The chasers in Eastern Australia should stay on alert just in case there is
some action. There is ample moisture and the system is quite dynamic.
Ithink we will see some majot thunderstorms develop with the trough line or
trough coming through. It seems to be attached to a low system. Watch the
storms develop on the back end of the cloud band. And I like the alignment
of the system. I think a chase is in order. So be ready ASWA!!!

Hi all,

I recorded 56mm in Higgins (West Canberra) in the 24 hours to
8am this morning (5 April). Other falls in Canberra further away
from the ranges were around 40-45mm. Currently overcast with a light
drizzle. Temp is 15 (DP 14).

I had a nice day at Bateman's Bay yesterday. After leaving the
tablelands with rain and temps of 15 -16, the coast was a
balmy 23 and sunny. I watched a number of cells drift south out
at sea. At around 6pm, these cells arrived at Bateman's Bay
(about the time I was ready to leave). Saw 1 CG but otherwise
there was very heavy rain which cleared once I reached the
top of Clyde Mountain. So twice in the one day, the weather
was totally different between the bottom and the top of the
escarpment.

I encountered rain again just before Canberra.

Now looking out for Jimmy's predicted storms...

Once the rain band clears, things may get interesting but we are staying put.

Hi everyone,

Jimmy here. I had received this e-mail who queried me about rotaion in S
and N hemisphere despite me telling him otherwise in an earlier message.
Interesting to read this and what the US think of us in terms of tornado
production. What do you think Michael Thompson.. Now now calm down there.

5/4/99 Blackheath 29mm to 8am, another few mls in the gauge since then.

Nothing partucularly heavy, just persistent.

12 degrees, at 8:40 am.

Interesting insights there Michael, on Cyclone swells.
I like your thoughts. I wouldn't surf Voodoo now for a thousand bucks.
It's funny how you lose confidence after a few years away from it all.
Living in the mountains tends to do that. I've pondered trying Govetts
Leap but its a long paddle back up to the top :-)

Bayswater has had 23mm since 9pm last night, and it's still going, but the
clearing edge is not far to the west. Cloud tops are embedded in this band,
but there is definitely some lift even now. I think NSW has a better chance
for some action than Victoria today.

Very interesting, a classic " my .... is bigger than your ... "

It would be hard to even justify 98% of "recorded" as apposed to actual.

His maths also means that the rest of the world = 0%, Bangladesh is one
country that I know gets severe tornadoes. I truly think that the next
decade or so will change the map in regard to tornadoes, whilst the US will
still get the biggest slice I think countries like China, Argentina, South
Africa ( away from the coast ) will emerge as being areas that are more
commonly affected than we ever had thought. Take China for example, on the
scale of natural disasters a tornado would not rate a mention, even locally,
compared the floods and earth quakes. I believe that supercells are probably
quite common there in southern parts.

Interesting side note to the Mudgee tornado at Yarrabin, my father was born
and bred in Hill End and when I told him he recalled a storm that went
through near the small town of Hargraves ( not far from this last one ), he
said that it left a narrow path where all trees were snapped or uprooted. He
remembers walking out to see the damage with other locals.

We are now talking of 1 confirmed and 1 possible tornado within a smal
radius, thats perhaps 2 tornadoes in an area in 60 years, and that is just
one example, I bet there are many areas of the slopes that have this
frequency.

Michael

Jimmy's thunderstorm prediction may yet prove correct, this cloud is
motoring, we had heavy rain band around 8.30-9.00am, but it has already
cleared seaward at 10am. It has just stopped raining and although I cannot
see clear sky it is rather light to the west now.

Michael,

Jimmy here. You and I must think similarly on this issue as bar China, I
had mentioned in my reply to him about the tornadoes in other part so of
the world. I also was interested in his the nothern hemisphere has
clockwise hurricanes....

Hi all!

As far as the percentages go, I recall info from a documentary, giving the breakup as - the US with 70% of all tornadoes, with the Bangladesh (forgotten the actual country) area with the next 10%, followed by Australia at 8%, & the remainder split with England and a couple of other small countries..... ???

A killer tornado struck Bosier City and Benton, a suburbs of Shreveport, Louisiana, late yesterday afternoon. The
tornado hit a trailer park, killing at least 6 people.

Moisture, wind shear and instablity are increasing across Texas. Looks like it will be a stormy night!

It's a case where statistics are based on " witnessed " cases as opposed to
what is really out there. I am not trying to take anything away from the
USA, it does have the highest number.

Actually, I recall vaguely that England has the most tornadoes per sq.

Apart from the logic in his statement 98% of tornadoes occur in the US
of A and 2 % occur in oz - this means that tornadoes do not occur
anywhere else? Not.

The other interesting item in the email was rotation direction.

I am reading a book at the moment called Under the Whirlwind by Jerrine
& Arjen Verkaik (described at veteran tornado chasers) On page 103 it
says

About 1% of all tornadoes spin anti cyclonically (counterclockwise
looking up) Anticyclonic tornadoes are usually weaker, short lived, and
unlikely to have wall clouds.

BTW This book is not a bad read, and looks at the experiences of a
number of people who suffered from the 20 April 1996 tornadoes in
Canada. A lot of detail and interviews and some general severe weather
stuff as well.

Please note this in your diaries and let me know of any agenda items you
wish to be discussed.

I will be away from the Internet from now until Sunday 12th due to moving
house, if anything is urgent you can contact me on 0412 145 710

It kind of fits my theory of population density, it seems tornado siteings
are driving the statistics.

Imagine if you had a population density in eastern Australia the same as
England, not only would we have lots more seen, we would have lots more
damage. Imagine the Bulahdelah F5 in an area as densely populated as the UK.

Hi everyone,
Certainly, by the articles that I have been reading in the
Royal Meteorological Society's journal 'Weather' recently, Britain has
far more tornados and funnel cloud sightings than I ever realised.
