You can find it here: http://www.bom.gov.au/info/cyclone/vance.shtml . There is a link to radar images there, but it doesn't work. I found the radar images however at http://www.bom.gov.au/info/cyclone/vance2.shtml . Truly awesome is all I can say! Happy Easter people! I've just written this up for the Aust Weather News, and I didn't see any comment on it on aussie-wx. It's datelined 27 March: >An area of storms which developed late last night brought heavy rain to the Pilbara region of Western Australia this morning. >Nullagine Post Office, 200km southeast of Port Hedland, reported 192mm in the 24 hours to 9am, most of which would have fallen >after midnight. If confirmed, this would be Nullagine's heaviest daily rainfall since records began in 1897, the previous highest fall >being 153.2mm. Other heavy falls were Carlindi Station, 70km ESE of Port Hedland with 112mm and Yarrie Station, 170km ESE of >Port Hedland, with 86mm. The surrounding falls, and the mass of rapidly developing high-topped cloud in the region on the IR satpix at the time give some credence to this figure. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com G'day Michael, Fascinating stories. Why do we do it, or should I say, why did we we do it? I tore a rib cartlidge doing a similar thing to you, getting back slammed and the like in a sucky sand break. Busted ribs, concussion, busted ears and popped discs etc were part of surfing hollow breaks. I used to watch the lows develop and then head for the van at Ulludulla. that's where my real interest in weather started in my late teens and early twenties. One time down south, no exaggeration, a very strong southerly buster came through, maybe 35-45 knots, (really strong and blinding). As I left the break (blown out) I was literally lifted a couple of feet into the air by a strong gust and dropped down again. I was holding onto my bodyboard really tightly at the time and it obviously acted like a sail. It was so much fun I tried to get it to happen again but succeeded in only losing my body board to another strong gust - had to walk down the beach a hundred yards or so to retrieve it. Lindsay. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Macdonald, I'm sure you have some nice weather to produce decent swells down there mate :-) Years ago (about 8 or more) we had a great e/ne swell in Cronulla courtesy of a QLD cyclone. It wasn't the biggest I've surfed but it was around 8-10 feet (a few 12 ft rogues) and very powerful. Heavy waves, very thick and dangerous - broken boards. Surfed Voodoo, a reef off Cronulla, and the scariest part was trying to get back in! I ended up cutting myself pretty bad and had to stitch myself there and then. I was SH.T SCARED and took most waves near the shoulder coz it was sucking nearly dry. A few guys pulled in and got concrete barrels! Thank God for those lovely cylone swells. I got some of the barrels of my life out of them - and headaches! Still haven't recovered full hearing in my right ear from a blowout in those days. But as any surfer would tell you - it was worth it. No hail but nice cool weather and rain periods persisting. 21mm of rain mostly overnight. The cloud mass is persisting and developing to the SW of the cloud band so it seems that more rain is on the way and may also affect the Illawarra Michael Thompson later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Jimmy Deguara Vice President ASWA from Schofields, Sydney e-mail: jimmyd at ozemail.com.au homepage with Michael Bath http://www.australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 015 From: Dane Newman [dpn at bigpond.com] To: "'aussie-weather at world.std.com'" [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: Kilsyth Weather Summary March 1999 Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 13:47:22 +1000 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Summary of Kilsyth weather March 1999 Average Max 24.0c (Highest max 31.8c-- 1st) (Lowest Max 15.4c --28th) ''''''''''''''' Min 12.4c ('''''''''''''' min 20.7c---25th)('''''''''''' Min 6.6c ---17th Rain 139.2mm (Average 60.5mm) Rain days 14 Barometer Average 1017.3 Hpa (Highest 1028.8--28th) (Lowest 1002.7--21st) Days of Thunder 4 (average 2.1) ''''''''''''''' Hail 1 ''''''''''''''''Fog 0 DANE +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 016 From: "Michael Thompson" [michaelt at ozemail.com.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: Re: aus-wx: weather conditions Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 15:00:09 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.1 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Mostly dry overnight here, very frustrating as I could see the rain over the northern suburbs of Wollongong. Still dry today, but the wind has strengthened a little and there is more broken Cu in the sky, rather then the uniform cloud of yesterday. I see this a positive sign. I think that we will get some showers tonight. Michael -----Original Message----- >Hi everyone, > >Jimmy here in Schofields NW Sydney. A upper level trough is forming near WA at the moment and will be here (Melb) by Sunday night. The Li's for the west of both NSW and VIc are in the negatives and the tot-tots are b/n 50 and 55 along most of the trough line. There is a good jet stream over NSW and Sth Qld. Good vorticity is evident at 500 and 700mb in patches around SE Aust as well. We'll get some good rain at the very least and hopefully a storm or five on Monday.
