I noted it approximately over the Inala area towards the rear of the cloud base. Initially I thought "Holy Snapping Mackeral, that looks like a wall cloud", however, try as I might, I could not observe rotation or any great degree of turbulence, although it was clearly an inflow area rather than a downdraft. I observed precipitation begin shortly thereafter, to the East of the lowering, which gradually increased until about 4:00pm, which is when I noted that you should be getting a shower. John. >Snip After this I'm sure many of you are going to question my sanity/reliability of reports - so before I go on, I'm saying now that I do not believe to "exagerate or dramatise" my reports. As many of you are aware, there was some Congestus/TCU in Brisbane today, some of it was extremely dark, and one turned into a small Cb, that gave some very local thunder, and James reported that he saw a possible hail shaft near him. This small Cb looked quite nice from where I was, and it was going to pass over me...I noticed a lowering on the ~WNW of the t'storm, and I initially didn't think anything of it, except has a platonic lowering that can often occur. I was talking to a friend while I was watching it (I even had convinced him to come outside and look at some of the "cool structures"!) As I was watching the lowering, I thought there was rotation...of course, I thought I was imagining it initially - however I stared at it for a while, and the lowered base was actually rotating in my eyes. My friend asked me what I was looking at, and I questioned him whether or not he saw rotation, initially he didn't...but soon he responded with "hey, yeah it is too, what does that mean?" I replied with "umm, I'm not quite sure because it's not meant to be rotating!" Of course, there was a lot of shear around, ample infact to allow a thunderstorm to rotate. But this is the first complication, during this, I heard at the most 5-6 faint rumbles of thunder, no claps, nor cracks - just very faint. On radio, I had very occassional and minimal static interference - however this could have been anything, and not neccessarily lightning induced static. It was a very nice little lowered base on the edge of the t'storm...and it was rotating, slowly - it was nicely curved just above me. Winds were generally 10kn NE, but as it passed almost directly overhead...for a short period (~30secs) my ears popped! It scared the .... out of me, because I certainly was not expecting it. As it passed, immediately after there were some *EXTREMELY LARGE* drops of rain - they actually looked like hail, and sounded like hail on the tin roof! Certainly, it was melted hail... +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 002 From: Paul_Mossman at agd.nsw.gov.au X-Lotus-Fromdomain: NSW_AG To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 08:01:40 +1000 Subject: aus-wx: Hail Storm Update. BUT after ringing aorung a few friends in the suburbs of Old bar, Mitchells Island, manning Point and Harrington hail the size of Golf balls were reported in large quantities. Apparently Coopernook (near Harrington) was worst hit with moderate damage by strong - very strong squally winds and hail. A friend of mine from Old Bar has kept a hailstone the size of a golf ball (or so he tells me) in his freezer for my inspection when I get back. So strange that there was no more damage reported. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 003 X-Sender: paisley at mail.cobweb.com.au Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 08:19:44 +0930 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Phil Bagust [paisley at cobweb.com.au] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Want Food for Thought? I don't think you're crazy at all Anthony. This sounds very much like the cloud I chased in Adelaide in Feburary. It had a black base, a rotating lowering, great rainfoot, and cool inflow features (Michael Bath has the piccies) but never gave more than a few crackles on the radio! I think the moral here is that we should look hard at TCU's because they can get severe-like structure without ever going severe. Did you take any pictures?? According to Optus electrical engineers at Rosebury, the recent Sydney storm dropped 6-8cm average over the exchange but there were some 'single' stones that were found on the ground afterwards (as opposed from the ones they collected from inside their office) that were reportedly 1/2 as big again (10-12cm) hence the damage bill of around $1 billion. So to be confirmed I gather that they must be seen by BoM employees and not spotters or anyone alse. In that case I dont think I have seen a confirmed report of hail larger than 9 cm in Australia. I was at South Kempsey when the storm hit and the stones were up to 8cm diamater - the hail photo on the main index page of Australian Severe Weather shows it - you can also see the storm structure and other hail pics, if you visit the 'weather photo catalog' and choose images 051-095 of 1991: http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/photography/photos/1991/index0 2.htm The large hail fell before any other precipitation occurred and made an unforgettable whipping sound as they smashed through the surrounding gumtrees. Torrential rain for 10 minutes followed with smaller hail. A second storm with hail to about 2cm swept through the same location about 45 minutes later. regards, Michael mbath at ozemail.com.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 008 From: "Jane ONeill" [cadence at rubix.net.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Shiver.... Terry. mailto:dymprog at mpx.com.au ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________ NZ SEES LA NINA CONTINUING THROUGH WINTER, SPRING ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WELLINGTON - The La Nina weather pattern is expected to continue through the New Zealand winter and spring and alter rain patterns in farming areas, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) said yesterday. The La Nina pattern that began last winter weakened in the past two months but had now stabilised and was likely to strengthen again from mid-winter 1999, NIWA senior climate scientist Dr Jim Salinger said in a statement. "Above average rainfall is expected in the north and east of the North Island and below average rainfall is expected to continue in the south of the South Island." Drought affected areas of Central Otago could continue to expect dry conditions, with below average temperatures in inland and southern South Island areas. "The scientific evidence now coming in shows that a large area in the equatorial central Pacific Ocean remains cooler than average," Salinger said. "Seasonal climate models are now in agreement that La Nina conditions are likely to strengthen again in winter. "If so eastern areas of the South Island are expected to receive lower than average spring rainfalls. Drought conditions over the past two New Zealand summers have curtailed agricultural production - most notably in the dairy, meat and wool sectors. Salinger said the regions most at risk of dry conditions over next summer were Otago and South Canterbury." However he added that climate models were unclear and the weather pattern may revert to a neutral one. On the morning of Saturday the 21st of August, 1971, a severe hailstorm accompanied by a tornado tore through the eastern suburbs of Sydney - the scene of the recent hailstorm - bringing hail up to 5cm in diameter and very heavy rainfall. What was quite extra-ordinary at the time was, not only was this storm in winter but it also co-incided with a partial solar eclipse. The Bureau of Meteorology reported that this may have accentuated the darkness with the storm. Indeed the headlines in the Sun Herald were: "Freak storm turned day into night 'LIKE END OF THE WORLD'". One radio announcer was reported in the Sun Herald as having said: "It looks like the end of the world." Further reports were of hail "Piled up to three feet [in the city]" and "[the wind] unroofed scores of homes." The Sun Herald also reports that the storm first hit Richmond - NW of Sydney - and "spread in a three pronged formation until it covered the entire metropolitan area." Further descriptions were of "cars stalled along this [Day] street. These vehicles were temporarily 'glued' to the ground by piles of ice" and that "many streets looked as though a severe snowstorm had swept them." Severe flooding was experienced: "gutters overflowed and floodwaters thick with floating ice flowed into several shops." Intense lightning was noted: "Mr Hunter Parsonson of Killara, said: 'We were blacked out for a couple of minutes after a violent blast of lightning and thunder.'" and "In the north-western suburbs, the storm brought with bolts of lightning which ripped across the sky, hitting and bringing down powerlines..." This certainly must have been a memorable storm. - Paul G. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 017 From: Dane Newman [dpn at bigpond.com] To: "'aussie-weather at world.std.com'" [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: First Frost Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 16:23:01 +1000 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by penman.es.mq.edu.au id QAA28676 Had our first frost of the year here this morning with the temp dropping to a surprisngly low 0.5c here in Kilsyth, Coldstream AWS(10km to the north) got down to -1c most other Melbourne suburbs had minima between 2 and 6c. There was a major site change in 1992, from the prison (which is on a hill and probably isn't a wonderfully exposed site anyway) to the airport. This has led to a MAJOR downward discontinuity in mean minimum temperatures, at a guess 2 degrees (I haven't analysed it in detail). The record April low at the prison was 1.4 (1978). In seven years of record the airport had recorded 0.0 three times, in 1992, 1994 and 1995. In the best parochial tradition, I gather that the local council has complained about their temperatures being too low! I would suggest thast everyone with home pages mention something about the following: we need to ask anyone who was in the area (or knows someone that does) that we would appreciate any photographs or video or information of hailstones, lightning, the storm and so on as well as other storms in their area. If other storms, perhaps you ask if they can remember the date it was taken or perhaps even the month or apporximate time of year. I believe that photographs and video footage are out there but we must try and get hold of it. These are very important notes to put either on every report written or perhaps a general one where all the links to these reports are. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Paul, The BoM, prepared a detailed report on this storm, published by AGPS. It was written by the then RD, Vic Bahr, Rosea Kemp (still at Bureau) and D. Kurzeme. The main features of this storm were its time, (both of the day and the time of year), its duration, its amounts of rain and amount of hail - mostly small. The major cell formed near Richmondat 6.30 am (on a Winter morning !)It reached Dural at 7.45 and the city around 9am. It was located 50 kms ESE of the city at 11.45, shortly after it reached max intensity. Hail fell in the city and across to the ESE. Depth of hail varied - size was mainly pea size, with larger jagged bits to 4-5 cms. Hail drift to 120 cms were reported and photogrpahed. Between 8 am and 11 am, sydney had 53 mm of rain. Another heavy storms in the early evening brought an additional 81 mm between 5 & 9 pm - it was a remarkable day. In a band from Ashfield to Bondi, hail ended up to 3 feet - 90 cms deep. Lightning was mentioned as another fetaure of the storm. Therewas no wind damage and no report at all of a tornado in anything written about the storm. Max wind gust reported was 29 knots. Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 04:58:08 PDT Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Don & everyone, I have only had a brief look at the Bureau's report on this storm. I do seem to remember that in the report, it was proposed that the storm may fit the supercell model, in part due to its appearence on PPI radar (I think a hook shaped echo). The Bureau of Meteorology's severe storm database mentions that there was a tornado but doesn't give any details. The Sun Herald does mention high winds: "The storm was accompanied by high winds which tore off the roofs of hundreds of shops and homes..." but doesn't mention anything about a tornado. However, in the opening paragraphs, the Sun Herald mentions the following: "The dark atmospheric conditions were caused by menacing black cloud formations, which swirled low over the city at 300 feet before the storm broke." So perhaps whoever was researching the Bureau's severe storm database found this paragraph and interpreted it as a possible tornado given the wind damage...Unless there are eyewitness accounts of a funnel associated with the shops and houses which were unroofed. Nonetheless, it certainly must have been an interesting storm. - Paul G. >From: Don White >Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com >To: aussie-weather at world.std.com >Subject: Re: aus-wx: August, 1971 Sydney Hailstorm... >Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 20:24:21 +1000 > >Paul, >The BoM, prepared a detailed report on this storm, published by AGPS.
