just give it out to anyone who shows an interest in weather (but check this up with your state co-ordinator first, they may not want their phone number distributed like that) however for any QLD'ers reading this, please hand out my details to anyone who is interested in ASWA! While it is not credited, I think this photo is actually a shot of the Brisbane hail storm (Jan 85 I think...) approaching, which at it's peak delivered 50mm rain in 10 minutes, to say nothing of cricket ball sized hail coming in at a 30 deg angle to the horizontal. A hail stone from this storm actually managed to puncture the metal cladding surrounding my Solahart hot water system.
