The biggest wave size i've surfed in, (bodyboarding), was 12 feet faces
at the Golf Course, at Ulladulla, (groundswell). Similar size inside
Cronulla Point, they were absolutely huge there! Got consussion that day
after pulling into a close-out barrel the size of a house. The sand was
like concrete. Violent weather and violent seas make for a exciting mix.
I miss those days but my back and ears and ribs don't - read lots of
injuries here :-)

ThAnks Keith,

Interesting stuff on Lenticular waves :-)

I'll read it this arvo more carefully when I get back from tennis.

Lindsay.

Currently 10 degrees at Blackheath at 8:30am on Sunday 28th. Change has
blown in, not much rain, 2.5mm to 24 hrs.

> Hi all, A pool of cold air moving across Melbourne this morning. Frequent heavy showers with some small hail and thunder. 51.4mm to 9am here in Kilsyth. Scoresby had 53mm. Most other suburbs have had less than 30mm. Melbourne city recorded only 6mm to 9am and Melbourne Airport had just 2mm. Loud crack of Thunder around 7am and another not so loud around 8am. Good hail shower 8.10 to 8.20am but only small(0.5cm) hail. Not much rain since 9am only a couple of light showers. Currently 10.35am temp 11.8c, sunny, at 8.20am it was 6.9c. Dane
Quite an impressive cold outbreak, this one (for late March anyway).
I observed (i.e. was hit by!) small hail in the Mount Clear area
(75km S of Canberra, elevation ~1200m) about 12.15 yesterday - it's
not often the Canberra region experiences hail in cold outbreak
situations (as opposed to thunderstorms) so it came as quite a
surprise. Canberra itself was hovering in the 10-12 degree range for
much of the day, although it did get to a max of 17, not sure when
(probably fairly early before the showers started, I expect).
Canberra's March record low max is a surprisingly high 12.4, so it's
a pity the showers didn't fire up a bit earlier :-)

In marked contrast, Saturday's minimum of 18 was close to a late-
season record for Canberra - only beaten by 30 March 1968 (19.6) and
possibly 5 April 1986 (18.0).

Enjoy the excitement while it lasts - the next 7-8 days look
exceedingly boring in SE Australia, apart from a weakish front on
Tuesday night which could bring some highland snow to Tasmania.
Could be some low mins tonight as well - if everything goes right
some March records could come under pressure, although the air mass
may have warmed up too much by then. The cool air has pushed a long
way north (Alice Springs is only expecting 23 today under clear skies,
a marked contrast with the persistent near-record highs in the high 30s
that they've experienced through much of the month), so I'd say we've
seen the last of the hot weather in Melbourne - I'd be surprised if
we see 30 again this autumn.

Hi everyone,

Jimmy here.

There is a weatherwatch meeting this wednesday the 31st March, at Macquarie
University room E5A 143 (in the E5A block). Please note you must remember
to bring exactly $4 in coins to put in the machines in the car parks.
People have been booked in the past even at night.

The weatherwatch group is a special interest group forming part of the AMOS
society. A fair few of the ASWA members have been and will be attending the
meeting. Please come along. Please note, this is a separate meeting from
the normal ASWA meeting and is not associated with ASWA but as AMOS
supports ASWA in many ways, we can show our support for AMOS.

With that large 1043 millibar high developing in the southern ocean with
a nearby upper trough I thought I'd be safe in predicting a wet
southeasterly weekend in Sydney and further north..seems I'm going to
be wrong..oh well, hope springs eternal...this dry weather's a
turn-off...

A couple of nice breaks mentioned there Lindsay. I have surfed Cronulla
Point into double figures as well and it is such a workable wave at that
size.

I have also surfed Dee Why point, but it is not in the same class as
Cronulla Point. Hopefully with warm water offshore the first significant
cold air pools will stir up some east lows.

A dead giveaway for a possible east coast low is to watch the 540 line on
the US models, if a section of this gets isolated over the Tasman ( cut off
the main body ), you can generally bet a depression will develop under it.

I relate to what you say about the back, ears and ribs, most of my braver
conquests were at the age of 22, rather than the 42 I am now.

I must admit that the US NGP and AVN models are however playing a better
scenario for the central coast of NSW with some moderate rain on Wednesday /
Thursday. ( Fingers and toes crossed )

But as Blair indicates, Melbourne looks like pleasant cool-mild gardening
weather.
