Hi all,

I just thought I'd mention that I've found out that there is an archive
of the AVN analysis data held at the READY site:

For those interested, goto "archive meteorology" and then choose the
"FNL" model - the FNL models is exactly the same as the AVN one, except
it's only run in analysis mode. They keep the data for the past 6
months online. Make sure you choose a data set with "SH" in it . Thanks to Glenn on the READY mailing
list for informing me of this...this is excellent, it now means that
I'll be able to go through some of the plots for significant
thunderstorms in QLD/anywhere in Australia since November (just missed
out on October! But oh well)

Just thought I'd let any interested parties know...

Anthony Cornelius

Accommodation - anywhere outside Sydney, seriously Sydney is so overpriced.
Expect to pay $40-$60 for motels outside Sydney, there are also cabins in
Caravan Parks, these cost $30-$40 a night and can sleep up to 6 people, they
also include cooking facilities. There are some cheaper hotels in Sydney's
centre, but with a car it is a hassle, they are designed for the
backpackers.

Car hire is awefully expensive, you may be better off buying a car and
reselling it. I think Jimmy has a hail mobile for sale.

Mind when I say expensive you have to realise that the $A is as weak,so one
pound is going to get you over $2. Therefore what we think is expensive will
be a bargain to you.

Your travelling times are better than January, November is always an
interesting month, you can get some really good trough systems, the coast of
NSW can also get some freak 100F days in late November as NW winds are
sucked down from the continents interior. You have to get to SE Queensland
then and try to find the interface of the NW and tropical NE and you will
get fireworks.

Too many more and I will have to bunk in separate towns, some of the towns
we stayed at last year only had 1-2 motels. That is not a drama, it is
outside school holidays so should be OK.

I would suggest that if you are in Sydney, now might be the time to
buy a discounted hail damaged car for storm chasing...

Hi all

Im Tim Grugeon (new subscriber) and I live on a property on the flood
plains of the Hunter River, 6klms east of Morpeth (near Maitland NSW).
You may have already seen some of my messages floating around. I am 19
and a member of AMOS. I started on a year 12 equivalent course in 1998
at TAFE and I will be finished this year. Next year I am hoping to go to
university and do a science degree.

My interest into weather started back in my childhood by simply taking
an interest in how the river flooded, what caused the strong winter
westerlys and the summer storms. Due to the lack of trees and
buildings, when a thunderstorm approaches, we have a spectacular view of
it from any direction. Because it is so open out here, when the winds
blow, you certainly can notice it.

Today I am weather mad, proberly just like the rest of you. I like
anything to do with weather. I have been running my own weather station
since 1994. I now have rainfall records for everyday since the 1st of
January 1994 and maximum and minimum temps from the 15th of December
1994. There has not been one day I have missed since then. In 1996 I
upgraded the weather station to an AWS running on a data-logging system.
Wind speed and direction were added as an extra.

I also try and keep an eye on the weather everyday, but as I find other
commitments drag this back. I am storm mad, and I do storm chasing.

If you ever want to contact me in person, please fill free. Just send an
email to: timg at iniaccess.net.au

Hi All,

A reminder to all on this list to please:

* set your email client to 'plain text only' - archiving mail that is not
plain text results in html tags throughout and makes them very hard to read

* make sure you change the subject line if you replying to a message, but
not maintaining the discussion thread. With all the email on the Sydney
storm the past few days, the subject has been wrong on dozens of emails

* also, make sure your computers date/time is correct

thanks
Michael

Greetings fellow lovers of all things meteorological,

After a period in cyber-wilderness I can joyfully say that my Mac
problems are now behind me, and I can once more be party to the
endlessly interesting info. supplied by all and sundry on this mailing
list. I'm still about 1500 e-mails behind pace but hope to rectify that
ASAP- so if there are any messages that might have required a response
from yours truly, please be patient.
With the recent Sydney dramas etc. it looks like I got back online at
about the right time. OK, that's enough waffle- now to justify my
existence, weather-wise.... Regarding lapse-rates, there are 2 , the
simpler relating to an atmosphere which is unsaturated ie. cloudless,
called the dry adiabatic lapse rate, and for cloudy (saturated)
environments, you guessed it, the saturated adiabatic lapse rate. The
DALR is about 10 degrees Celsius per km ascent while the SALR varies. In
the warm, low troposhere it can be as low as 5 C/km, while high in the
troposphere where temps are much lower it becomes close to the DALR.
The complications with respect to the SALR are due mainly to the
processes of condensation and evaporation which release/absorb heat
into the immediate environment. While these lapse rates represent
idealised conditions (the 'adiabatic' term implies no external heat
supplied eg. solar radiation) they are still essentially valid and
accurate in most instances. Because the troposphere contains a mixture
of saturated and unsaturated air a general lapse rate of about 6 C/km is
accepted.
Hence, an air mass/parcel will continue to rise into the atmosphere if
its lapse rate is greater than the appropriate ALR. It may interest
some to know that the difference in LRs which facilitates convection are
quite small. A convecting air parcel will generally be less than 1 C
warmer than the surrounding air, and even in the most vigorous Cb
convection will most often be less than 5 C warmer than the immediate
environment.
Hope I haven't bored you anyone with all this.

PS. My apologies to fellow Victorian ASWA members for my non-attendance
at the last meeting. I'm sure I will remember the next one!

Hi Tim,
Welcome to the list. I have only been on it myself for a couple
of months or so. The weather down here has been boring - fine and
mostly clear day after day since Easter. Oh well, if you can't have
the unsettled stuff, you may as well enjoy it while it's like this.

It was very hotly debated nback last year, I even sent E Mails to the
minister, to no avail, never got a reply.
